Mass. man accused of investor fraud
Massachusetts state securities regulators accuse a West Boylston man of exploiting ethnic connections to defraud three investors out of nearly $800,000 and using some of the money for gambling vacations to Connecticut, the French Riviera, and Monte Carlo. The administrative complaint issued today by Secretary of State William Galvin also alleges that Edward Kooyomjian sold unregistered securities and acted as an unregistered agent. It seeks a full accounting of securities sold, compensation, and a cease and desist order.

Talbots shares rise on Sycamore stake
Shares of clothing maker Talbots Inc. rose today after an investment group disclosed it had acquired a 9.9 percent stake in the company. Sycamore Partners LP and an investor group said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that they own nearly 7 million shares of the company. In the filing, Sycamore said the stock is “undervalued and is an attractive investment.”

Eastern Bank makes Facebook ad buy
Eastern Bank said it is making its first-ever ad buy on Facebook, the social networking service. The buy will support its “Grand Slam Sweepstakes,” a contest that starts today and runs through Sept. 2, Boston-based Eastern Bank said. Contest entrants have the ability to “share” the sweepstakes with friends on Facebook and Twitter. First prize? A VIP trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum over Columbus Day weekend.

Haemonetics profit slides 5 percent in fiscal 1Q
Haemonetics Corp. said today that net income slid 5 percent in its first fiscal quarter, dragged down by a product recall. The Braintree-based maker of blood collection and processing systems also lowered its earnings expectations for fiscal 2012. Company shares tumbled more than 11 percent, or $7.58, to $57.92 in afternoon trading.

Logan to beef up behavior-detection screening
The Transportation Security Administration will start testing a new layer of behavior-detection security screening tomorrow at Logan International Airport, the first airport in the nation to roll out the pilot program. Passengers will be asked a series of questions, and TSA officials will then gauge reactions. One possible question: “How long have you been in town?” If a passenger avoids eye contact and sweats heavily, that passenger could be pulled aside for additional screening such as a pat-down search.

A free scoop of Ben & Jerry’s is just a tweet away
Ben & Jerry’s, the righteous ice cream brand with Vermont roots, said it has dispatched one of its scoop trucks to the Boston area where it will give away free samples for most of the month. Where will the scoop truck go next? Ice cream lovers can tweet their suggestions.

Mass. gas prices rise a penny a gallon
The average price for gas in Massachusetts is $3.759 a gallon in the latest weekly survey from AAA, up a penny from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said today. It was the fourth straight week that the weekly average rose. The current national average for gas is $3.70 a gallon.

Progress Software is looking for a new CEO
Progress Software Corp., Bedford-based maker of business programs, said that company president and chief executive Richard D. Reidy will leave the company when a successor is named. An external search will be initiated immediately, the company said. The terms of Reidy’s departure were mutually agreed upon by Reidy and the Progress board of directors, the company said in a press release.

SeraCare is exploring ‘strategic alternatives’
SeraCare Life Sciences said it is exploring strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company. No timetable has been set for the process, Milford-based SeraCare said.

Belmont Savings to pay $7,500 settlement for data security flub
Belmont Savings Bank agreed to a $7,500 settlement with Attorney General Martha Coakley for a security mishap in May that could have exposed the names, bank accounts and social security numbers of more than 13,000 Massachusetts residents.

New England Patriots vet opens crepe restaurant
Former New England Patriots player Matt Chatham is celebrating the grand opening of his first fast-serve crepe restaurant, called SkyCrepers, at the Emerald Square Mall in North Attleboro next Thursday. The three-time Superbowl champion will be joined by his teammates and other past Patriots at the store from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 4th. Fans are encouraged to join the festivities and snack on free food samples, take part in cooking demos, and enter to win raffle prizes.
