Start-up formed by ex-SolidWorks execs raises $9m for developing product design software for the cloud-computing era

Veterans from SolidWorks, a local firm specializing in 3-D modeling software, have raised $9 million for a start-up that looks to develop a fresh take on product design in the era of cloud computing. The place-holder name for the new venture is Belmont Technology Inc. North Bridge Venture Partners and Commonwealth Capital invested in the new firm. (SolidWorks was sold several years ago to Dassault Systèmes, a French company focused on computer-aided design.)

Dynamics Research Corp. wins $19.3m in contracts to advance brain injury treatments

Dynamics Research Corp., an Andover-based firm that provides consulting and technology services to federal and state governments, said it has been awarded a total of $19.3 million in contracts to advance psychological health and traumatic brain injury treatment for the Military Health System’s Defense Centers of Excellence. The mission of the centers is to improve the lives of the country’s service members, families, and veterans by advancing excellence in psychological health and traumatic brain injury prevention and care across the Military Health System.

Bain Capital partner Jonathan Lavine to receive Anti-Defamation League community service award

The Anti-Defamation League of New England plans to honor Bain Capital partner and philanthropist Jonathan Lavine with its 2012 Distinguished Community Service Award at a dinner event Wednesday night. Lavine is managing partner and investment chief at Bain’s Sankaty Advisors, a debt investment group he founded in 1997 and which oversees $19 billion.

Home energy firm Next Step Living raises $18.2m to expand beyond Massachusetts

Next Step Living Inc., a Boston company specializing in analyzing homes and making them more energy efficient, said it has raised $18.2 million in Series C financing as it looks to expand beyond Massachusetts. New investor VantagePoint Capital Partners led the round. Existing investors, including Black Coral Capital and Mass Green Energy Fund, also participated in the round, which remains open. Next Step Living said it is eyeing expansion in Connecticut, Maryland, and other states on the Atlantic Coast.

Athenahealth to buy Arsenal on the Charles campus from Harvard for $168.5 million

Athenahealth Inc., which provides electronic record and billing systems to hospitals and other medical industry clients, has agreed to buy the Arsenal on the Charles office campus in Watertown, the company said Wednesday. Athenahealth will pay $168.5 million to acquire the 29-acre parcel from Harvard University, which is expanding in nearby Allston. The campus already serves as Athenahealth’s headquarters, but executives said buying the property will allow them to expand the business in coming years.

Anika Therapeutics slumps on FDA Monovisc ruling

BEDFORD — Shares of Anika Therapeutics Inc. skidded lower Wednesday after the company said the Food and Drug Administration upheld its decision against approving the company’s osteoarthritis treatment Monovisc. The company said it will schedule a meeting with the FDA to determine its next steps. Monovisc is designed to treat pain in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee.

Policy paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston examines financial panics

The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has issued a policy paper that’s a deep dive on financial panics -- from the psychological perspective. The paper looks not just at standard economic explanations for panics like the one in 2008 but at the human traits that may drive them. To understand, writers Anat Bracha and Elke U. Weber suggest exploring “animal spirits,” an expression used by John Maynard Keynes in a 1936 book to describe the human emotions that he saw linked to consumer confidence.

“Top of the WorlDD” is the latest contest for Dunkin’ Donuts, and the person who submits the best photo or video wishing loved ones a happy holiday will get to see their art work up in lights --- in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, no less, as thousands of revelers throng the area below. Dunkin’ has had a long-time billboard presence in Times Square. The winners of the “Top of the WorlDD” contest will have eir art work exhibited as part of the Big Apple skyline on Dunkin’s Time Square billboard on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

BAE Systems gets contract for missile-defense system components made in Nashua

Global defense contractor BAE Systems said Wednesday that it has received initial contract funding of $81 million from Lockheed Martin Corp. to begin production of 143 infrared seekers for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense weapon-system program. The system, also known as THAAD, is designed to defend US and allied soldiers, military assets, and metropolitan areas from ballistic missile attack threats. The infrared seekers are made at BAE Systems’ facility in Nashua, N.H.

First Trade Union Bank partners with LevelUp to create mobile wallet

Boston’s First Trade Union Bank will soon become one of the few banks to offer its customers a mobile app for making purchases with smartphones. The small community bank will launch the app early next year through a partnership with Scvngr Inc., a Boston start-up that operates the LevelUp mobile payments platform. The bank’s app will let its customers use their iPhone or Android phone to pay at any of the 4,000 merchants nationwide that are on LevelUp’s network.

Zipcar discloses its new Innovation District address --- 35 Thomson Place

Zipcar Inc., the Cambridge-based vehicle sharing service that rents cars by the hour, disclosed more details Wednesday on its plans to relocate from Cambridge to the Innovation District in Boston. Zipcar made public its plans last summer but did not announce its new address. In a Wednesday press release, Zipcar said it will move to 35 Thomson Place and occupy all six floors of the 46,000 square foot building. More than 200 employees will make the move sometime next year.
