Versa Capital buys Eastern Mountain Sports

Versa Capital Management LLC, a Philadelphia-based private equity firm, said it has bought Eastern Mountain Sports, or EMS, a New Hampshire-based chain of 69 stores that sells outdoor gear and apparel. Versa Capital’s portfolio includes Bob’s Stores, a regional apparel chain. After the holidays, plans call for exploring opportunities for Bob’s Stores and EMS to collaborate, Versa Capital said.

Massachusetts gas prices fall 2 cents a gallon in latest weekly survey from AAA

The average price for gas in Massachusetts was $3.569 a gallon in the latest weekly AAA survey, down 2 cents from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said Monday. The Massachusetts average has fallen 10 cents over the past month, AAA Southern New England added. The current national average price is $3.42 a gallon. A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $3.31, AAA Southern New England said.

H3 Biomedicine expands its Cambridge HQ

H3 Biomedicine Inc., a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the discovery and development of oncology treatments, said that it has completed an expansion that more than doubles the size of its headquarters and laboratory facilities in Cambridge. The company, which had 29 employees in 2011, said that it expects to end 2013 with 75 employees. The company’s headquarters and lab space now occupy about 48,000 square feet of space.

Immunetics appoints John Yonkin as CEO

Immunetics Inc., a Boston company focused on technologies for diagnosing and screening for infectious diseases, said Monday that its board of directors has appointed John Yonkin as chief executive. Yonkin succeeds Dr. Andrew Levin, the company’s founder. Levin will remain president at Immunetics and will continue to lead its research and development group.

Private equity firm Castanea Partners to sell Urban Decay cosmetics brand to L’Oréal

Castanea Partners, a private equity firm based in Newton, said it has agreed to sell the Urban Decay cosmetics brand to L’Oréal, a global beauty company. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year. According to a Castanea Partners press release, the Urban Decay brand emphasizes “femininity and irreverence.”

ImmunoGen appoints Charles Morris as chief development officer

ImmunoGen Inc., a Waltham biotechnology company, announced Monday the appointment of Charles Morris as executive vice president and chief development officer. In that capacity, Morris is responsible for leading all aspects of product development. He reports to Daniel Junius, ImmunoGen’s president and chief executive.

Mobile shopping hits Thanksgiving Day high

More shoppers than ever before got a virtual jump on Black Friday this year, snapping up online deals with smartphones and tablets on Thursday without even losing sight of -- or a seat at -- the Thanksgiving Day table. Internet retailers recorded 17.4 percent more sales Thursday compared with the previous year’s Thanksgiving Day in large part due to a spike in buying on mobile devices, according to IBM Smarter Commerce, which tracks holiday shopping activity.

Blue laws mean later start for Mass. shoppers, but Black Friday frenzy underway

Across most of the nation, retailers opened on Thanksgiving Day , but those changes have not occurred in Massachusetts, one of three New England states that still forbids the practice based on 17th century blue laws. But at Best Buy in Danvers a mammoth line snaked across the Liberty Tree Mall well before midnight when many stores would open. Shoppers in Massachusetts are expected to spend $14 billon during this year’s holiday sales, a 3.5 percent increase from last year.

Dedham retailer iParty stock could face delisting due to low price

The Dedham retailer iParty Corp. said its stock, which has traded at 25 cents or less for a year, could be delisted if it doesn’t take action to raise the share price by May 20, 2013.

Mass. residents take advantage of early Black Friday deals in New Hampshire

Store openings on Black Friday, the traditional kick-off of the holiday shopping season, have crept earlier and earlier for the past several years. This year, a number of major retailers pushed up their start times even further, opening their doors to shoppers who were still digesting their pumpkin pie.

Steward Health Care System to cut jobs at three of its community hospitals

Managers at three community hospitals owned by Steward Health Care System have notified representatives of Local 1199 of the Service Employees International Union that they plan to eliminate as many as 35 service and technical jobs, union leaders said Wednesday. Over the past week, they said, Steward officials alerted them of its intention to cut 15 union jobs at Norwood Hospital, 12 at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, and seven or eight at Morton Hospital in Taunton.
