FleetMatics Names Karen Leavitt as Chief Marketing Officer

FleetMatics, a provider of fleet management solutions for commercial vehicles, today announced the addition of Karen Leavitt as chief marketing officer. Reporting to FleetMatics CEO Jim Travers, Leavitt is responsible for all corporate branding, marketing, and communications activities.

Giants’ fans topping Patriots’ 4-to-1 in Super Bowl ticket buys

New York-area football fans are outpacing New Englanders in buying Super Bowl tickets on the secondary market. Twenty-three percent of tickets for the Feb. 5 game in Indianapolis sold on NFL Ticket Exchange have been purchased by people in either New York or New Jersey, according to data released by the website, the official ticket reseller of the National Football League.

Boston IVF pioneers world’s first needle-free saliva test used in infertility treatment

Boston IVF, a medical practice providing specialized infertility treatment, today said it has introduced the first needle-free saliva test that will replace daily blood tests needed to monitor infertility treatment. Following nearly two years of research, Boston IVF has proven that the hormone estradiol, traditionally measured in the blood, can also be accurately measured in saliva, virtually eliminating the need for daily blood testing during a patient’s treatment cycle.

Nevada casino developer purchases Springfield site

A Nevada company has completed the $16 million purchase of a former Westinghouse site in Springfield on which it hopes to build a resort casino. Ameristar Casinos announced the completion of the deal today. The 41-acre site just off Interstate 291 has been largely unused since 1970.

Patriots will beat Giants, unemployment data suggests

As the Super Bowl matchup between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants approaches, Patriot fans can bolster their confidence with one of the most accurate predictors for the past two decades: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment data. The team whose metropolitan area boasts the lower unemployment rate during the previous calendar year has won 17 of the past 20 Super Bowls. Based on this correlation, the New England Patriots should claim the NFL championship over the New York Giants.

Babson launches new advertising and marketing campaign

Babson College has launched a new advertising and marketing campaign designed to extend the definition of entrepreneurship, asserting, “The World Needs a New Definition of Entrepreneurship. It’s Being Written Here at Babson.” The keystone of the campaign is a digital hub that creates opportunities for the community at-large to participate in the “Redefining Entrepreneurship” effort by posting and sharing their definitions and accessing information about the entrepreneurial experience.

Young Americans recognize impact of innovation according to new survey

The 2012 Lemelson-MIT Invention Index, announced today, indicates that young Americans are acutely aware of the importance of invention and innovation in their personal lives, and within the context of the nation’s economy. Yet most feel there are factors that would prevent them from furthering education in or entering inventive fields, posing a threat to the pool of future U.S. innovators and the country’s economic prosperity.

United Technologies profit up nearly 11 percent

United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Connecticut, said today that its fourth-quarter profit rose nearly 11 percent, propelled by growth in its aerospace businesses. Total revenue increased 1 percent. The manufacturer of elevators, jet engines, heating and cooling equipment and other industrial products is banking on growth in commercial aerospace as Congress and the Obama administration plan to cut military spending.

Courier reports solid first quarter

Courier Corporation, a book manufacturer and specialty publisher based in North Chelmsford, today announced results for the quarter ended December 24, 2011, the first quarter of its 2012 fiscal year. Revenues for the quarter were $62.9 million, up 3% from last year’s first-quarter sales of $61.2 million. Net income for the quarter was $1.5 million compared to $1.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2011.

Mohegan Sun owners outline debt refinancing plan

The parent company of the Mohegan Sun casinos has announced a debt refinancing plan offering new terms to bond holders and reducing the loan amount. The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority announced late Tuesday it is seeking to reduce debt from $675 million to $475 million.

Vermont power provider, IBM to help smart grid

The company that runs much of the electric distribution system in the state is joining with IBM to build a fiber optic control system designed to make the electric system more efficient and reliable. IBM and the Vermont Electric Power Co. announced Tuesday that they had reached an agreement to build what they call an intelligent fiber optic communications and control network across the state.
