Stop & Shop opens new store in PembrokeThe Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC celebrated the Friday grand opening of a new store in Pembroke, one that uses a smaller format than many of the chain’s superstores. Pembroke, in fact, is where Stop & Shop debuted its superstore format in the early 1980s. Superstores generally range in size from 55,000 to 65,000 square feet. The new Pembroke store, at 24 Mattakeesett St., occupies 45,000 square feet and is located several miles away from Stop & Shop’s existing superstore in Pembroke. | |||
NH brewery seeks answers in fatal keg explosionA New Hampshire brewery has hired an independent investigator to help determine what caused a keg explosion that killed an employee of the Redhook Ale Brewery in Portsmouth. Redhook’s parent company, Craft Brew Alliance, Inc., says officials haven’t determined what caused the plastic keg to explode while an employee was cleaning it with compressed air. The April 24 explosion killed 26-year-old Ben Harris of Newington. | |||
Sony Vaio computers now come with pre-installed Kaspersky Lab security featuresKaspersky Lab, a privately-held Internet security company with offices in Woburn, said that a free subscription of its flagship security products for at-home PC protection will now come pre-installed on all Sony Vaio systems sold in the Americas. According to a Sony website, Vaio is a Sony line of laptop and tablet computers. A 30-day subscription of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 will come pre-installed on all Sony Vaio PCs sold at retail and online within the United States, Canada, and Latin America. | |||
South Shore Hospital to join Partners HealthCare system, but agreement is short of a mergerSouth Shore Hospital, in Weymouth, has agreed to become a member of the Partners HealthCare medical system, according to a memoradum of understanding released Thursday by the hospital, Partners HealthCare, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Under the agreement, which requires state and federal review over the next several months, South Shore Hospital would become part of Partners, but it would keep its name and remain an independently licensed, not-for-profit health care provider. The hospital would maintain its own board of directors, medical staff, community connections and fund-raising activities. | |||
Orthofix pays $42m to end Medicare false-claims probeOrthofix International NV, a maker of bone-repair and sports medicine products, agreed to pay $42 million to resolve a lawsuit and a six-year criminal probe of allegations it paid kickbacks to doctors who used its bone- growth stimulators. New PerkinElmer innovation center in Hopkinton will create 100 jobsPerkinElmer Inc., a Waltham company that provides equipment for genetic screening and drug research, disclosed plans Thursday to establish a Personalized Health Innovation Center of Excellence at an existing facility in Hopkinton. The company, which reported $1.9 billion in 2011 revenue, projects that the center will create about 100 new jobs in Massachusetts over the next 18 months. Currently, PerkinElmer has a worldwide head count of more than 7,000 employees, including over 800 in Massachusetts. | |||
Scvngr raises $12m as it looks to take its LevelUp mobile payment app nationalScvngr, a Boston technology company that develops games and payment apps for smartphones, said Thursday that it has raised $12 million in funding from such investors as Highland Capital Partners, Google Ventures, and Balderton Capital. All three were existing investors in the company. New investors Continental Investors and Transmedia Capital also participated in the round. One of the company’s apps is called LevelUp, and it enables consumers to use their smartphones to pay for such things as restaurant meals. | |||
