Naval air base State officials and members of the state’s congressional delegation say the Navy has reached a final agreement to sell the former Naval Air Station in South Weymouth for $25 million. US Senator John Kerry says the deal with the South Shore Tri-Town Development Corp. is expected to be formally signed on Tuesday. Negotiations over the future of the property have dragged on since it was closed by the Pentagon in 1995. Restaurant report: Pork’s got its mojo back An analysis of menus at national restaurant chains suggests that pork is becoming more popular. The report is from Technomic Inc., a Chicago consulting firm, and one finding is that pork has had a 7-percent increase in menu mentions over the past year. One possible explanation: Higher beef prices have frugal diners opting more for pork, the other white meat. Bacon seems to be especially popular. And pork, in its various forms, is more likely to be found as a component of a combo platter. AAA: Mass. gas prices hold steady The average price of a gallon of gas in Massachusetts was unchanged at $3.399 in the latest weekly AAA survey, AAA Southern New England said today. That was the same as the previous week’s average. The current national average price for gas is $3.41 a gallon; a year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price was $2.88 a gallon. AAA’s weekly surveys focus on self-serve, regular unleaded gas. F.W. Webb gears up for showroom opening in Boston F.W. Webb Co., a plumbing and heating distributor headquartered in Bedford, will open a new 50,000-square-foot wholesale-supply store and retail-bath showroom in Boston, its first within city limits. The store, near Interstate 93 at 307 Dorchester Ave., should be fully operational by the end of the year, said the company, which has renovated an old warehouse with a green redesign that limits its carbon footprint. Historic Bucksport inn sold A 230-year-old historic hotel in Bucksport that has hosted presidents and other famous figures could reopen as an assisted living facility. The Jed Prouty Inn that has been unused for nearly a decade has been sold to a Calais couple who already operate five senior living facilities in Maine. The sale price was not disclosed. John and Rhonda Chambers have been talking with Bucksport officials for some time about establishing a facility in town. Thermo Fisher approves $750m stock buyback WALTHAM -- Laboratory instrument maker Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. said its board of directors approved the repurchase of $750 million in stock. Its shares rose almost 3 percent in morning trading. The stock repurchase authorization will last until Nov. 9, 2012. Thermo Fisher said it has $25 million remaining on its previous stock buyback plan, which expires in February. The company had 378.3 million shares on the market as of Oct. 1. Sports Authority to replace Filene’s Basement in Arsenal Mall Sports Authority plans to open a 33,000-square-foot store in Watertown’s Arsenal Mall next spring and replace a Filene’s Basement that is scheduled to close at the end of the year, said the mall’s operator, Simon Property Group. A Colorado-based chain of roughly 460 stores, Sports Authority focuses on sporting apparel and athletic equipment. Just over a week ago, the parent of Filene’s Basement announced plans to shut down in January, a victim of fierce competition and a tough economy. Brooks Automation 4Q profit falls 50 percent CHELMSFORD -- Brooks Automation Inc., which supplies semiconductor manufacturers, said its fiscal fourth quarter profit fell 50 percent as revenue dropped compared with a strong quarter a year ago. The company said its net income fell to $12.1 million, or 19 cents per share, compared with $24.2 million, or 38 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 27 percent to $131 million from $181.6 million. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of 27 cents per share on revenue of $139.6 million. |
