Jul. 23, 2012 Navy radio might be crippling Conn. garage doorsHARTFORD, Conn. — The US Navy says a military new radio system may be keeping some people in southeastern Connecticut from opening and closing their garage doors. Chris Zendan, a spokesman for submarine base in Groton, tells the Day of New London that the Enterprise Land Mobile Radio system can interfere with garage-door openers. Overhead Door Co. of Norwich Inc. tells the newspaper it’s been receiving complaints from several towns near the base, and has found no problem with its equipment. | |||

AAA: Average price for gas in Mass. rises 9 cents a gallonThe average price for gas in Massachusetts was $3.569 a gallon in the latest weekly survey from AAA, up 9 cents from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said Monday. This is the third consecutive week of increases, the association added; prices locally are up 20 cents over the last three weeks. The current national average for gas is $3.47 a gallon. A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $3.74. | |||
Bulfinch buys Atrium Mall and will convert it into a medical and office centerAn affiliate of the Bulfinch Cos., a Needham-based real estate investment firm, said Monday that it has acquired the troubled Atrium Mall in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Newton and added that it plans to convert the property to a medical and office center. A purchase price was not disclosed. A Bulfinch spokeswoman identified the seller as Mayflower Atrium LLC. Bulfinch said it will rebrand the roughly 300,000-square-foot property on Route 9 as “Atrium Center at Chestnut Hill” after extensive renovations that are scheduled for completion next year. | |||

Staples kicks off annual school supply drive for kids in needOffice supply giant Staples Inc. is holding its annual school supply drive, and this year, the company plans to donate more than $130,000 worth of supplies to needy students nationwide. Kayak rises in Wall Street debutThe Facebook curse is over. Shares in online travel company Kayak Software Corp. rose 32.6 percent to close at $34.49 on Friday, the company’s first day of trading in the only initial public offering for a consumer Internet company since Facebook Inc.’s disappointing market debut. Kayak sold 3.5 million shares at $26 -- above its price range -- raising $91 million almost two years after the company first filed to go public. The company is trading under the symbol KYAK. | |||
New stores are coming to Square One Mall in SaugusSquare One Mall is readying for the back-to-school shopping season with a number of new stores openings, officials for the Saugus shopping complex said. A123 surges on China grid-stabilization contractA123 Systems Inc., a Waltham-based maker of lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, surged the most in more than a month after winning a contract to supply a 2-megawatt system to China’s Ray Power Systems Co. to help regulate power- grid frequency. A123 shares rose 13 percent to 78 cents at 9:35 a.m in New York. The batteries will store electricity until needed to help stabilize China’s electric grid and allow for the integration of fluctuating renewable-energy resources such as wind and solar power plants. | |||
