Akamai acquires FastSoft

Akamai Technologies Inc., an Internet content delivery company headquartered in Cambridge, said that it has acquired FastSoft Inc., a provider of content acceleration software. Akamai did not disclose the purchase price in its press release, but did describe the deal as a cash transaction. The acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on Akamai’s financials.

Reinhart Foodservice agrees to buy AGAR Supply Co. of Taunton

AGAR Supply Co., a Taunton-based company that boasts that it is the largest independent food-service supply distribution in New England, has agreed to be acquired by Reinhart Foodservice LLC of Illinois, Reinhart announced Friday. No financial details of the transaction were disclosed. AGAR chief executive Karen Bressler said that it makes sense for a regional company such as AGAR to “combine with a larger business such as Reinhart.”

UK life sciences consultancy Alacrita opens small office in Kendall Square

Alacrita, a London-based consultancy to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and life science industries, is opening a small office in the Kendall Square, a Cambridge neighborhood that is a life sciences hotbed. For the moment, Alacrita’s office is a one-person operation, but the hope is that it will quickly expand to 10 people, said Rob Johnson, the Alacrita partner now in Cambridge. Alacrita’s decision to open a Cambridge office was announced by Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, the Massachusetts Office of International Trade & Investment, and MassBio.

Marshalls promotional road trip has a message: Marshalls is the place for real-time fashions

Marshalls, the Framingham-based chain that sells a lot of apparel, is launching a “Fashion Tour” to several major cities, including Boston. The tour’s message: That Marshalls is a great place to find good deals on the latest fashions. Shoppers have long known that Marshalls is a good place for bargains. But the job of this road trip seems to be that when it comes to Marshalls, folks should be thinking about the latest fashions as well as bargains.

Lehman Brothers loses bid to force former broker in Hingham to repay $200,000 signing bonus

Former Lehman Brothers broker Robert James Reilly of Hingham won’t have to repay a $200,000 signing bonus he received when he joined the failed Wall Street investment bank in 2006, an arbitration panel ruled this week. The signing bonus was structured as a loan that was supposed to be forgiven in stages if Reilly remained with the company for seven years. But Reilly’s attorney argued that the loan should have been forgiven when Lehman collapsed during the financial crisis four years ago and the assets were sold off to British bank Barclays and other firms

Comcast adds local wifi hotspots

Boston-area subscribers to Comcast Corp.’s Xfinity broadband Internet service now have a new way to get online. Comcast has set up dozens of Wi-Fi wireless Internet hotspots in Greater Boston, eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Abrams Capital Management raises $2.9 billion for new fund

Abrams Capital Management, one of Boston’s largest hedge fund firms, has raised $2.9 billion for its new fund, according to a filing with federal securities regulators. There are 457 investors in the fund, Abrams Capital Partners II, which posts a minimum investment of $5 million.

PerkinElmer teams with TIBCO Software on Big Data

Big Data has brought together two major Boston area technology outfits. PerkinElmer Inc., a Waltham life sciences company, acquired exclusive rights to use data analysis software from TIBCO Software Inc., a Palo Alto, Calif., company with a Somerville office, in scientific research and development markets.

Blu Homes raises nearly $60m

Blu Homes, a company that specializes in building homes that are “green” and environmentally friendly, said it has completed its first institutional round of investment, totaling nearly $60 million. Blu Homes has offices in Waltham and San Francisco. Institutional investment is being led by the Skagen Group, which is based in the Netherlands. With initial private funding, investment in Blu Homes now totals nearly $69 million, the company said.

JetBlue to add nonstop service between Boston and Charleston, S.C.

JetBlue Airways is adding nonstop service between Boston and Charleston, S.C., beginning Feb. 28. The carrier will make one flight a day between Logan International Airport and Charleston International Airport; JetBlue is also adding twice-daily flights between New York and Charleston.

Athenahealth to buy Healthcare Data Services

Athenahealth Inc., a Watertown company that provides on-demand billing, practice management, and electronic health record services to hospitals and doctors groups, has agreed to buy Healthcare Data Services LLC as a way a way to strengthen its ability to support health care organizations to manage risk-based payment models, and align care coordination with patient population needs. An athenahealth press release did not include financial details of the transaction, other than to say the deal is expected to close in October. Founded in 2004 in Boston, Healthcare Data Services, or HDS, provides health care data analysis.
