National Donut Day is still over a week off, but already the pastry cooks and sinker sous-chefs at Dunkin’ Donuts are gearing up for this baked-goods bacchanal. National Donut Day falls on June 7 this year, and on that day, the Canton-based chain said that its participating restaurants “will offer guests a free donut of their choice (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage.” And that’s not all. The chain added that it is now unveiling Summer Fruit Donuts, which feature such flavors as Lemonade and Key Lime. Dunkin’ offered up this historical tidbit: “National Donut Day, celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.” Sun Life Financial Inc., which has US operations in Wellesley, said it has launched a marketing campaign titled “Wake Up” to highlight the group and voluntary employee benefits that the financial-services company offers. The campaign, created by ad agency Doremus New York, seeks to help people understand why employee benefits matter and to drive traffic to Sun Life’s website. According to Sun Life, the campaign is trying to raise awareness for the types of benefits that are available to protect a consumer’s family. Another campaign message: Sun Life can offer more than just basic insurance plans. “We want to change the benefits conversation, and ‘Wake Up’ is the campaign that will help us achieve this overarching mandate,” Sun Life executive Roberta Ruel said. Nuance Communications Inc., a Burlington technology company known for such voice-recognition software products as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, said Thursday that it has agreed to acquire the Tweddle Connect business from the Tweddle Group for about $80 million in cash. This acquisition accelerates and broadens Nuance’s participation in the large and rapidly growing market for cars equipped with voice-recognition technology, the company said. Tweddle Connect is an application and content service delivery platform for in-car infotainment systems, including the Toyota Entune and Lexus Enform App Suite. Nuance has a similar product called Dragon Drive that is available in such automotive brands as BMW, Chrysler, and Ford. “The combination of Nuance’s Dragon Drive and Tweddle Connect bridges the current gap between voice, on-board applications, and connected third-party applications and content,” Nuance said. In its relentless crusade to eradicate 5 o’clock shadow, unsightly stubble, and chin whiskers, Gillette has recruited a new pitchman --- Superman. The beloved comic book hero is due for another reincarnation, this time as the star of new movie titled “Man of Steel.” As the movie’s June 14 release date looms, Boston-based Gillette poses the question, “Just how does Superman shave?” As a tie-in with the movie, Gillette has unveiled a website called HowDoesHeShave.com, where fans can check out some theories “from an esteemed group of Superman enthusiasts—including director, actor, and comic book aficionado Kevin Smith; Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, hosts and executive producers of the television series entitled ‘MythBusters;’ beloved science guy Bill Nye, and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ actress and real-life neuroscientist Mayim Bialik,” Gillette said. Haru, located just one block away from the Boston Marathon finish line in the Back Bay, will be making a $20,664 donation to the One Fund to help victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. The sushi restaurant had pledged to donate all money collected from the sale of its Boston unCommon and Back Bay specialty sushi rolls to the fund. The Rogers Family Company of California said it has won a patent lawsuit filed by Keurig, which claimed that Rogers’ single serve coffee product --- OneCup --- infringed on patents that Keurig controls. “I am pleased to announce that the US District Court in Boston ruled that the Rogers Family Company’s OneCup products do not infringe any of the Keurig patents,” company president Jon B. Rogers said. “There is no longer any doubt about our ability to sell our OneCup products for use in Keurig brewers.” Keurig is a line of single-serve brewing machines and K-Cup coffee packs from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. of Vermont. Much of Keurig’s operations are in Massachusetts. A Keurig spokeswoman said the brand disagreed with the judge’s decision and is now considering whether to appeal. Cheapskate tourists might have been well advised to give Boston a good leaving-alone in recent months --- according to a new survey, the Hub was the most expensive hotel destination in the US this spring. The survey is from CheapHotels.org, and it looked at the time frame of March through May. The spring rankings were based on the average rate for the cheapest available double room. Hotels had to carry a minimum three-star rating to be included. Only hotels that are located in or within one mile of the city center or the beach were considered. Boston clocked in at number one, with travelers having had to spend an average of $245 per night. Slightly behind was Santa Monica, Calif., with an average nightly price tag of $239 nightly. | | |
