Johnnie’s Foodmaster is closing all of its 10 stores, liquidator says

Hilco Merchant Resources, an Illinois-based company whose services include liquidation, said it is beginning closing sales at all 10 Johnnie’s Foodmaster supermarkets. Last month, Chelsea-based Johnnie’s Foodmaster, one of the last family-run urban grocers in Massachusetts, said it was closing six supermarkets in November and selling the leases to Whole Foods Market Inc. At that time, Johnnie’s management declined to comment on what would happen with the chain’s remaining four stores.

Shaw’s Supermarkets is cutting 700 jobs, or just under 4 percent of its employees

Shaw’s Supermarkets, a 169-store chain based in West Bridgewater, said it plans to cut 700 jobs, or just under 4 percent of its total employee headcount. Total headcount after the reduction will be about 17,000, a company spokesman said, and there are no plans to close any stores. About 90 employees have been informed that they’re being laid off, and the rest will be notified over the next several days, Shaw’s said.

Blink!, a light and sound show, will light up Faneuil Hall Marketplace this holiday season

Retailers at Faneuil Hall Marketplace are looking to amp up holiday excitement with Blink!, a six-week light-and-sound show that features the music of the Boston Pops, the Faneuil Hall Marketplace Merchants Association said Friday. With the help of 350,000 LED lights and an 85-foot high Christmas tree, the plan is to transform the area into “a must-visit destination” for holiday shoppers, the association said.

Amtrak website: ‘Modified service’ is up and running between Boston and NY Friday

Amtrak said on its website that it will provide Acela Express and Northeast Regional “modified service” on the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., via New York City, on Friday, Nov. 2. The posting continued: “Before traveling to Boston-South Station, New York-Penn Station, Philadelphia-30th Street Station, or other Amtrak locations, passengers should make reservations and/or use the eTicketing option with their computers and smartphones. Amtrak services to and from New York City are subject to delay while repairs continue.”

US unemployment rises to 7.9 percent; Employers add 171,000 jobs

The US unemployment rate rose slightly last month, but remained below 8 percent, as US employers added jobs for the 25th consecutive month, signs of a slow but steadily advancing recovery just days before voters head to the polls in a election that has hinged on their views of the economy. In its last report before the election, the Labor Department estimated the unemployment rate at 7.9 percent, up from 7.8 percent in October, and employers added 171,000 jobs.

Mass. paper company buys Maine stationery maker

DALTON — The Massachusetts company that makes the paper used to print US currency has bolstered its stationery division by buying a Maine-based division of Hallmark Cards. Crane & Co. announced Thursday it has agreed to purchase Kennebunk, Maine-based stationery company William Arthur and consolidate the companies at its North Adams facility late next year. Crane CEO Stephen DeFalco tells the Berkshire Eagle that the deal gives his company ‘‘flexibility in the marketplace.’’

Abiomed stock falls 31 percent after the Danvers company says it’s under federal investigation

Shares of Abiomed Inc. plunged by nearly a third on the Nasdaq stock exchange Thursday after the Danvers company said it is the subject of a federal investigation.In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the cardiac device maker disclosed it has received a subpoena from the US attorney’s office seeking documents related to the labeling of its Impella 2.5 heart pump.

Beth Israel Deaconess, Signature affiliation deal moves closer

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and its doctors group, which last summer entered into exclusive talks to affiliate with Signature Healthcare of Brockton, have now signed a memorandum of understanding with Signature, which owns the 263-bed Brockton Hospital.

Eric Rosengren says Fed’s latest stimulus efforts are helping US economy

The Federal Reserve’s efforts to stimulate the US economy by buying billions of dollars of long-term bonds appears to be working, helping to boost home sales, construction, and consumer spending and confidence, said Eric S. Rosengren, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Mike Mahoney takes over as chief executive of Boston Scientific, promises better days ahead

Just over a year after he was recruited from a major competitor, Michael F. Mahoney formally took the reins as Boston Scientific Corp.’s chief executive Thursday, promising to revitalize the long-struggling Natick medical device maker. Mahoney said he would focus on turning around Boston Scientific through innovation, overseas expansion, and making operations more efficient. The official promotion was delayed by a series of chessboard moves necessitated by a non-compete clause in his former contract with health care products giant Johnson and Johnson
