Staples survey: More workers refuse to take days off when they get the flu

You might think that with the economy improving and with so much technology available for telecommuting, that more workers would stay home more when they get sick, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, according to a new survey from Staples Inc., the Framingham-based office supply giant. Nearly 80 percent of the survey’s respondents said they come to work even when sick, an increase of 20 percent from a year ago.

Dunkin’ Donuts plans to salute Gronk with a life-size cake baked in his image

Rob Gronkowski is best known as a football star for the New England Patriots, but he is also a pitchman for Dunkin’ Donuts. A recent Dunkin’ Facebook promotion asked fans to submit videos imitating the Gronk’s signature touchdown spike move. Winners have been invited to meet Gronkowski at Gillette Stadium Tuesday. As part of the event, Dunkin’ commissioned Montilio’s Baking Co. to a bake a life-sized cake in Gronkowski’s image.

Foundation Medicine, AstraZeneca announce genomic profiling collaboration

Foundation Medicine Inc. announced Monday a multi-year collaboration with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca to identify alterations found in cancer-related tumor genes that may predict a person’s response or resistance to targeted medicines. Cambridge-based Foundation Medicine is a molecular information company dedicated to a transformation in cancer care in which treatment is informed by a deep understanding of the genomic changes that contribute to each patient’s unique cancer. AstraZeneca, an Anglo-Swedish company, has a big presence in Greater Boston.

Big holiday sellers this year? Trampolines and chicken coops, Wayfair.com predicts

Trampolines could be big sellers this holiday season, and chicken coops and air hockey tables should also do well. So predicts Wayfair.com, a Boston-based online retailer of home products and furnishings. The company said it sifted through its sales data and analyzed trends to come up with its holiday forecast. Trampolines have been popular for several years, but the success of the US women’s gym team at the Summer Olympics has cranked up demand, Wayfair.com said. And what locavore wouldn’t want a chicken coop for Christmas?

Raytheon works with SVA to help empower student veterans

Raytheon Co., the Waltham-based defense contractor, said it has made a $50,000 donation to help Student Veterans of America work with student veterans. Raytheon said its partnership with Student Veterans of America, or SVA, will provide support, mentoring, career guidance, and opportunities to service members pursuing higher education degrees.

Federal court panel upholds judgment against Starbucks in 2008 tips case, chain owes baristas more than $14 million

A US Court of Appeals panel in Boston upheld a lower court ruling that found Starbucks owes Massachusetts baristas more than $14 million for violating state laws preventing supervisors from sharing in tips pools. Starbucks baristas challenged the Seattle coffee chain’s practice of requiring them to share tips left by customers with shift supervisors, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in 2008. Last year, a federal judge ruled against Starbucks and the company appealed that decision.

Red Sox owner John Henry is shutting down his Florida investment firm after several years of decline, but Henry insists he has no intention of selling his stake in the Boston baseball franchise.

Citing ‘human error,’ Warren Group says more foreclosures were started in September, not fewer as it first reported

The Warren Group, a Boston company that tracks local real estate, said Friday that because of ”human error,” it mistakenly reported that fewer foreclosures were begun in September when the number statewide actually rose significantly. In issuing a correction, Timothy M. Warren, chief executive of the Warren Group, said it’s the only data error the 140-year-old business has made in at least two decades.

Comcast marks 1st anniversary of upgrading data services in Boston’s Innovation District

Comcast is marking the one-year anniversary of its completion of wiring up the district with its highest level of data services for business customers. According to Comcast, Internet speeds in the neighborhood are 14 times faster than they were before the upgrade. Such services are not only ideal for high-tech start-ups, but old school businesses as well, Comcast contends.

Mass. AG Martha Coakley fines Burger King franchisee for child labor violations

MHC Services LLC, a West Springfield-based company that operates seven franchised Burger King restaurants in Western Massachusetts, has been fined $50,000 for multiple violations of Massachusetts Child Labor Laws, the office of state Attorney General Martha Coakley said Friday. According to Coakley’s office, minors allegedly worked more hours and later than the state’s labor laws allow. MHC “fully cooperated” with the attorney general’s investigation, Coakley’s office said.

Boston Consulting Group finding: Young men like to shop

A new study from the Boston Consulting Group concludes that Millennials --- consumers between the ages of 16 to 34 --- spend more time dining out and shopping for clothers than middle-age consumers. To woo this young demographic, restaurants and retailers need to come up with some new strategies, particularly ones that make use of social media, the Boston Consulting Group said.
