Former Red Sox Curt Schilling’s video game company files for bankruptcy

38 Studios LLC, the troubled video game company founded by retired Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection Thursday, clearing the way to liquidate the company. The Delaware court filing suggests that Schilling has given up his search for additional capital from the state or outside investors to restart the company. Chapter 7 is the section of the bankruptcy code that companies use when they are liquidating their assets.

New PerkinElmer innovation center in Hopkinton will create 100 jobs

PerkinElmer Inc., a Waltham company that provides equipment for genetic screening and drug research, disclosed plans Thursday to establish a Personalized Health Innovation Center of Excellence at an existing facility in Hopkinton. The company, which reported $1.9 billion in 2011 revenue, projects that the center will create about 100 new jobs in Massachusetts over the next 18 months. Currently, PerkinElmer has a worldwide head count of more than 7,000 employees, including over 800 in Massachusetts.

Scvngr raises $12m as it looks to take its LevelUp mobile payment app national

Scvngr, a Boston technology company that develops games and payment apps for smartphones, said Thursday that it has raised $12 million in funding from such investors as Highland Capital Partners, Google Ventures, and Balderton Capital. All three were existing investors in the company. New investors Continental Investors and Transmedia Capital also participated in the round. One of the company’s apps is called LevelUp, and it enables consumers to use their smartphones to pay for such things as restaurant meals.

US Senator Charles Grassley raises Vertex stock profits issue with SEC chief

US Senator Charles Grassley, in a letter to the head of the federal Securities and Exchange Commission Thursday, said he is concerned about a recent dramatic jump in Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s stock price that followed overstated test data for a drug it’s developing.

L.L.Bean debuts Fenway Boat & Tote, a handbag tribute to the Red Sox and Fenway Park

L.L.Bean, the venerable haberdasher for rugged New Englanders, is unveiling the Fenway Boat & Tote, a limited-edition version of the company’s signature tote made from the rain delay tarp used to protect the Fenway Park infield from bad weather during the 2010 and 2011 Boston baseball seasons. Both L.L.Bean and Fenway Park are celebrating their 100th anniversaries this year, and that convergence of cultural milestones was the inspiration for “upcycling” the infield tarp and fashioning pieces of it into the Fenway Boat & Tote.

World Energy Solutions promotes Phil Adams to CEO

World Energy Solutions Inc., a Worcester-based energy management services firm, said Thursday that Phil Adams, company president since 2007 and chief operating officer since 2003, will now serve as president and chief executive, effective immediately. He replaces Richard Domaleski, who has tendered his resignation. In a statement, Domaleski described himself as an “entrepreneur at heart” who likes “nothing more than starting new businesses.”

Franklin Park Zoo unveils 100th anniversary logo as ad campaign pitches new dinosaur exhibit

Boston ad agency Forge Worldwide said it has designed a “ZOO100” logo to help Franklin Park Zoo mark its 100th anniversary. A 15-second TV ad is also set to begin airing, said Forge Worldwide, which is doing the work pro bono. Another part of the assignment: Create a marketing campaign for the new Zoorassic Park Exhibit. The exhibit features life-size animatronic dinosaurs.

Fed’s Rosengren says financial system risks can damage growth

Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Eric Rosengren said persistent risks in the global financial system may slow the economic expansion. “Concerns about the possibility of future problems cause a substantial reduction in current economic growth,” Rosengren said according to remarks prepared for a speech in Copenhagen. Rosengren’s speech to the Institute of International Finance’s membership meeting highlighted the aversion of risk in global financial markets that has prompted stronger demand for the safest assets such as US and German government debt.

New England economy improving, but risks loom, Fed reports

The New England real estate market showed hints of a recovery in the spring, albeit a fragile one, the Federal Reserve said in an economic report released Wednesday. Housing was among several sectors reporting steady improvement -- albeit with concerns about the future -- as the New England economy continued to expand, according to the Fed. The region’s software and information technology firms reported “relatively strong” growth, but other industries reported slow hiring and concern about the possibility of an economic collapse in Europe

Running of the Brides brand auction is at a standstill

An auction scheduled this week to sell off the intellectual property of Filene’s Basement and its parent company Syms Corp. has been called off indefinitely until the creditors can decide on a plan to close out the bankruptcy case. The sale of the assets, including the Filene’s Basement and Running of the Brides names, had already been delayed once. Several unnamed bidders submitted proposals by last week’s deadline. But unresolved issues over the direction of the reorganization prompted the cancellation of the auction.

Three patent attorneys join Hub law firm Wolf Greenfield

Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks P.C., a Boston law firm specializing in intellectual property, said its sharpening its litigation focus with the hiring of three attorneys. Gregory F. Corbett was previously a partner specializing in patent litigation at the Washington, D.C., office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Two other attorneys with backgrounds in patent litigation, D. Alexander Ewing and Nathan R. Speed, have also joined Wolf Greenfield. Ewing and Speed were previously at WilmerHale.
