City of Lowell, Ameresco break ground on new solar installation

Ameresco Inc. said it hosted a Friday ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of a solar installation at a landfill site in Lowell. “More than 6,000 solar panels will soon revitalize the City of Lowell’s capped landfill site on Westford Street, transforming an under-utilized open space to a modern green-energy site that will generate electricity cost savings for the city,” Framingham-based Ameresco said.

Have a black belt in social media marketing? You may want to sign up for the ‘Dunkin’ Donuts Start-up Turbo Shot’ challenge

Think of it as an elevator-pitch competition for social media marketing ideas, only with some of the pitches submitted by video. That seems to be the idea behind a Friday announcement from Dunkin’ Donuts and its ad agency, Hill Holliday of Boston. In a press release, the two said they are sponsoring a competition --- dubbed the Dunkin’ Donuts Start-up Turbo Shot --- that asks start-ups from across the country to devise a plan that will help make Dunkin’ “the most social brand in America.”

AVEO seeks FDA approval for drug designed to treat advanced kidney cancer

AVEO Oncology of Cambridge and Japanese drug maker Astellas Pharma Inc. said Friday that AVEO has submitted a new drug application to the US Food and Drug Administration for a potential treatment for advanced kidney cancer. Their drug candidate is called tivozanib, and the companies said they are seeking FDA approval to market in the US as a treatment for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma, or RCC, a technical name for advanced kidney cancer.

Paratek files registration statement for proposed IPO

Paratek Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Friday that it has filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission relating to a proposed initial public offering of shares of its common stock. According to its website, Boston-based Paratek is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery and commercialization of new therapeutics that treat life threatening infectious and other serious diseases.

Steward Health Care terminates its agreement to buy Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket

Steward Health Care System said Thursday that it’s terminating its agreement to acquire Landmark Medical Center, the Woonsocket, RI, hospital it had been seeking to buy for the past three years.

MassMutual launches Youtube ‘webisode’ series on planning for retirement

MassMutual Financial Group, a Springfield-based company that offers a variety of financial services including retirement planning, said Thursday that one of its business units has just launched a “’webisode series” that seeks to educate consumers on how they should prepare for retirement. The series is called Smart View, and it is scheduled to air Mondays at 2 p.m. on the firm’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/retiresmart. The firm said that using social media is a good way to complement its marketing efforts and reach a wider audience.

Popular bootmaker Frye Company taking over former Charley’s spot on Newbury Street

The Frye Company, a popular bootmaker, plans to open a three-story flagship store on Newbury Street next spring in the space formerly occupied by Charley’s restaurant. Frye’s will take over 11,000 square feet at the corner of Newbury and Gloucester Streets. The new store -- Frye’s second US location -- will feature the brand’s leather footwear and handbags, along with a lounge for special events and vintage trunk shows. It also will provide private fit specialists and services for boot personalization.

Nominate someone who has championed diversity in Massachusetts

The winter issue of The Boston Globe’s Diversity Boston magazine will honor the people who have done the most for diversity in Massachusetts in recent years. Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized? We’re looking for nominations of people who have had an impact in every field such as business, government, nonprofit, schools and academia. We’re hoping to find people whose understanding of underrepresented groups has helped tear down old barriers and opened doors for all.

Yale, Stanford endowments post stronger investment results than Harvard’s

Two endowments that Harvard University’s is most often compared to produced stronger investment results than the Cambridge giant in the fiscal year that ended June 30. Yale University on Thursday said it earned a 4.7 percent return for the year, while Harvard on Wednesday reported essentially flat results, down 0.05 percent. And Stanford University on Thursday reported a 1 percent gain for the year.

Mass economy slipping into lower gear

The Massachusetts economy, which had been growing faster than the national average on the back of the state’s thriving research sectors, is slowing because of a combination of national and global problems, according to a University of Massachusetts bulletin released Thursday.

‘Let’s Eat.’ Allen & Gerritsen launches new ad campaign for Papa Gino’s

Boston ad agency Allen & Gerritsen said it has launched its first major ad campaign for Papa Gino’s, the Dedham-based chain of roughly 170 pizza restaurants that also sell wings. The campaign unveils a new tag-line: “Let’s Eat.” And one message that the ads seek to convey is that Papa Gino’s is New England’s pizzeria. According to the agency, the new campaign shows “New Englanders of all ages dropping what they are doing – literally – to gather together and enjoy Papa Gino’s pizza and wings.”

MassMutual launches Youtube ‘webisode’ series on planning for retirement

MassMutual Financial Group, a Springfield-based company that offers a variety of financial services including retirement planning, said Thursday that one of its business units has just launched a “’webisode series” that seeks to educate consumers on how they should prepare for retirement. IlluminOss Medical secures $28m Series C financing

IlluminOss Medical Inc., an East Providence company that has developed a bone stabilization system for treating fractures, said Thursday that it has secured a $28 million Series C round of venture capital financing. Tekla Capital Management, an investment advisor to H&Q Life Sciences Investors and H&Q Healthcare Investors, based in Boston, and Life Sciences Partners, a global health care and life science investment firm with offices in Amsterdam, Munich, and Boston, co-led the round.

Nuance agrees to buy health information management business

Nuance Communications Inc., a Burlington company known for its Dragon speech recognition software, said Thursday that it has agreed to buy Quantim, the health information management business of QuadraMed, a provider of information technology services to the health care industry. A Nuance press release did not provide financial details of the proposed transaction with Virginia-based QuadraMed. Quantim provides hospitals and health care organizations with software and services designed to maximize the productivity of health information management professionals while ensuring appropriate financial reimbursement to the institution.

Ocean Spray looks to ‘showcase’ the cranberry at Walt Disney World

Working on the theory perhaps that many Florida tourists aren’t as familiar with the cranberry as they ought to be, Ocean Spray is recreating a “free-standing” mini bog in the Sunshine State. The 1,300-square-foot bog will be located at Walt Disney World and can be viewed from Friday through Nov. 12 at the 2012 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Thanks to this mini bog, visitors can “feast their eyes on the beauty of the cranberry harvest and discover the cranberry’s secrets,” Ocean Spray said.

Tesla Motors is opening a showroom for its electric cars at Natick Mall

Tesla Motors, a California company that makes luxury electric vehicles, is gearing up to open a showroom at Natick Mall, its first in New England. The showroom is scheduled to open to the public Friday and it will be the company’s 16th retail location in North America. Visitors will be able to ogle the Model S, a sedan with a starting price of $57,400.

Harvard endowment dips slightly, to $30.7 billion, as European losses offset investment gains

Harvard University’s endowment was essentially flat in its fiscal year ended June 30, as steep declines in European and emerging markets wiped out gains in other areas. The nation’s largest college endowment shrunk by $1.3 billion in assets, ending the year with $30.7 billion, as it delivered funds to cover more than one-third of Harvard’s annual budget despite a lean year for its investments.

Catalina Marketing moves to Boston’s Seaport

A Florida-based technology company is moving to Boston’s Seaport District, where it intends to triple its number of employees over the next several years. Catalina Marketing Inc., a maker of digital advertising products, has signed a lease to move into 75,000-square-feet of office space at 24 Farnsworth Street. Earlier this year, the company acquired Quincy-based Modiv Media as part of its expansion into Boston.

Boston ranks 10th on KPMG survey for US cities with friendly tax structures for business

Boston placed 10th among US urban areas in an international survey of cities that offer the most favorable tax structures for businesses. The survey, a study of 55 cities from around the world, was issued by KPMG International, and it broke down results both globally and by US cities. Among US cities, the survey found that Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Cleveland offer the most favorable tax structures for businesses. It was in this category that Boston ranked 10th.

NStar Gas scores high in J.D. Power survey

NStar Gas, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities with roughly 300,000 gas customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts, said it was ranked high in a customer satisfaction study conducted by J. D. Power and Associates, a global marketing information services company. In seeking to measure the satisfaction of residential customers with their gas utilities, California-based J.D. Power broke down the results of its study by both region and size. Among midsize utilities in the East, NStar received J.D. Power’s top score.

UMass Memorial Medical Center to do away with another 140 full-time jobs

UMass Memorial Health Care is stepping up its restructuring efforts, telling employees Tuesday that it plans to pare another 140 full-time jobs at its flagship hospital in Worcester. In a letter to the system’s 13,200 employees, chief executive John G. O’Brien blamed declines health insurance payments and the number of patients it treats. He said the latest cuts will come on top of about the 150 positions that have been eliminated at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester since February.

InVivo holds ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new office in Kendall Square

InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp., a company developing technologies for the treatment of spinal cord injuries and neurotrauma, said it held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday for its new headquarters office at One Kendall Square in Cambridge. The new quarters will house the company’s office, manufacturing, and lab space in a 21,000-square-foot facility. The company’s 34 employees were previously located at several small offices and now will be consolidated under one roof.

Davio’s cuisine will be available at new Showcase Cinema in Chestnut Hill

Local theater goers may soon be able to enjoy upscale pizza and chicken parm spring rolls --- along with the latest Clint Eastwood movie --- under a plan that calls for a Davio’s Cucina restaurant to share space with a Showcase Cinemas theater now under construction in Chestnut Hill. Showcase Cinemas, part of National Amusements Inc., and Davio’s envision a state-of-the-art theater complex with fine-dining options; the complex will occupy 40,000 square feet of space that was once home to a Macy’s department store at the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center.

Who drinks the most coffee? Survey from Dunkin’ Donuts & CareerBuilder seeks to find out

Scientists drink more coffee than school teachers, and food-service workers down the most joe of all. That’s one take-away from a new survey commissioned by Dunkin’ Donuts, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked-goods chain, and CareerBuilder, a job-search website. The survey was released as National Coffee Day (Sept. 29) draws nigh, and one objective is to determine the coffee consumption habits of various professions and how the “daily grind” fits into the workplace (to filch a felicitous phrase from the Dunkin’/CareerBuilder press release).

State Street Global Markets: Investor confidence index falls in September

A global investor confidence index maintained by State Street Global Markets has dropped in September. As investors in North America and Asia shied away from risk, the global index fell from August’s revised reading of 91.0 to 86.9, said State Street Global Markets, the investment research and trading arm of State Street Corp., a Boston-based financial services company.
