Continuum Managed Services completes its relocation to Boston by moving into new offices

Continuum Managed Services LLC said Tuesday that it has completed the relocation of its worldwide headquarters from Pittsburgh to new offices in Boston. Continuum develops and supports software that information-technology services organizations use to remotely monitor and manage the computer systems of small- and mid-sized businesses. Summit Partners, an investment firm with offices in Boston, became Continuum’s majority owner about a year ago, and one reason for Continuum’s relocation is to be close to Summit. Boston’s strong talent pool was another factor in Continuum’s decision to relocate.

Boston.com launches the Hive, a new innovation section

Boston.com launched a new website Tuesday that aims to be a one-stop destination for news, information, and resources related to Massachusetts’ innovation economy. Called The Hive, the section covers start-ups, the venture community, and pioneers in sectors ranging from medicine to technology, through local reporting, video series, and a curated feed of news and ideas on innovation from around the Web. The new site can be found at www.boston.com/hive.

Akamai remembers death of co-founder on Sept. 11

At Akamai Technologies Inc. in Cambridge, Tuesday will begin the way every Sept. 11 since 2001 has begun, in a spirit of sorrow, pride and resolve. Employees here and at Akamai offices around the world will gather at the start of the work day to remember the company’s co-founder, Danny Lewin, one of the first victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

Bayer AG’s Marijn Dekkers to address BC’s Chief Executives’ Club of Boston

Marijn Dekkers, chairman and chief executive of the German global giant Bayer AG,will be the keynote speaker at Boston College’s Chief Executives’ Club of Boston lunch on Sept. 19, the club said. From 2002 to 2010, Dekkers served as chief executive of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a large laboratory science supplier headquartered in Waltham. Dekkers is set to deliver a talk titled, “Innovation: Who needs it?”

Mass. Association of Realtors: Pending home sales rose in August

The number of single-family homes and condominiums put under agreement was up again in August, the 16th straight month of year-over-year increases, the Massachusetts Association of Realtors said Tuesday. The number of Bay State single-family homes put under agreement in August was up 27.87 percent, and the number of condos put under agreement in August was up 30.73 percent. Pending sales can sometimes give an indication of where the local housing market might be heading.

SEC files charges against Bio Defense, executives for misleading investors about Boston firm

Federal regulators filed fraud charges in Massachusetts Monday against a Boston company that purportedly developed a machine to use radiation to kill dangerous biological agents, such as Anthrax, sent through the mail.

Microsoft to open holiday stores in Natick, Braintree

Microsoft Corp. is expanding its local retail footprint -- at least for the holidays. The Redmond, Wash., software giant announced Monday that it will open stores in Natick and Braintree this fall. The expansion follows Microsoft’s August opening of a store in The Shops at Prudential Center on Boylston Street -- its first Boston store -- and is part of its ongoing push into the retail marketplace to take on rival Apple Inc., which has 375 stores worldwide.

Travel association: Boston has the third-highest travel tax burden in the US

Boston has the third-highest travel tax burden in the nation, with visitors paying an average of $34.83 a day in sales tax and fees for travel-related services such as meals, car rentals, and hotels, according to the Global Business Travel Association. Chicago and New York have the highest rates of the 50 US cities surveyed, at $40.31 and $37.98, respectively. Three cities in Florida – Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and West Palm Beach – have the lowest.

Immunetics gets $3.7m NIH contract for blood screening test

Immunetics Inc., a Boston company specializing in technology for blood screening, has received a $3.7 million contract from an agency of the National Institutes of Health to support the testing of a new blood screening test for Babesia infection. Babesia is a parasite that is transmitted by the same ticks that transmit Lyme disease, and it can lead to severe or fatal illness, especially in people whose immune systems have been compromised. There is currently no licensed test available.

Ralph Lauren to sponsor Masterpiece on PBS

Masterpiece, the PBS drama series known for such recent programs as Downton Abbey and Sherlock, announced that Ralph Lauren Corp., the tony apparel brand, is becoming a national corporate sponsor for the series. It is the first television sponsorship for Ralph Lauren, Masterpiece said. Ralph Lauren’s first on-air sponsorship messages will begin Sept. 30 with the broadcast of Upstairs Downstairs, Masterpiece said. The company is planning to create unique spots for the various titles in the Masterpiece series.

AAA: Mass. gas prices are up 4 cents a gallon

The average price for gas in Massachusetts is $3.809 per gallon in the latest weekly AAA survey, up 4 cents from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said Monday. The local weekly averages are up 13 cents over the past month. The national average for gas is $3.82 a gallon. A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $3.65.
