PayPal to move to Financial District

Online payment company PayPal, a division of Internet auction giant eBay Inc., has signed a lease to occupy 65,000 square feet in One International Place, one of Boston’s tallest office buildings, according to The Chiofaro Company, the complex’s developer and manager.

Belmont man charged with running a Ponzi scheme

Secretary of State William F. Galvin on Tuesday charged John W. Cranney of Belmont with running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded at least 36 victims nationally of $10.4 million, by promising high returns on safe investments for retirement. The state’s Securities Division alleged in an administrative complaint that Cranney took client funds for his own use.

Bank of America plans to offer mobile deposits

Bank of America Corp., the largest bank in Massachusetts, confirmed Tuesday it plans to start letting customers deposit checks using their smart phone and tablet computers starting this week, the latest financial institution to offer mobile deposits.

Samuel Adams offers ‘Brewlywed Ale,’ a beer for romantics

Lovebird lager? The folks at Samuel Adams want to alert beer buffs that the company’s brew-meisters have crafted a new beer for consumers who are engaged or just married. “Brewlywed Ale” is billed as a special, limited release product and one that has the versatility to be paired with wedding-reception fare. But beer enthusiasts must act fast because this product could be as ephemeral as sudden love --- just 400 cases have been brewed.

Comcast offering new options for high-speed Internet service

Comcast Corp. said that starting this week, it is doubling the speeds of two of its existing Internet speed tiers in certain markets, including Greater Boston, at no additional cost to home subscribers. Xfinity Blast! customers will now get download speeds of up to 50 million bits per second; previously, they could get 25 million bits per second, Comcast said. According to the company, this is the seventh time since 2002 that it has increased speeds for its customers.

Histogenics closes $49m Series A round

Histogenics Corp., a regenerative medicine company based in Waltham, announced Tuesday the completion of a $49 million round of financing. The syndicate was led by Sofinnova Ventures with participation from additional new investors Split Rock Partners, BioMed Ventures, and FinTech GIMV Fund L.P. Existing investors ProChon Holdings BV, Altima Partners, Foundation Medical Partners, Inflection Point Capital, and Boston Millennia Partners also participated in the financing.

EMC reiterates 2012 sales, profit projections on storage demand

EMC Corp., the world’s biggest maker of storage computers, said sales and profit for the year will meet prior forecasts, reiterating a prediction that the Hopkinton-based company made last week when announcing a management shuffle. Full-year 2012 profit, excluding some items, will be $1.70 a share, on revenue of $22 billion, the company said Tuesday in a statement, affirming its July 17 forecast. EMC said in April it would “meet or potentially exceed” those forecasts.

Software maker VMware buys Nicira for $1.26b

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Business software maker VMware is buying computer networking specialist Nicira for nearly $1.3 billion. EMC Corp., the Hopkinton-based data storage equipment maker, owns a controlling stake in VMware.

Biogen reports 2Q profit fises, boosts forecast

Biogen Idec Inc., the third-largest US biotechnology company by revenue, reported profit that beat analysts’ estimates as sales increased from its top-selling multiple sclerosis medicine Avonex. The Weston-based company boosted its full-year forecast.

The Warren Group: Mass. home sales in June post best month in two years

In June, single-family home sales in Massachusetts rose to the highest level for any month in two years, more evidence that the local housing market could be on the mend, the Warren Group reported Tuesday morning. According to the Warren Group, 5,498 single-family homes were sold in June, up nearly 26 percent from 4,368 a year earlier. This marks the best month for sales since June 2010. But for the second consecutive month, single-family home prices fell slightly on a year-to-year comparison basis.

Boston Globe offers buyouts to some employees

The Boston Globe on Monday offered buyout packages to 43 editorial and advertising employees and laid off about 10 people. The Globe notified 23 people in advertising and 20 in the newsroom that they were eligible for a buyout. The packages are voluntary. Monday’s layoffs did not affect reporters or editors in the newsroom. The company does not expect everyone to accept the buyouts, which were offered to both union and non-union employees. The Globe has a total of 1,881 employees.
