Fidelity income falls 29 percent due to stock fund outflows, low interest rates, higher expenses
Fidelity Investments said its operating income dropped 29 percent last year, to $2.3 billion, as revenues slipped and expenses rose. The Boston-based mutual fund giant, in its annual report, said its revenues fell 1 percent to $12.6 billion, despite a year of strong gains in the markets. Chairman Edward C. Johnson III said in his annual letter that revenues were hurt by investors continuing to move out of the firm’s stock funds, and by “extremely low” interest rates, price pressures and lower trading volumes by customers.
Genzyme reports encouraging data for Gaucher disease drug candidate
Genzyme, the Cambridge biotechnology division of French drug maker Sanofi SA, reported positive data for an experimental drug for Gaucher disease, a rare genetic disorder that can cause swelling of the liver and spleen. Genzyme has an existing Gaucher disease drug on the market called Cerezyme. Cerezyme is delivered by infusion, once every other week, and the infusion process can take between one and two hours. The new Gaucher disease drug candidate is taken in pill form so it has the potential to be a more convenient option for some Gaucher disease patients.
Samuels & Associates proposes another tower in the Fenway
Developer Samuels & Associates is proposing to build a 22-story residential tower at the corner of Brookline Avenue and Boylston Street, replacing a dilapidated retail building with 320 residences and new stores on the ground floor.
Reebok launches ‘Live With Fire’ ad campaign
Reebok International Ltd., the Canton-based athletic footwear and apparel brand, is launching a new ad campaign called, “Live With Fire.” According to Reebok, the campaign “shows how living an active lifestyle can inspire people to live their lives with passion, intent, and purpose – and inspire others to do the same.” The campaign builds off the brand’s 2012 campaign --- “The Sport of Fitness Has Arrived.”
Boston officials OK AvalonBay tower near Garden
The Boston Redevelopment Authority has approved construction of 32-story residential tower next to the TD Garden that will include more than 500 apartments, restaurants and stores.
Town Sports International agrees to buy Fitcorp health clubs in Boston
Town Sports International Holdings Inc., a New York company that operates 160 health clubs, including 25 Boston Sports Clubs in this market, said it has signed a deal to acquire Fitcorp Clubs in Boston as it looks to escalate efforts to woo corporate clients. Financial details of the transaction were not included in Town Sports International’s press release. Fitcorp owns five health and fitness clubs and four managed clubs in the Boston market.
Keurig’s Vue coffee maker is an Edison Awards finalist
Keurig Vue Brewing System, a single-serve coffee machine with a Massachusetts connection, has been named a 2013 Award Finalist by the Edison Awards committee, which seeks to honor innovators and the legacy of inventor Thomas Alva Edison, said Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc., Keurig’s Vermont parent company. Keurig has much of its operations in Massachusetts. The Keurig Vue, which looks to push the envelope on java and joe innovation, is a finalist in the consumer packaged goods beverage preparation category.
