Thermo Fisher Scientific’s CEO collected total pay of $5.5 million in 2011

The top executive at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. collected total compensation of $5.5 million last year, nearly double his 2010 pay package, according to a filing Monday. Waltham-based Thermo Fisher said its president and chief executive, Marc N. Casper, was paid a salary of $1 million salary and a bonus of $1.3 million in 2011. He was also awarded stock options with an estimated market value of more than $3 million, and given other compensation totalling $152,517.

Mystery outage plagues Boston TV stations

Four Greater Boston TV stations are racing to repair a mysterious malfunction that knocked them off the air on Sunday.

National Grid provides $5.6m award to UMass Medical School in Worcester

National Grid, which delivers electricity to 3.3 million customers in New England and New York, has awarded $5.6 million to the University of Massachusetts Medical School for the expansion of the school’s power plant. National Grid said the award is the largest incentive of its kind ever given by the company in Massachusetts. The incentive is earmarked for a 7.5-megawatt, gas-fired combustion turbine that will boost the medical school’s capacity to generate electricity on its Worcester campus.

Steward Health Care to advertise on the Summer Olympics

Steward Health Care System LLC, the owner of 10 community hospitals and doctors groups across Eastern Massachusetts, plans to advertise during regional telecasts of the Summer Olympic Games. Steward will have “category exclusivity” under its deal with WHDH-TV, the

Facebook buying Instagram for $1B

Facebook says it will spend $1 billion to buy the photo-sharing software company Instagram. The deal comes days after the service began offering a version for Android phones. The payment will be in cash and Facebook stock. Facebook is expected to complete its initial public offering of stock next month.

Mass. gas prices rise 8 cents a gallon

The average price for gas in Massachusetts is $3.879 a gallon in the latest weekly AAA survey, up 8 cents from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said Monday. It is the fourth consecutive week of increases. The current national average price is $3.92 a gallon. A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $3.63 a gallon, AAA Southern New England said.

New Samuel Adams six-pack features beers from winners of its homebrew contest

Winning beers from the Samuel Adams homebrew contest are now available at select stores nationwide, said Boston Beer Co., which is best known for its Samuel Adams line-up of beers, stouts, and ales. In the latest annual competition, nearly 1,000 homebrewers vied for the honor of having their entry included in a Sam Adams “LongShot” six-pack. Over the competition’s 15-year history, several winners have “gone on to become professional brewers, turning their homebrewing hobby into a full-time career.”

IDC Energy Insights projects global spending on smart grids to reach $46.4b in 2015

Worldwide spending on smart grids is projected to reach $46.4 billion in 2015, said IDC Energy Insights, a Framingham-based consulting firm focused on the energy and utility industries. Power grids face a number of challenges as their operators look to integrate intermittent energy from wind turbines and solar arrays. Another challenge: How to capture and store energy when supply exceeds demand and then release that stored energy when it is needed. Addressing those challenges will drive significant investments.

Staples announces small business contest winners

A small business that customizes Facebook pages and another that provides alternative portable power solutions were among the winners of a small-business competition sponsored by Staples Inc., the Framingham-based office supplies giant. The contest was titled “Give Your Small Business the Push It Needs,” and five winners were awarded $50,000 in free advertising and cash. The contest evolved from a survey that found that many small business owners believe they could increase sales if they had more resources to advertise.

Federal judge approves multistate settlement agreement between 49 attorneys general and major US banks; $300m coming to Massachusetts

A federal judge has approved the $25 billion multistate mortgage loan settlement between 49 state attorneys general and five major lenders, one of the last steps before more than $300 million in mortgage relief will start flowing into Massachusetts. Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said Friday that the settlement -- and subsequent funding -- is key to helping troubled homewners and slowing the flood of foreclosures in the state.

St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center notifies patients of billing data breach in Charlestown incident

St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center said Friday it is notifying 6,831 patients that their billing information, including credit card numbers and security codes, may have been compromised when documents the hospital planned to shred were removed by a vendor from a building scheduled for demolition. The papers did not include personal medical information and so far, there have been no reports that any of the billing data contained in the documents has been misused, according to hospital officials.
