Chao family donates $40 million to Harvard Business School

The Harvard Business School is significantly expanding its mission of training current business leaders with the addition of a second executive education center, funded by a $40 million gift from the family of former US Labor Secretary, Elaine L. Chao.

UNH unveils economic index for the lodging industry

The University of New Hampshire said Friday that it is launching a quarterly economic index that will help the lodging industry conduct short- and long-range planning. Titled the Lodging Executive Sentiment Index, or LESI, the index will be managed by UNH’s Department of Hospitality Management at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics. The index will be based on surveys of 20 lodging executives representing companies with more than 2.5 million hotel rooms across the United States.

WinnDevelopment marks the opening of Fitchburg Place

WinnDevelopment announced the official opening this week of Fitchburg Place, a senior housing development in Fitchburg with 96 one-bedroom rental apartments. All the apartments have been designated as affordable, mixed-income units, and they will benefit from operating and rental subsidies provided by the US Department of Housing & Urban Development, said WinnDevelopment, the real estate development arm of WinnCompanies. The property was formerly known as Groop Townview Towers, a public housing complex owned by the Fitchburg Housing Authority.

E Ink looks to bolster its position in LCD technology with licensing deal

E Ink Holdings of Taiwan, parent company of E Ink Corp. of Cambridge, is bolstering its position in liquid crystal display (LCD) technology through a 10-year patent licensing agreement with AU Optronics Corp. of Taiwan. E Ink makes the low-power black-and-white screens found on popular e-book readers like Amazon.com’s Kindle.

InVivo Therapeutics seeks to reassure shareholders

InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp., a company developing technologies for the treatment of spinal cord injuries and neurotrauma, made public a letter to its shareholders Friday that sought to reassure them about InVivo’s falling stock price in recent weeks. “We are disappointed with our recent stock price performance,” chief executive Frank Reynolds wrote in the letter. “The 50 percent decline since the end of August 2012 is unwarranted and seems to have been driven by unsubstantiated Internet rumors. We believe our stock is undervalued and has significant near-term catalysts that should drive valuation.”

TD Bank data breach affects 35,000 in Maine

LEWISTON, Maine — TD Bank has told the Maine Attorney General’s Office that the personal information of nearly 35,000 Maine residents, including Social Security and bank account numbers, may have been compromised by the loss of bank data in March. The number was disclosed in a letter from the bank to the state dated Oct. 5 and obtained by the Sun Journal on Thursday. The Nashua Telegraph reports that an unspecified number of New Hampshire customers also are affected.

Staples: It’s not too soon to think about getting ready for Christmas

Framingham-based Staples Inc. is already talking up its holiday center --- holiday as in Christmas. The office-supply giant cited a social media poll that found that many companies like to get a start on their holiday planning well before Thanksgiving. “Small businesses now have a place where they can go to get an early start on holiday preparations,” Steve Bussberg, a Staples senior vice president, said in a statement.

Auctioneer set to sell of pieces of Curt Schilling’s failed video game company

You could soon have a chance to buy a piece of Curt Schilling’s failed Providence video game company. SJ Corio Co., the company auctioning off computers and other tangible goods for 38 Studios LLC, said Thursday it will let online bidders participate in the upcoming auctions this month. The auctions are scheduled to be held at 38 Studios’s former offices at 1954 Greenspring Dr. in Timonium, Md., at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16 and One Empire St. in Providence at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 23.

Pop chanteuse Taylor Swift will pitch Keds

Keds, the lifestyle sneaker brand based in Lexington, said it has signed a multi-year deal with popular singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Keds has evolved to the point where its cachet seems to be most appreciated by girls and young women, and many of them are likely to be fans of Swift’s. According to Keds, Swift “embodies the Keds spirit, style, and sensibility.”

MIT creates new center on wireless tech

The billions of phones, tablets and other gadgets that connect to 3G and 4G cellular data networks aren’t as sophisticated as they look. They’re actually quite primitive, with electronics that consume too much power, software that’s vulnerable to infiltration, and radios that waste valuable bandwidth.

Attivio collects $34 million in new funding to help companies figure out what they know

Attivio, a Newton-based software company, said it has raised $34 million in growth capital. The funding round was led by Oak Investment Partners. Attivio’s software is used by large financial institutions as well as by customers faced with information management challenges across life sciences, government, military, law enforcement, telecommunications, and e-business.
