Steinway & Sons CEO to retire by year’s endSteinway Musical Instruments says the president and CEO of its Steinway & Sons Worldwide division will retire by year’s end. Thomas Kurrer, 63, became president of the unit, which concentrates on pianos, in 2008. He has worked for the company for 23 years. Steinway Musical Instruments Inc., which also makes trumpets, saxophones, and other instruments, said Friday that since it is already assessing its strategic options, SMI CEO Michael Sweeney will take on the additional role of president of Steinway & Sons Worldwide. | |||
Ironwood drug to treat irritable bowel syndrome moves closer to approval in EuropeIronwood Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Friday that a committee that advises European regulators has issued a positive opinion on its treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. The opinion by the European Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use is one of the final steps in the review of a marketing authorization application. Cambridge-based Ironwood’s partner in Europe is Almirall. The marketing name of drug is Constella in Europe and Linzess in the US. The chemical name for both is linaclotide. | |||
Fall River company plans expansion, adding jobsA family-owned Fall River company known for its high quality bed and bath linens is planning a $10 million expansion that will create about 70 jobs. Officials say John Matouk & Co. plans a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing building with construction expected to start in the spring. HFF arranges $170m construction loan for One Channel CenterHFF, a provider of commercial real estate and capital markets services, said that it has arranged a $170 million construction loan for One Channel Center, a 500,000-square-foot office building currently under development by AREA Property Partners and Commonwealth Ventures in Boston’s Seaport District. The project is for an 11-story office building that will be leased in its entirety to State Street Corp., a financial services firm headquartered in Boston. The project broke ground this past summer and is scheduled for completion in early 2014. | |||
Adidas: Reebok will sharpen its focus as a fitness brandThe corporate parent of Reebok International Ltd. told an investor conference that it will continue to position Reebok as the fitness brand that caters to such categories as fitness running, gym, yoga, and dance. Canton-based Reebok is now owned by Adidas, the German footwear giant. Earlier this month, Reebok disclosed that it had reorganized its senior management. Harvard Club reaches a $4 million settlement with waitstaff over tips not paidThe Harvard Club has reached a tentative $4 million settlement with its waitstaff over a dispute about tipping, according to a letter the exclusive alumni club sent its members earlier this week. Employees filed a class action lawsuit in November, claiming they had been cheated out of potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in tips because of a misleading 17 percent surcharge on food and beverage bills that the club stated was collected “in lieu of a gratuity.” | |||
Study: Massachusetts women earn about $14k less a year than Massachusetts menThe median yearly pay for women in Massachusetts is $14,079 less than the pay earned by Massachusetts men; that means that Bay State women earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts, the National Partnership for Women & Families said Thursday. An advocacy group, the partnership says that one of its goals is promoting fairness in the workplace. It said its analysis is based on US Census Bureau data. | |||
MBTA Silver Line service will remain free through JanuarySilver Line service between Logan International Airport and South Station will remain free through Jan. 6, the Massachusetts Port Authority said Thursday.
