Cambridge Savings Bank expands Sunday hours

Cambridge Savings Bank is adding Sunday hours at more branches, becoming the latest bank in Massachusetts to operate seven days a week at a substantial portion of its locations. The Cambridge bank, which has 16 branches in the Boston area, recently started opening for five hours on Sunday in Acton, Burlington, and Porter Square in Cambridge. The banks said Friday it plans to add Sunday hours to two more branches in Newtonville and Arlington Center on July 15.

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and wife Shonda Schilling defend failed video game company 38 Studios

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and his wife took to Facebook Friday to defend his failed video game company, 38 Studios, which filed for bankruptcy last month. On Thursday, the Associated Press reported that for days, 38 Studios put off state auditors who were seeking access to the company’s financial records in late May after 38 Studios shuttered its operations. The state is trying to piece together what happened after 38 Studios burned through nearly $50 million of a state-backed loan.

A123 Systems hopes to raise $9m in share offering

A123 Systems Inc., a maker of batteries for electric vehicles that is struggling to stay in business, said Friday that it plans to sell stock and warrants to raise about $9 million in proceeds after expenses. The Waltham-based company also said it expects to soon have access to $30 million in previously restricted cash. But its shares fell more than 10 percent in midday trading. The company warned in May that it continues to post significant losses and may not be able to stay in business unless it’s able to secure more financing.

Negotiations resume at Pilgrim nuclear plant, two weeks after union rejected contract deal

Negotiations have resumed between union workers at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth and Entergy Corp., the plant’s owner. Talks between the two parties broke off two weeks ago after members of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 369 voted to reject a contract deal tentatively approved by union leaders. The new round of talks is being overseen by a federal mediator. Both sides have indicated that the remaining disagreements center around health care benefits.

PerkinElmer looks to raise awareness for pre-eclampsia screening for pregnant women

PerkinElmer Inc., a Waltham life sciences company that makes lab instruments and genetic screening products, said it has entered into a collaboration with the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants to increase awareness of pre-eclampsia screening for pregnant women in Europe. Pre-eclampsia is considered a major cause of premature birth. It is estimated to affect nearly 8.4 million women worldwide a year. PerkinElmer makes a screening product that helps to determine which pregnant women are likely to develop pre-eclampsia.

YoFresh to open a yogurt cafe in Newton

A YoFresh Yogurt Café franchisee has leased about 950 square feet of retail space in Newton and plans to open a shop in either late summer or early fall, said a broker involved in the transaction. The broker is the Grossman Cos. Inc., a Quincy firm that provides landlord and tenant services. In the transaction for space at 14 Austin St., the Grossman Cos. represented the landlord, Austin Street Realty Trust. YoFresh Yogurt Cafe is a chain that offers all natural yogurts through franchised shops and kiosks.

Milford man pays off mortgage with pennies

A Massachusetts man who pledged to make the last mortgage payment on his home with pennies has fulfilled that promise. After warning his bank, Thomas Daigle in April dropped off about 62,000 pennies weighing 800 pounds in two boxes for the final payment on the Milford home he and his wife, Sandra, bought in 1977. He tells The Milford Daily News he just wanted to make his last payment ‘‘memorable.’’

First Wind project in Hawaii begins commercial operations

First Wind, a Boston-based wind energy company, announced that construction of its 21-megawatt Kaheawa Wind II project in Hawaii has been completed, and commercial operations have begun. Along with the Kaheawa Wind I project, which went online about several years ago, the new Kaheawa Wind II project will have the combined output to generate enough energy to power up to 18,700 Maui homes annually. The new project advances the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, which aims to have 70 percent of Hawaii’s energy come from clean, renewable sources by 2030.

Website stirs rumors concerning the future of WFNX signal

A website stirred up speculation on Thursday that Clear Channel Communications Inc. plans to simulcast conservative talk programs on alternative rock outlet WFNX 101.7 FM in Boston.

MassHousing closes $4.4m in financing for senior housing in West Roxbury

MassHousing, the state’s affordable housing bank, said Thursday that it has closed on $4.4 million in financing to help build Cheriton Heights Senior Housing in Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood. With 70 rental apartments, the project is a new affordable housing community for senior citizens, and the new six-story building will be located next to an existing 60-unit building for seniors called the Cheriton Grove Apartments. The new building is scheduled for completion in August 2013.

Vt., NH, and Maine telecom offers copper reward

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — FairPoint Communications is offering rewards to help find the people responsible for a series of copper thefts across Vermont, New Hampshire ,and Maine. The company says that in Vermont alone copper thefts have cost the company $20,000. FairPoint Security Manager Marc Lussier says the thefts are a growing public safety concern that could cause a loss of service for people who need emergency services and there is also concern that an untrained person removing cable could be injured.
