Team working on a next-generation underwater vehicle includes Bluefin

Bluefin Robotics said today that is joining with the Columbia Group to invest in a next generation large submersible vehicle. Quincy-based Bluefin specializes in the design and manufacture of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles, or UUVs. The Columbia Group is developing the mechanical and electrical systems for a large undersea vehicle called Proteus. The Proteus is capable of operation in either manned or autonomous modes, and Bluefin’s autonomy technology is being incorporated for use in unmanned missions.

Jumptap: Vibram FiveFingers ads show the effectiveness of mobile marketing

Jumptap, a Cambridge company that helps their clients target their mobile advertising, said that a recent marketing campaign on behalf of Vibram FiveFingers shoes persuaded many consumers to check out Vibram’s online store. Jumptap worked with two other agencies to develop a special ad that sought to engage consumers on their smartphones and other mobile devices. The ads drove three out of every five viewers who engaged with the ad to Vibram’s online store, Jumptap said.

Sam Adams is brewing special beer for the Boston Marathon

The Boston Beer Co., best known for its Samuel Adams brand line of brews, said it is preparing a special commemorative beer to mark the 2012 Boston Marathon. The company is planning to unveil “Samuel Adams Boston 26.2 Brew” at a news conference scheduled for Thursday at the Samuel Adams Brewery. At the conference, Boston Beer is expected to formally announce its first-ever partnership with the Boston Athletic Association, which manages the Boston Marathon.

Triumph Motorcycles to use more PTC software

Parametric Technology Corp., a Needham company that refers to itself as PTC, said that Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. will now use PTC’s Windchill product lifecycle management software. According to PTC, Windchill will enable the iconic British motorcycle brand to better collaborate on new product designs as well as share selected information with Triumph suppliers. As companies become more global and source parts and materials from around the world, the need for a lifecyle management software has grown more critical.

Visible Measures gets accreditation for system that measures social media marketing

A tracking system devised by Visible Measures Corp. has been granted industry accreditation for measuring the performance of online video viewed on social media. Visible Measures, a company with offices in Boston, describes its Metrics tracking system as an analytics and advertising platform. The Media Rating Council, an industry group that audits and accredits media measurement services, has voted to grant accreditation to a range of Visible Measures’ metrics for digital video, the company said.

Walmart opening another New England grocery store -- this time in Connecticut

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which has already announced plans to open its first grocery store in the northeast in Somerville, is planning to open a second grocery market in West Hartford, Conn by the end of 2012. Both stores, offering fresh produce and other groceries, would be less than half the size of Walmart’s typical discount superstores. It’s unclear which will open first.

Boston Globe wins four awards from Society of American Business Editors and Writers, including three for fish-mislabeling series

The Boston Globe won four awards in the Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ annual Best in Business contest, including three honors for its series on the mislabeling of fish. Reporters Jenn Abelson and Beth Daley won in the feature and explanatory categories for “Fishy Business.” The series also won for “creative use across multiple platforms.” The Business section staff was honored in the breaking news category for coverage of the 634-point drop in the Dow on Aug. 8.

Hospital giant Partners HealthCare posts 24 percent lower financial gain in first quarter

Partners HealthCare System Inc. reported that its first-quarter financial gain fell 24 percent from a year earlier as a drop in investment earnings offset higher operating income for its hospitals and doctors in the three months ending Dec. 31.

Grocer ALDI set to open first NH store

ALDI, an Illinois-based discount chain, plans to open its first store in New Hampshire next month. The store is located in Salem, N.H., and a grand opening is scheduled for March 1. According to ALDI, the chain has roughly 1,200 stores in 32 states, including six in Massachusetts. One ALDI claim is that its store brands can save customers 50 percent or more on many commonly purchased grocery items.

Robert (Knob) Moses is leaving iRobot

Bedford robot maker iRobot Corp. said that the head of its government and industrial robots division is leaving to “pursue other interests.” Robert (Knob) Moses will remain with the company through a transition period; Tim Trainer will take over as the division’s interim general manager. The company has begun a search for a replacement for Moses. Shares of iRobot recently plunged after the company warned of possible losses as cuts in defense spending reduce demand for its military robots.
