New England Congressmen urge leaders to preserve home heating assistance
Massachusetts Congressmen Ed Markey and Jim McGovern and Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont, pressed leaders in the House of Representatives Wednesday to protect federal home heating assistance for low-income residents from further cuts in the so-called “sequester.” In a letter to House leaders, the New England Congressmen said that if broad-based federal cuts go forward on March 1, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program that many people in the region rely on in winter could face an additional $177 million in cuts.
Comcast’s Upware aims to help small businesses buy cloud-based services
Comcast Corp. said Wednesday that it is unveiling a software marketplace called Upware that is designed to help make it easier for small and mid-size businesses to find cloud-based storage, data backup, security, and Web collaboration services. At Upware, business customers can buy services through one integrated Web portal from such vendors as Carbonite Inc., a Boston-based data back-up firm; Mozy, a data back-up business of EMC Corp. of Hopkinton; and Microsoft Corp.
Beth Israel Deaconess, New England Baptist hospitals to talk about running clinical programs together
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has agreed to talk to New England Baptist Hospital about a range of potential joint clinical and community programs -- though not a merger. The two Boston hospitals have signed a memorandum of understanding to spend three to four months exploring “a whole variety of collaborations” that haven’t yet been specified, said Judy Glasser, senior vice president of Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess.
Federal Bureau of Prisons signs new $60m contract with UMass Medical School
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has awarded a new five-year contract to UMass Medical School to continue coordinating health care services for inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens, UMass Medical School said Wednesday. The new contract is valued at $60 million over five years. UMass Medical School has assisted in managing medical care for 1,100 inmates at the facility since 2001.
SynapDx signs lease for lab space in Lexington, Richards Barry Joyce says
SynapDx Corp., a provider of laboratory diagnostics to doctors who suspect children of developmental disorders, has leased 10,724 square feet of laboratory space at 4 Hartwell Place in Lexington, said broker Richards Barry Joyce. The landlord is King Street Properties. In establishing a new corporate headquarters in Lexington, SynapDx will consolidate two locations in Woburn and Southborough.
MAR: Real estate agents feel confident about local housing market
A monthly confidence index for the local housing market has hit its highest mark since the index’s launch in 2008, the Massachusetts Association of Realtors said. The association calls its metric the Realtor Market Confidence Index, and it uses a 100-point scale. For January, the index’s monthly read was 65. For January 2012, the reading was 31.86. January 2013 was the 18th straight month of year-over-year increases.
MTV pranks Twitter, fakes hacking
MTV pranked the Twittersphere today when it made several irregular posts followed by #MTVHACK. The charade lasted nearly an hour, starting at about 3 p.m. with a nod to Burger King, which was hacked on Monday.
