Fidelity hails SEC backtrack on money market funds

Fidelity Investments on Thursday cheered the news that Securities and Exchange Commission won’t be adopting stricter rules for money market mutual funds any time soon.

Microsoft opens Boston store

Microsoft Corp. pulled out all the stops for the 10 a.m. Thursday opening of its new store in the Prudential Center, where hundreds had gathered in anticipation of the event. As a DJ blasted club music, a tarp fell away to reveal dozens of employees in brightly colored shirts jumping and waving. As the crowd pushed in, they were greeted with high-fives from the enthusiastic young staff. Microsoft also used the occasion to unveil a new corporate logo, a clean, squared-off take on its classic four-tone Windows logo.

Smart Lunches secures over $1m in Series A funding

Smart Lunches, an Internet provider of healthful meal options for children outside of the home, announced today that it closed a Series A investment round, said it has secured more than $1 million in additional capital. Investors included Boston-based Data Point Capital; Jonathan Kraft, president of the Kraft Group; and Lon Chow, general partner of Apex Venture Partners, Boston-based Smart Lunches said. Smart Lunches partners with schools, daycare centers and camps to serve children fresh, nutritious meals that parents can order 24 hours a day with the click of a mouse.

John Hancock’s Boston Marathon nonprofit raises record $6.8m

John Hancock, the financial services firm that is the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, said Wednesday that its Boston Marathon nonpofit program raised a record $6.8 million as part of the 116th running of the historic race in April. The amount represents a 29 percent increase over 2011’s fundraising results. One reason for the increase: John Hancock said it increased the resources it has put behind the Boston Marathon program, in part by giving additional help to its nonprofit fund-raising partners.

Wendy’s plans ‘Son of Baconator’ freebie event for Boston City Hall Plaza

Discerning epicures could be flocking en masse to Boston City Hall Plaza Thursday as the Wendy’s restaurant chain prepares to give away free samples of one of its latest menu items --- the Son of Baconator Cheeseburger. Thursday’s plan calls for Wendy’s to hand out free Sons of Baconators from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. --- or as long as supplies last. These burgers will be thoughtfully accessorized with a Wendy’s Frosty on the side, the company says. And there will be plenty of “bacon-themed” T-shirts and merchandise to boot.

GI Dynamics gets FDA conditional OK for a trial of its EndoBarrier obesity treatment

GI Dynamics Inc., a medical device company with offices in Lexington, announced Thursday that it has received conditional approval from the Food and Drug Administration to start a pivotal clinical trial of its EndoBarrier device for the treatment of patients who have uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and who are obese. According to the company’s website, the EndoBarrier is placed in the intestine through a small tube that is inserted through the mouth, mimicking the effects of gastric bypass, without the risks associated with surgery.

Battery maker A123 faces possible delisting by Nasdaq

Waltham lithium-ion battery maker A123 Systems has been warned that the struggling firm’s low share price could get it removed from the Nasdaq stock market or moved to a smaller exchange, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Lenny Kravitz and Paul Pierce will help Microsoft celebrate the opening of its first Mass. store

Technology giant Microsoft Corp. said that rocker Lenny Kravitz and Celtics basketball star Paul Pierce will help celebrate the opening of its first store in Massachusetts. The store is scheduled to open at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Shops at Prudential Center in Boston. Later in the day, Pierce will be at the store to play video games with customers and fans at 6 p.m. As part of the grand opening festivities, Microsoft is also sponsoring a special performance by Kravitz.

Brendan Fitzgerald joins FOX25 as sports anchor

Brendan Fitzgerald joins FOX25 as a sports anchor on such telecasts as “FOX25 News at 6,” “FOX25 News at 10,” and “FOX 25 News at 11,” the local television station said Wednesday. For the past two years, Fitzgerald served as weekend sports anchor/sports reporter for KGBT Action 4 News in Harlingen, Texas, added FOX 25, which is also known as WFXT-TV (Channel 25). Fitzgerald grew up on the Cape. “Covering sports in Boston has been a lifelong dream of mine,” he said.

EMD Millipore to buy cell culture specialist Biochrom AG

EMD Millipore, the Billerica-based life science division of Merck KGaA, has agreed to buy Biochrom AG, which specializes in the production and marketing of cell-culture media and buffer solutions. Terms were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Based in Germany, Biochrom has about 60 employees. EMD Millipore has around 10,000 employees. EMD Millipore said the acquisition will strengthen its process solutions business unit, which provides products and services that simplify production for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturers.
