Jul. 18, 2012 Tempur-Pedic opens luxury mattress store at the Natick MallTempur-Pedic International Inc., a manufacturer and marketer of luxury mattresses, has just opened a store in the Natick Mall, the first company owned store in its history. The Kentucky-based company has previously sold its products online or in traditional retailers such as Jordan’s Furniture in this market --- will continue to do so. Tempur-Pedic beds generally range in price from $700 to $8,500, and the demographic profile of Boston’s western suburbs matches neatly with the profile of Tempur-Pedic’s customer base. JetBlue launches Providence serviceJetBlue Airlines announced Wednesday that it will begin service from T.F. Green International Airport near Providence, R.I., to multiple destinations in Florida beginning Nov. 29. T.F. Green becomes the 75th destination within JetBlue’s network of airports. JetBlue will initially offer two daily nonstop service to Orlando International Airport and one daily flight to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. | |||
New line from Yankee Candle celebrates the fragrance of coconutsYankee Candle, a Deerfield-based retailer with more than 550 stores, has launched its latest collection of scented candles. The new line features the coconut as a key component. One new offering is the Coconut & Mandarin candle. When lit, it’s “like a tropical vacation for your spirits,” Yankee Candle says. Will the new line give Yankee’s “Man Candles” a run for the money? The company says it’s had some success with candles that can perk up a man cave or evoke the fragrances of the garage workshop. | |||
Sanofi signs diabetes research agreement with Brigham and Women’s HospitalSanofi SA, the French drug giant that bought Cambridge-based Genzyme Corp. for $20.1 billion last year, announced a new research collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching and research affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The collaboration is focused on the immunology of type 1 diabetes. Under the agreement, researchers from both organizations will undertake studies for a novel approach to treat type 1 diabetes. Sanofi has an option to exclusively license intellectual property emerging from this collaboration. | |||
UMass Medical School to manage health care at federal prison in North CarolinaThe Federal Bureau of Prisons has awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School a contract to manage comprehensive medical services to about 4,900 inmates at the Federal Medical Center located in Butner, N.C. The agreement, valued at $24.7 million for the first year, represents the school’s largest federal correctional health contract to date. The contract also has options for four additional years that could increase the overall award to more than $136 million through 2016. | |||

Samsonite to pay $110m for High Sierra Sport bagmakerSamsonite International SA, the branded luggage maker based in Mansfield, agreed to buy High Sierra Sport Co. for $110 million to add casual, outdoor and sports bags. The company also said it will consider more acquisitions this year. The cash deal for Illinois-based High Sierra is expected to close this month. The acquisition is Samsonite’s first since its initial public offering a year ago. | |||
Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts receive approval to form health insurance cooperativeThe state Division of Insurance has certified the Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts as a health insurance buying cooperative, enabling the trade group to offer health insurance from private carriers at lower rates for its member businesses. The new ASM Health Insurance Coop, which will also offer a wellness program intended to improve health and cut down on future medical expenses, is the third purchasing cooperative approved by Massachusetts insurance regulators under a 2010 law signed by Gov. RI agency in disarray after 38 Studios collapseThe collapse of Curt Schilling’s video gaming company has left Rhode Island’s economic development agency in disarray — without a permanent chief and a half size board. The Economic Development Corp. has been without a permanent executive director since May, when Keith Stokes resigned, facing questions over the $75 million loan guarantee the EDC board approved in 2010 for Schilling’s 38 Studios. But several other leaders at the agency have also stepped down, leaving six of the 12 appointed spots on the board vacant. | |||
Cake Boss comes to BJ’s --- and he’s bringing ‘Da Bomb.’ Cupcakes to followBuddy Valastro --- a.k.a. the Cake Boss --- is bringing the culinary flair that has made him a reality TV star to BJ’s Wholesale Club, the Westborough-based chain that operates warehouse club stores in 15 states. The owner of the now famous Carlo’s Bake Shop in Hoboken, N.J., Valastro has teamed up with BJ’s to create two cakes that are being rolled out to BJ’s 195 clubs.
