 | Thu. Dec. 08, 2011 Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture is coming to Natick Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture, a Norton-based chain of furniture stores, is planning to open two stores in Natick next month. The company has purchased two buildings at the former Lexington Furniture site – a 34,000 square foot building and a 5,000 square foot building. Plans call for the company to open a large Bernie & Phyl’s showroom along with an upscale “Metro Living” concept store in the smaller building. The Metro Living store will feature higher end contemporary leather and upholstery living-room furniture. Boston ad agency Arnold wins more Volvo business The automotive brand Volvo Cars has awarded more business to Boston ad agency Arnold Worldwide, Arnold said today. Arnold has been creating Volvo ads for the North American market for the past several years; now the agency will also develop campaigns for China and the United Kingdom and become the lead global creative agency for the Volvo brand. Billings for the new business were not disclosed. Volvo Cars’ China and UK markets were previously handled by SapientNitro, which retains the business in Australia. Timberland footwear line will feature OrthoLite insoles OrthoLite, an Amherst company specializing in high-performance foam insoles, said that its insoles will be incorporated into a footwear line from Timberland Co., the New Hampshire cobbler known for rugged boots. Beginning next spring, OrthoLite insoles will be incorporated into the Radler Camp Boat Moc, and in the fall, the traditional Radler Camp Moc will feature OrthoLite insoles. According to OrthoLite, its insoles feature such virtues as breathability, moisture control, anti-microbial properties, and long term cushioning. Dynasil wins $3.65m in government contracts Dynasil Corp. of America said it has been awarded $3.65 million in federal government contracts to support its ongoing research in developing technologies that can detect illicit nuclear materials. The contracts are from the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, or DNDO, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, Watertown-based Dynasil said. The company is beginning to commercialize specialized crystals designed to identify neutron and gamma rays, which are characteristic signatures of highly enriched uranium and weapons-grade plutonium. A Container Store will open at Northshore Mall in Peabody next summer A Container Store will open next summer in the Northshore Mall in Peabody, the mall’s operator, Simon Property Group, said. The Dallas-based Container Store chain features retail locations that sell storage and organization products. Its sales for fiscal year 2011 are projected to reach $650 million. The Container Store at Northshore Mall will occupy about 25,000 square feet of space. The space was previously occupied by a Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse. Former Boston College football star Mark Herzlich will act as a Saucony spokesperson Saucony, an athletic footwear and apparel brand headquartered in Lexington, said that former Boston College football star Mark Herzlich will act as a spokesperson for the brand and support its marketing message, “Find Your Strong.” Herzlich, who survived a rare bone cancer, is now a linebacker for the New York Giants pro football team. The “Find Your Strong” campaign seeks to inspire and engage consumers to “find their personal ‘strong’ through running.” Hold that iPhone: Boston ranks 12th in a mobile shopping survey, far behind Houston, New York, and Atlanta There are no shortage of smartphones and shoppers in Boston, yet the Hub ranked 12th on a list of top mobile shopping cities in the US. For the purpose of the rankings, mobile shopping is defined both as making purchases with a smartphone or a tablet and using a smartphone or a tablet to research products that are later purchased online or in brick-and-mortar retail locations. The survey is from the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Houston ranked first on the mobile shopping list. Tufts Medical Center and Blue Cross Blue Shield agree on a new contract Tufts Medical Center and its physicians have reached a new three-year agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the two sides said. Tufts and its doctors’ group said last month that they would stop doing business with Blue Cross on Jan. 17 because the two sides could not agree on a new contract. If no deal had been reached, tens of thousands of Blue Cross members would have been forced to change their hospital and doctors, and employers across Massachusetts would have had to consider switching to another insurer. Save more and spend less, Boston’s Fidelity Investments says A poll commissioned by Fidelity Investments finds that the top two financial New Year’s Resolutions are again likely to be: Save more and spend less. According to the poll, many US consumers are vowing to double their annual savings goal, with a median target of $2,400 for 2012 versus this year’s goal of $1,200. Headquartered in Boston, Fidelity is a financial services company whose offerings include consumer savings and investment products. Northeast Utilities sees NStar takeover closing delayed to 2012 Northeast Utilities said its $4.7 billion purchase of Boston-based power distributor NStar will close after Dec. 31 because of a regulatory delay in Massachusetts. Completion of the transaction is now expected in early 2012, not by the end of the year, Northeast Utilities said today in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources has asked the state’s utility regulator to require Northeast Utilities to quantify the costs and benefits of the takeover. Retail brokerage in Brazil taps Akamai Akamai Technologies Inc., a Cambridge company that helps corporate customers transmit digital content and manage their Web traffic, said that BanifInvest, a retail brokerage in Brazil, has been using some of Akamai’s services through Exceda, Akamai’s Brazilian distributor. Since turning to Akamai, BanifInvest has experienced a 40 percent improvement in site speed, Akamai said. |
