TA Associates, a private equity firm with offices in Boston, said that Hong Kong-based SpeedCast Ltd. has completed a buyout of Elektrikom Satellite Services, a Dutch company that provides maritime satellite communications services. TA is the majority shareholder of SpeedCast, a provider of global network and satellite communications services. “The combination of Elektrikom and SpeedCast’s maritime business unit will form one of the top maritime satellite communications service providers in the world,” SpeedCast said. A record-high 29.3 million passengers traveled through Logan International Airport last year, a 1.4 percent increase over the previous high, set in 2011, the Massachusetts Port Authority reported Thursday. Massport, which runs Logan, celebrated the record in late December when it recognized a geologist from Maine as the 29 millionth traveler to pass through the airport last year. Juice aisle stalwart Ocean Spray said it is unveiling new cranberry and blueberry-based beverages that are designed to be sold in the supermarket’s chilled juice-and-beverage case. Ocean Spray, an agricultural cooperative whose headquarters campus straddles the Lakeville and Middleborough line, has long had a presence in supermarket aisles that display juices and juice-based beverages. Now Ocean Spray is looking to gain a foothold in the refrigerated beverage cases of grocery stores as well. Japan Airlines will resume daily service out of Boston on Friday on a Boeing 777, with departure times delayed by about six hours on certain days. The aircraft that normally serve the Boston-Tokyo route were part of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet grounded Wednesday by the Federal Aviation Administration after several battery fires, including one on the ground at Logan International Airport. The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in December, up from 6.6 percent in November, as the local economy added 7,500 jobs during the month, the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said Thursday. The current national unemployment rate is 7.8 percent. It was initially reported that the Massachusetts economy lost 1,100 jobs during November. In Thursday’s press release, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said that number had been revised, adding that Massachusetts lost 3,200 jobs in November. Home improvement projects should enjoy a “strong rebound” in 2013, the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University said Thursday. “Robust spending in the second half of 2012 suggests the remodeling recovery is already underway,” the Joint Center said. | | |
