Senator John Kerry urges Congress to act on Internet privacy

US Senator John Kerry called President Obama’s proposed online privacy principles “an important statement of priorities” and urged Congress to take action on “common sense rules” that protect consumers. Earlier this week, the Obama administration outlined a set of principles designed to help consumers control the use of their personal data that is gathered during Internet searches. Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, said that Obama’s proposal is “wholly consistent” with legislation that he and US Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican, have been promoting.

US Postal Service plan: Big Boston facility will stay open

The US Postal Service’s massive Boston mail processing facility will stay open at its current location under a new plan released today that saves the plant from closure, but affects other centers in Wareham, Waltham, and Shrewsbury. The Boston plant may eventually relocate to elsewhere in the city to make way for the planned expansion of South Station, but no final decisions have been made. Under the plan, the postal service will consolidate operations from central and northwest Massachusetts into the Boston facility, which will gain employees.

Lynch calls it “premature” to tap oil reserve to tamp down gas prices

Splitting with some of his Democratic colleagues, US Representative Stephen Lynch said today that he doesn’t favor releasing oil crude from the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve to try to drive down gas prices. In addition, Lynch joined the chorus of Republicans and Democrats who called for overhauling the tax system, but said it might be difficult to broker a deal between Republicans and Democrats, partly because it’s an election year.

Katherine Bowdish is the new president of Permeon Biologics

Permeon Biologics Inc. announced the appointment of Katherine S. Bowdish to the positions of president and chief scientific officer. The top managment positions at the Cambridge company are president and executive chairman, and Bowdish has assumed the day-to-date duties of leading Permeon. She has also been appointed to the company’s board. John Edwards is the company’s executive chairman. Permeon is looking to leverage its understanding of intracellular protein biologics to develop new treatments for diseases.

New Jack Daniels ads from Arnold feature Zac Brown Band

Boston ad agency Arnold Worldwide is breaking some new TV ads for client Jack Daniels, the Tennessee whiskey brand. The ads feature the Zac Brown Band, also known as ZBB. Jack Daniels announced last August that ZBB would be working on several marketing initiatives for the brand. The ads seek to convey a “message of authenticity that encourages friends, fans, and all consumers to drink responsibly,” Arnold said. To see the ads, please click on “Full Entry.”

Iron Mountain 4Q net income edges up

Iron Mountain Inc.’s net income edged up in the fourth quarter as storage revenue improved for the provider of document management and recovery services. The Boston company reported today that its net income rose to $32.1 million, or 18 cents per share, for the period ended Dec. 31 from $32 million, or 16 cents per share. Excluding impairment charges and other items, earnings were 33 cents per share. That beat the 29 cents per share that analysts polled by FactSet expected.

Somerville apartment building sells for $3.4m

Abbey Place Realty Trust has sold an apartment building in Somerville’s Union Square to Heath Properties for $3.4 million, said a broker involved in the transaction. The broker is NAI Hunneman, a Boston-based commercial real estate services firm. The 17-unit building is located at 17 Bow St., a former church that was converted into a residential building in 1990. The building is made up of studio, one-, and two-bedroom units.

Satori raises $15m in new funding

Satori Pharmaceuticals, a Cambridge company focused on developing treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, has raised an additional $15 million in financing and elected a new chairman to its board of directors. Current investors InterWest Partners, New Enterprise Associates Inc., and Prospect Venture Partners co-led the round. Satori added that Donald Hayden was elected as chairman of its board. Hayden had a 25-year career with Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.

Coakley among 36 AGs concerned over Google privacy changes

Attorney General Martha Coakley was one of 36 attorneys general to sign a letter to Google Inc. today raising concerns about the company’s new privacy policy, which takes effect March 1.

Clean Harbors rises to record after earnings

Clean Harbors Inc., a provider of waste-management services, rose to its highest price since it went public 25 years ago after reporting earnings that beat analysts’ estimates. Clean Harbors gained 7.2 percent to $70.31 in early afternoon trading after hitting $71.63, the highest price since it went public in 1987. The Norwell-based company today reported fourth-quarter earnings of 72 cents a share, beating the average estimate of 49 cents of seven analysts compiled by Bloomberg.

Release oil from national reserve to quell soaring gas prices, Congressman Markey says

In the face of rising gasoline prices, US Representative Edward J. Markey and two other lawmakers today called on the Obama administration to help drive down the fuel’s costs by releasing crude oil -- used to make gas -- from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve. Gas prices have spiked most recently as tensions with Iran have escalated over fears that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programs will disrupt global oil supplies. Crude was trading at close to $106 a barrel today in New York
