MIT professor wins award celebrating women in computing

Nancy Lynch, a long-time Massachusetts Institute of Technology computer science professor, was named Tuesday the Athena Lecturer, an annual award for pioneering female researchers who work in computer science. Lynch, an MIT professor since 1981, is the seventh recipient of the award from the Association for Computing Machinery’s Council on Women in Computing. The prize comes with a $10,000 check from Google Inc., which has supported efforts to boost the number of women who work in computing.

Metabolix opens office in Europe

Metabolix Inc., a Cambridge biotechnology company that makes biodegradable plastics and chemicals, announced Wednesday the opening of its first office in Europe. The office is located in a life sciences park in Cologne, Germany, Metabolix said; the office marks the company’s first expansion outside of the United States. Metabolix neighbors in the Cologne park include Bayer HealthCare and Sanofi SA, the French drug maker that recently bought Genzyme Corp. of Cambridge.

How’s this for a print-out? A mini 3D replica of Fenway Park

Objet Ltd., a company specializing in 3D printing, has unveiled a 100th birthday present to Fenway Park: A 3D print-out of the famous ballpark. Objet, which has offices in Billerica, has everything from machinery that can help create visual effects for Hollywood movies such as “Iron Man” to printers that can be used to make rapid prototypes of new products.

KPMG survey: New tax could hit medical device companies hard

Executives in the medical device manufacturing industry predict that a new excise tax and the burden of its related compliance costs will hurt their companies’ bottom lines, according to a survey conducted by KPMG LLP, an audit, tax, and advisory firm. According to the survey of 190 financial executives from the medical device manufacturing industry, 40 percent of respondents said their companies are already contemplating actions such as price increases and cost reductions, including possible layoffs, as a way to stay competitive.

Shaw’s launches ‘From Deli to Dugout Sweepstakes’ on Red Sox Radio Network

Radio station operator Entercom Communications and Shaw’s Supermarkets are launching a “From Deli to Dugout Sweepstakes” promotion as part of the ongoing relationship between Shaw’s and Entercom’s WEEI Sports Radio and the Red Sox Radio Network. The sweepstakes will reward one customer each week for buying specific Dietz & Watson deli items with their Shaw’s Rewards Card. Prizes include an opportunity to watch batting practice on-field.

Fashion checks in to new Revere Hotel Boston Common

The new Revere Hotel Boston Common is putting on a high-flying fashion show Wednesday, celebrating its official opening with models descending down the façade of the 24-story hotel decked out in designer outfits.  The Revere, a $27 million reinvention of the Radisson formerly located on the Stuart Street site, is sending climbers from Boston Rock Gym down the west side of the building at 5:40 p.m. wearing hotel uniforms designed by Massachusetts College of Art and Design students and spring and summer looks from Ted Baker London.

Fewer expected at this year’s Boston BIO convention than last time it was held here

The president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization said Tuesday that he expects about 15,500 people to attend the trade group’s annual convention in Boston June 18-21, significantly fewer than the 22,500 who came in 2007, the last time the gathering was held here. But BIO president James C. Greenwood said that number could grow on the strength of an economic recovery that appears to be gaining momentum and a cluster of Massachusetts biotechnology companies deciding to send larger delegations.

LouisBoston plans small store for Mandarin Oriental Boston hotel

LouisBoston, a retailer of luxury fashions, is planning to open a small satellite store later this spring at the Mandarin Oriental Boston, a luxury hotel in the Back Bay. Maria Fei, LouisBoston’s vice president of operations, confirmed plans for opening a satellite store of about 200 square feet. Since 2010, LouisBoston has occupied a two-story, 20,000-square-foot building at Fan Pier on the Boston waterfront.

Edmunds.com: Most hybrid drivers in Boston don’t buy hybrids again

Only 38.4 percent of hybrid vehicle owners in Greater Boston opted to buy a hybrid again when they returned to the car market in 2011, said Edmunds.com Inc., a California company that seeks to be online resource for automotive information. The national rate of repeat hybrid buyers was 35 percent. Both locally and nationally, many consumers who had previously bought hybrids are concluding that fuel-economy improvements in conventional compact and midsize cars make those conventional cars a better value than pricey hybrids.

Tax reminder: Procrastinators have only a few more hours

Time’s almost up! As of noon Tuesday, procrastinators had another 12 hours to meet the midnight deadline for filing federal and state tax returns. Returns can be filed electronically at irs.gov/efile for federal taxes and mass.gov/dor for state taxes. Or they can be sent by mail, as long as they are postmarked by midnight. You can also ask for an extension through the websites or by mail, but if you owe taxes, you still must pay them by Tuesday midnight.

Richards Barry Joyce will be the leasing agent for SouthField Corporate Center

Commercial real estate firm Richards Barry Joyce & Partners has been tapped to be the exclusive leasing agent for the SouthField Corporate Center. The center is part of Southfield, a master-planned, mixed-use development located on the grounds of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Boston-based Richards Barry Joyce has been hired by developer LNR Property LLC to be the leasing agent for the commercial component of the project. Southfield has up to 1.7 million square feet of capacity for office, biomedical research, and research-and-development uses.
