Foreign travelers boost Cape and Island hostel stays
More than 5,600 guests stayed at lodging company Hostelling International New England’s five Cape and Islands hostels this season, a 6 percent increase over last year.

Lockheed wins bid to block Raytheon’s ‘Paveway’ bomb trademark
Lockheed Martin Corp., the world’s largest defense contractor, won a US agency ruling that prevents Raytheon Co. from obtaining a trademark on the name “Paveway” for laser-guided bombs. Paveway is a generic term, a board at the US Patent and Trademark Office said in a Sept. 27 decision that rejected Raytheon’s request. Both Lockheed and Waltham-based Raytheon make bombs with the name. Raytheon had sought exclusive rights to the name, Lockheed said.

Freddie Mac’s Haldeman to address BC Chief Executives’ Club of Boston
Charles E. “Ed” Haldeman Jr., chief executive of mortgage giant Freddie Mac, will be the keynote speaker at the Boston College’s Chief Executives’ Club of Boston lunch next Wednesdayl. Haldeman is well known locally. He is credited with stabilizing Putnam Investments after the Boston mutual funds company became enmeshed in a trading scandal. Two years ago, he agreed to run taxpayer-owned Freddie Mac, which faltered badly in 2008 when the US mortgage market collapsed.

Chocolatier debuts the Fudge Cubze
The Happy Chocolatier LLC is formally unveiling its Fudge Cubze product line. The Acton company describes this putative advance in chocolate food science as individual servings of fudge coated in chocolate that are each hand wrapped in foil with an inspirational message about happiness. Fudge Cubze flavor varieties include cappuccino, chocolate, chocolate mint, chocolate walnut, cookies & cream, cranberry walnut, peanut butter, and pumpkin spice, coated in either milk or dark chocolate.

Hill Holliday wins Oxfam America account
Boston ad agency Hill Holliday said has been selected as the agency of record for Oxfam America, a relief agency that targets hunger, poverty, and injustice. Billings are not being disclosed. Hill Holliday said it will create a campaign to raise awareness for Oxfam, an international organization, in the United States. The US has become an important market for Oxfam fund-raising, Hill Holliday noted. The first efforts of this campaign should launch in early 2012.

Vertex seeks approval for cystic fibrosis drug candidate
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. has submitted an application for a drug candidate that would treat cystic fibrosis. The drug is called Kalydeco, and Cambridge-based Vertex is asking the Food and Drug Administration to approve Kalydeco in a priority review. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects about 30,000 people in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide. Earlier this year, the company got FDA approval for Incivek, a hepatitis C drug that has the potential for blockbuster sales.

Sun Life survey: Retirement confidence drops sharply in 2011
Working Americans are losing confidence about how financially secure they will be in retirement, according to a new survey from Sun Life Financial Inc. Sun Life uses survey results to plot an annual “Unretirement Index,” and the latest reading shows that “retirement confidence” dropped nearly 20 percent in 2011, hitting a four-year low.

Mass court rules buyer of foreclosed home doesn’t own property
The state’s highest court added further turmoil to the housing market today when it ruled that buyers of foreclosed homes that were seized by lenders under questionable circumstance may not be the legal owners of those properties, and have few easy options to clear their titles.

Starbucks plans to introduce light roast coffees
Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee Co. announced the expansion of its coffee line-up to include two varieties of light coffee that will be available in January. The varieties are Blonde Veranda and Blonde Willow. Many coffee drinkers regard Starbucks as too strong and dark for their tastes. And indeed Starbucks consumer research finds that more than 40 percent of US coffee drinkers prefer a lighter roast coffee. Now Starbucks plans to court this niche of coffee drinkers with its lighter blends.

New Herb Chambers dealership will be his 50th
The Herb Chambers Cos. are gearing up for the grand opening of their 50th dealership --- a Hyundai franchise in Westborough. Herb Chambers Hyundai features 12 service bays and such amenities as a café, a client lounge, and a business center with free Wi-Fi access. Herb Chambers purchased his first car dealership in 1985 and has grown his company into the largest automobile dealership group in New England. The company operates dealerships throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Report: 64,000 in Mass. have ‘clean energy’ jobs
Massachusetts energy officials are pointing to what they say is significant job growth in the state’s renewable energy sector. A report released today by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center estimates there are now more than 64,000 people in the state working in the so-called “clean energy” economy -- or about 1.5 percent of all jobs in the state. The report identified 4,909 clean energy companies across the state.
