Grocer ALDI set to open first NH storeALDI, an Illinois-based discount chain, plans to open its first store in New Hampshire next month. The store is located in Salem, N.H., and a grand opening is scheduled for March 1. According to ALDI, the chain has roughly 1,200 stores in 32 states, including six in Massachusetts. One ALDI claim is that its store brands can save customers 50 percent or more on many commonly purchased grocery items. | |||
Robert (Knob) Moses is leaving iRobotBedford robot maker iRobot Corp. said that the head of its government and industrial robots division is leaving to “pursue other interests.” Robert (Knob) Moses will remain with the company through a transition period; Tim Trainer will take over as the division’s interim general manager. The company has begun a search for a replacement for Moses. Shares of iRobot recently plunged after the company warned of possible losses as cuts in defense spending reduce demand for its military robots. | |||
Boston Redevelopment Authority approves revised Merano project near TD GardenBoston officials last night approved a revised plan for construction of the Merano, a complex with 230 apartments, a hotel, and stores on state-owned land across from TD Garden. Boston Development Group intends to break ground on the $165 million complex within the next couple of months. In its latest plan, approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority last night, the firm will build the apartments and hotel above retail shops, restaurants, and 184 parking spaces. | |||
Belgian Navy to deploy more AUVs from Hydroid Inc.Hydroid Inc., a Bourne-based manufacturer of autonomous underwater vehicles, or AUVs, said that the Belgian Navy is adding two of the company’s AUVs to its fleet. One Hydroid AUV model is the REMUS 100. The Belgian Navy plans to use two new REMUS 100s to detect underwater mines, improvised explosive devices, and other undetonated ordnances. The REMUS 100 is a torpedo-shaped device that generally weighs about 80 pounds. It is designed to operate in coastal environments at depths of up to 100 meters. | |||
Brightcove shares rise in first day of tradingShares of Brightcove Inc., a Cambridge company known for its Internet video platform and online video tools, rose in their first day of trading. The company had priced an initial public offering of 5 million shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $11 per share. At mid-day, shares were trading $14.48, up nearly 32 percent. HarborOne Credit Union considers changing status to become a bankHarborOne Credit Union of Brockton, the second largest credit union in New England, has started the process of becoming a bank. In a statement posted on its website today, HarborOne said making the change to a mutually owned co-operative bank would allow it to reach a wider group of customers, make more commercial loans and potentially raise more capital in the future. “This is the right approach for us at this time,” said HarborOne chief executive James W. Liberty Wharf has completed office leasingThe developer of Liberty Wharf in Boston’s Seaport District has completed office leasing for the complex, signing new deals this week with the software firm RStudio and the law firm Hayes Bostock and Cronin. The leases cap a sweeping transformation of the Northern Avenue property, which was formerly occupied by the restaurant Jimmy’s Harborside. It is now home to a sleek glass building with offices and four new restaurants, including Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse and the three-story Legal’s Harborside. | |||
Irish security firm opens US headquarters in BostonNetwatch, a security monitoring company based in Carlow, Ireland, said today it would open its American headquarters in Boston. The nine-year-0ld firm, which provides real-time video monitoring services for businesses and private residences, expects to hire as many as 100 people over the next three years for its local office and invest more than $4 million into its US expansion. Tetraphase drug candidate lands federal contract worth up to $67mTetraphase Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a life sciences company located in Watertown, said that its lead drug candidate has been awarded a government contract worth up to $67 million. Under the contract, Tetraphase’s lead clinical compound, known as TP-434, will be developed as a potential countermeasure against bioterrorism threats. The contract is from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, a unit in the US Department of Health and Human Services. According to Tetraphase, TP-434 has the potential to combat pathogens that terrorists might use. | |||
Fidelity’s Pyramis unit has new CEOFidelity Investments named a new chief of its institutional investment arm, Pyramis Global Advisors. Mike Jones will be president and chief executive of the Smithfield, R.I.-based investment group. He was previously with Columbia Management, a unit of Ameriprise Financial, where he was president of US Asset Management, overseeing $326 billion. Jones succeeds Kevin Uebelein, who has run Pyramis since 2008 and is taking a newly created role as global head of Solutions Delivery for the company. | |||
