Arbella taps Bruins star Thomas
The Arbella Insurance Group announced a multi-year partnership with Tim Thomas that will have the Bruins star goalie representing Arbella, beginning in January. It is the first time that Arbella has hired an athlete to do endorsements. Quincy-based Arbella is a regional property and casualty insurance company. Arbella also announced that its foundation is making a $20,000 gift to the Tim Thomas Foundation, which will target a variety of local causes.

Developer Arthur Winn pleads guilty in Columbus Center donation scheme
Real estate developer Arthur Winn pleaded guilty today in US District Court in Boston to making illegal campaign contributions as part of an effort to obtain public funding for his ultimately failed Columbus Center project. The 72-year-old Winn spoke in a low husky voice throughout the 20-minute proceeding, uttering the word “guilty” when asked if he made the $61,000 in illegal contributions described in court by Assistant US Attorney James Dowden. Winn faces a fine of $200,000 and prison sentence of up to six months, according to the guidelines agreed upon by his attorney and the government.

State-of-the-art Stop & Shop is gearing up for Chelmsford debut
Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. is gearing up for next week’s grand opening of a new state-of-the-art store in Chelmsford that includes such firsts for the chain as an in-store nutritionist and a Tree House, an area where Stop & Shop minds the children so their parents can go grocery shopping. Also new: Curbside pick-up. Customers can order online, then pick up what they ordered without leaving their cars.

Hancock president blasts Washington gridlock
The head of Boston insurance giant John Hancock Financial Services blasted political leaders in Washington this morning for battling one another, instead of working together to slash the nation’s deficit and finding ways to get the ailing US economy moving again. ”We need to tell the folks in Washington to put politics aside and fix the economic fundamentals,” said Jim Boyle, president of John Hancock, the main US arm Manulife Financial Corp.

Black Duck Software signs lease to relocate to Burlington
Black Duck Software, which helps companies manage the use of open-source software, has signed a new lease to relocate its offices from Waltham to much larger space at New England Executive Park in Burlington, said a broker involved in the transaction. The broker is Colliers International, and it represented the park’s landlord, Equity Office, in the lease negotiations. T3 Advisors represented Black Duck. Black Duck plans to make its move in December.

StrataDx taps Noland as CEO
StrataDx, a Lexington company focused on anatomic pathology, has named Pat Noland as its chief executive. Noland joins StrataDx after 17 years at Laboratory Corporation of America. Noland was most recently senior vice president responsible for developing and implementing LabCorp’s hospital strategy. StrataDx is looking to broaden its testing menu to include the latest in molecular pathology, a job that the company thinks that Noland is well suited for.

TA Associates completes investment in Senior Whole Health
TA Associates, a private equity firm with offices in Boston, has completed an investment in Senior Whole Health, a health plan provider headquartered in Cambridge. Terms of the investment were not disclosed. Senior Whole Health focuses on a group of health care consumers known as “dual eligibles,” individuals who qualify for Medicare – those aged 65 or over – and Medicaid – based on financial need.

buybuy Baby opens first Mass. Store
New York-based superstore buybuy Baby opened its first Massachusetts location last week. The 33,000 square foot store is located at 160 Granite St. in Braintree, replacing the empty Linens ‘n Things store. The subsidiary of Bed Bath & Beyond offers merchandise for newborns to toddlers, including learning and development products, clothing, strollers, and furniture. The baby-only store concept is a popular approach for new stores at a time when people are carefully spending money.

Zuckerberg says Boston may be in Facebook’s future

Mass. gas prices down a penny a gallon
Gasoline prices in Massachusetts have fallen another penny per gallon this week and are at levels not seen locally since early March, AAA Southern New England said. AAA’s Nov. 7 survey of prices in Massachusetts found gas averaging $3.399 per gallon, down 1 cent from the previous week’s average. The current national average is $3.40 a gallon. A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $2.82.

Best Buy to acquire mindSHIFT for $167m
Best Buy, the big Minnesota-based retail chain, said it has agreed to buy mindSHIFT Technologies Inc. for $167 million. With offices in Boston and roughly 500 employees, mindSHIFT provides cloud services and data center services to small and mid-sized businesses. Best Buy said the transaction will help accelerate Best Buy’s growth in the small and mid-sized business IT services category.
