Nov. 16, 2011 TripAdvisor partnerships will double its number of vacation rental property listings The Newton-based travel site TripAdvisor has partnered with four international vacation rental websites to double its number of vacation rental property listings, the company announced today. The partnership -- with Interhome, based in Switzerland; Stayz, of Australia; Toprural, in Spain; and AKENA Technologies, of France – boosts the site’s international listings to more than 200,000. Patrick to lead trade mission to Chile, Brazil Governor Deval Patrick is leading a trade mission to Chile and Brazil next month to promote economic development partnerships between Massachusetts and the South American nations. The state delegation that includes business and academic leaders as well as government officials is scheduled to visit Chile on Dec. 1-2 to advance partnership opportunities in the innovation economy. A larger delegation is scheduled to visit Brazil from Dec. 4-9 with stops in Brasilia, Sao Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro for visits to companies, universities, and government agencies. Accenture survey: Will Black Friday lose a bit of its luster this year? Fewer consumers are expected to shop on Black Friday this year, according to a survey from Accenture, a management consulting and outsourcing company. One reason is that a tough economy has penny-pinching consumers focusing on discounts, and the belief is that retailers won’t offer their best discounts until just before Christmas. One survey finding: 46 percent of respondents plan to cut holiday spending because of rising food prices. Rosengren defends Fed, says more can be done to lower unemployment In the face of criticism by Republican presidential candidates, and Occupy Boston protests at the front door, Boston Federal Reserve Bank president Eric S. Rosengren defended the actions of the Federal Reserve since the financial crisis and said the central bank can take additional steps to help the nation’s economy. Rosengren told the Boston Economic Club that additional measures to lower interest rates could spur car and home purchases and foreign trade, but are not likely to increase inflation. Local Kohl’s stores will open at 1 a.m. on Black Friday The Kohl’s department-store chain said that its stores in the Boston area will now open at 1 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Retailers have been been scrambling to adjust their plans because of the Massachusetts blue laws, which prohibit employees from working before midnight on Thanksgiving Day. Some national chains had originally planned to open at midnight but have opted to change their plans for their stores located in Massachusetts. Casino company agrees to buy land in Springfield Ameristar Casinos Inc., a company that notes that the newest and most popular slot machines are a “hallmark” of its brand, has agreed to purchase 41 acres of land in Springfield for $16 million in anticipation of casino gaming being legalized in Massachusetts --- something that could happen imminently. Ameristar’s plan is to apply for the for the sole casino license for Western Massachusetts. If successful, it would look to build a luxury hotel and entertainment resort. Raytheon receives pair of military contracts Raytheon Co. said today that it received a $24 million contract from the US Air Force for Paveway II laser-guided bomb components. The contract, which was competitively awarded, represents the majority of the Air Force’s laser-guided bomb buy for overseas contingency operations, the defense contractor said. Raytheon’s Paveway systems are designed to upgrade bombs into precision-guided weapons using laser and global-positioning guidance systems. Dunkin’ Donuts to sell Keurig coffee makers Single-serve coffee makers are hot, and Dunkin’ Donuts said participating stores in the chain will sell Keurig single-serve coffee makers through the end of the year, partly as a way to make it easy for customers to buy a Keurig Elite Brewing System as a possible holiday gift. Earlier this year, Dunkin’ Donuts began selling coffee in K-Cups, packets that are designed to be used in a Keurig single-serve coffee maker. The Keurig machine brews coffee one cup at a time. Allena Pharmaceuticals launches with $15m Allena Pharmaceuticals Inc. is launching as a Newton start-up after securing $15 million in Series A venture capital financing. The company is looking to develop and commercialize non-systemic protein therapeutics to treat metabolic and orphan diseases, with a focus on nephrologic and urologic conditions. The company’s founders are Alexey Margolin, founder and former chief executive of Alnara Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Robert Gallotto, former chief business officer of Alnara. Best Buy decides against midnight Black Friday openings in Massachusetts Best Buy is the latest national retailer to change its mind about 12 a.m. openings in Massachusetts onthe day after Thanksgiving because of the state’s blue laws. Harvard said to seek sale of $1.5b in private equity Harvard University, the world’s richest college, is seeking to sell about $1.5 billion of holdings in private-equity funds as it further cuts investments that contributed to record losses three years ago. Harvard Management Co., which oversees the school’s $32 billion endowment, plans to offer about $1 billion of stakes in predominantly US buyout funds through UBS AG, and is already taking bids on about $500 million in energy investments through Cogent Partners, according to three people briefed on the deal, who declined to identified because the information is private. |
