Aug. 21, 2012 Zipcar to expand its Zipvan cargo van service across North AmericaZipcar Inc., the Cambridge-based vehicle-sharing service, announced plans Tuesday to expand its Zipvan cargo service across its North American markets. Zipvan started in London and now accounts for more than 10 percent of Zipcar’s UK operations. Zipcar has already tested the concept in the Boston market, and now the company says it is launching the service in Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Portland, Ore. Plans call for the service to roll out to Zipcar’s remaining metro markets in North America over the next 12 months. | | ||
World Energy Solutions hires 100th employee, moves to larger quartersWorld Energy Solutions Inc., a Worcester-based company that offers energy management services, officially marked its move to larger quarters and the hiring of its 100th employee at a ceremony Monday. A year ago, the company had just under 60 employees. World Energy Solutions now occupies about 12,000 square feet of space on the 20th floor of 100 Front St. Previously, it occupied 7,500 square feet of space that was spread across two floors at 446 Main St. | |||
Care.com acquires Breedlove & AssociatesCare.com Inc., a Waltham company that aims to connect families with caregivers, has acquired Breedlove & Associates, a Texas-based provider of comprehensive household payroll, tax, and compliance services. Terms were not disclosed. With 7 million users, Care.com offers online tools that list and sort providers of child care, senior care, pet care, housekeeping, tutoring, and other services. With the acquisition of Breedlove, Care.com will now also be able to provide families with payroll, tax, and compliance services for their caregivers and household employees. | |||
Poland Spring teams up with gymnast Aly RaismanPoland Spring, a New England natural spring water brand, said Tuesday that it is partnering with three-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman. Boston ranks 5th as Gen Y nirvana --- Seattle is topsBoston ranked fifth among US cities as the most hospitable areas for Gen Y workers --- that is, American workers between the ages of 18 to 29. So concludes a new survey from PayScale Inc. and Boston-based Millennial Branding. Seattle topped the survey, and San Francisco ranked 10th. In compiling the rankings, the survey examined such factors as median pay and commute times. The three top cities on the survey --- Seattle, Houston, and Minneapolis --- all had shorter commute times than Boston. | |||
Steward Health Care System signs letter of intent to acquire Mercy Health System of MainePushing forward with its plans to expand out of state, Steward Health Care System LLC, which has amassed a chain of 10 community hospitals in Massachusetts, has signed a letter of intent to buy Mercy Health System of Maine from a Catholic hospital group. The letter, which does not spell out financial terms, gives Boston-based Steward exclusive rights to negotiate with Mercy’s owner, Catholic Hospital East, a Pennsylvania-based network of 35 hospitals and other health facilities operating in 11 states from Maine to Florida. | |||
Logan TSA officers to undergo trainingTransportation Security Administration agents at Logan International Airport will undergo additional training following allegations of racial profiling during security checks intended to spot terrorists. TSA behavior detection officers and managers in Boston and at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, the two airports where enhanced behavior detection programs are in place, will attend a four-hour session intended to reinforce that racial profiling is unacceptable and an ineffective security tool. | |||
General Dynamics to buy Fidelis Security Systems of WalthamGeneral Dynamics Corp., a Virginia-based company that makes weapon systems and combat vehicles as well as information systems, said Monday that it has agreed to buy Fidelis Security Systems Inc. as a way to beef up its cyber security offerings. The value of the transaction is not being disclosed. Fidelis Security Systems employs about 70 people at locations in Waltham and Bethesda, Md. It specializes in helping its customers to prevent data breaches. | |||

Mass. officials announce anti-foreclosure grantsMore than $19 million in grants have been awarded to cities, towns, and organizations across Massachusetts to assist communities and homeowners in alleviating the impacts of the foreclosure crisis. State Attorney General Martha Coakley announced the awarding of ‘‘HomeCorps’’ program grant funding Monday morning. Two of the program’s grants will help fund statewide initiatives that provide direct assistance to borrowers. Mass. gas prices rise 6 cents a gallonThe average price for gas in Massachusetts was $3.739 a gallon in the latest weekly AAA survey, up 6 cents from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said Monday. Over the past month, local prices are up 17 cents a gallon. The current national average is $3.72 a gallon; a year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average was $3.64. | |||
