Mullen appoints new president
Boston ad agency Mullen said that Alex Leikikh is the new president of the agency’s headquarters office. Leikikh, who will lead the day-to-day operations of Mullen’s headquarters office, takes over from Joe Grimaldi. Grimaldi, who had held the titles of president and chief executive, will now become chairman and chief executive. Leikikh joined Mullen in 2009 and is credited with playing key roles in landing such accounts as Zappos, JetBlue, and the Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader.

Mass. gas prices rise a penny
The average price for gas in Massachusetts is $3.659 a gallon in the latest weekly survey from AAA, up 1 cent from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said today. The current national average is $3.64 a gallon. A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $2.60 a gallon. In the survey out this morning, the range in Bay State gas prices is 36 cents, from a low of $3.49 to a high of $3.85.

Bruker to buy Center for Tribology
Scientific instruments maker Bruker Corp. said today that it agreed to buy Center for Tribology Inc. for an undisclosed sum. The privately held, California-based Center for Tribology provides testing and consulting services to technology companies. It’s expected to post more than $10 million in revenue this year. Bruker said it plans to incorporate the center’s business management, operations, research and development, sales, and support into its nano surfaces division. The deal is expected to close at the end of the third quarter.

Timberland taps Kiva Systems
Kiva Systems, a North Reading company that makes robots for automating warehouses, said that the Timberland Co. will implement a Kiva system to automate its fulfillment activities in a new European distribution center. Headquartered in New Hampshire, Timberland is known for its rugged footwear and outdoor clothing. Perhaps its most recognizable product is a yellow boot. Timberland is building a distribution center in the Netherlands, where a Kiva system will be deployed.

VideoIQ has new CEO, new funding
VideoIQ, a Bedford company specializing in video surveillance products and services, announced that it has a new chief executive and $7.5 million in Series C funding. Ed Bednarcik is the company’s new president and chief executive. VideoIQ added that it has raised its $7.5 million in a Series C funding from Atlas Venture, Cisco, Matrix Partners, and Tenaya Capital.  VideoIQ’s offers such products as advanced surveillance cameras as well as video management services.

Tensha raises $15m in Series A financing
Tensha Therapeutics said today that it has raised $15 million in a Series A financing to advance the development of potential cancer treatments. HealthCare Ventures, a Cambridge venture capital firm focused on the life sciences industry, is the sole investor in the financing, Cambridge-based Tensha Therapeutics said. In seeking to create new drugs, Tensha is using technology developed at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute by Dr. James Bradner. Tensha has an exclusive license to the technology from Dana-Farber.

Drug application could land Curis $8m
Curis Inc., a Lexington drug development company, said today that it is in line to receive an $8 million milestone payment from Genentech, its collaborator on a project to develop a treatment for a common form of skin cancer. Genentech, a unit of the Swiss drug maker Roche Group, has just submitted a new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration. If the FDA accepts the submission, Curis is eligible to receive an $8 million milestone payment from Genentech.

Shaw’s unveils sustainable seafood program
Shaw’s Supermarkets today launched its new sustainable seafood program with a giant 12-foot lobster roll and a few words from the company president. The grocery chain is now featuring fresh sustainable seafood as part of a partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council, one of the top certification and eco-frirendly labeling programs for sustainable seafood, and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, a nonprofit marine science center. Shaw’s said it is the first New England-based retailer with fresh product certified by the MSC.

Stores opening at Northborough Crossing
Jos. A. Bank, a men’s apparel retail chain, is opening a store today at Northborough Crossing, a new, $100 million shopping center and residential complex located at the intersection of routes 9 and 20. The shopping component of the project has been up and running for about a week. In recent days, Yankee Candle, T.J. Maxx, and Golf Town have opened stores there. A BJ’s Wholesale Club is scheduled to open tomorrow, and a giant Wegmans supermarket in mid-October.

BJ’s shareholders approve acquisition
BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. said today that its shareholders approved a $2.8 billion deal to take it private. In June, the warehouse club operator said private equity firms Leonard Green & Partners and CVC Capital Partners agreed to acquire it. About 72 percent of shareholders approved the deal, the company said. Holders of 0.4 percent of BJ’s stock voted against it. The deal is expected to close around Sept. 30.

Local billboards to commemorate 9/11
Clear Channel Outdoor-Boston said its digital billboards will observe a “digital moment of silence” Sunday morning to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Technically speaking, Clear Channel Outdoor-Boston’s digital moment of silence will last a bit more than hour, the time frame of the airliner crashes on the original 9/11. During that time, no commercial ads will be shown on its digital billboards, only the message, “Pause & Reflect.”
