Gas prices in Massachusetts have dropped another two cents in the past week and are now down a nickel in the past month.

Massachusetts women earn 80.5 percent of what men do
Massachusetts women who were full-time wage and salary workers in 2010 had median weekly earnings of $832, or 80.5 percent of the $1,033 median for their male counterparts, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The women’s-to-men’s earnings ratio in Massachusetts for 2010 was at its highest point since 1997. The ratio for 2009 was 76.3 percent. The Massachusetts earnings ratio reached a low of 74.8 percent in 2007. Since then, it has trended upwards.

Appeals court overturns key Cape Wind clearance
A federal appeals court has rejected the Federal Aviation Administration’s ruling that the Cape Wind project’s turbines present “no hazard” to aviation, overturning a vital clearance for the nation’s first offshore wind farm. A decision today from the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia said the FAA didn’t adequately determine whether the planned 130 turbines, each 440 feet tall, would pose a danger to pilots flying by visual flight rules. The court ordered the “no hazard” determinations vacated and remanded back to the FAA.

Mass. Eye and Ear expands to Longwood area with new building on Huntington Ave.
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary broke ground on a new treatment facility at 800 Huntington Ave. in Mission hill, near the Longwood Medical Area. The $75 million complex is being built for the specialty hospital by the Beal Cos. and will house outpatient clinics and surgical facilities. The Beal Cos. is renovating and expanding an existing building on the property and will incorporate retail shops, a cafe and 150 garage parking spaces.

NH man convicted in mortgage fraud scheme
A New Hampshire man has been convicted of leading a scheme that defrauded lenders and homebuyers of more than $2 million in connection with mortgages loaned for the purchase of 26 multi-family properties in the Boston area, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said today. Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted Joshua Brown, 31, on such charges as larceny and making or publishing false or exaggerated statements. Brown is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 10.

Women in biosciences group launches Hub chapter
Women In Bio, a national nonprofit group that looks to provide educational, networking, and mentoring opportunities for women in the biotechnology industry, said that it is launching a Greater Boston chapter. Established in 2001, Women in Bio, or WIB, has existing chapters in such places as Washington, D.C.; Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, Seattle, and Chicago.

Consumer Reports ‘mystery fish’ story finds similar results to Globe’s investigation into seafood mislabeling
A new Consumer Reports story on “mystery fish” reaches similar conclusions to a five-month long investigation by The Globe that found that consumers regularly and unwittingly overpay for less valued fish or buy seafood that is not what it is advertised to be. A lab that conducted DNA tests on fish purchased by The Globe showed that 48 percent were sold with the wrong species name. The Consumer Reports story found that one-fifth of its samples were mislabeled.

Massachusetts women earn 80.5 percent of what men do

Venture that includes Gordon Brothers to sell Sharper Image assets for $65.6m
Iconix Brand Group Inc., which owns, licenses, and markets such brands as Joe Boxer, London Fog, Mossimo, Danskin, and Cannon, said it has agreed to buy the Sharper Image brand and intellectual property assets for $65.6 million. Iconix has agreed to buy the assets from a joint venture that includes Gordon Brothers Group, a Boston company that specializes in retail investments and restructuring. The joint venture also includes Hilco Consumer Capital and Bluestar Alliance.

TA Associates buys Nebraska IT company
TA Associates, a private equity firm with offices in Boston, said it has completed the acquisition of CoSentry, a Nebraska-based provider of outsourced IT infrastructure services. CoSentry serves as a one-source provider of data center, cloud computing, and managed technical services. TA partnered with CoSentry management to buy the company. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. Selling shareholders include McCarthy Capital, a private equity fund, and WaittCorp Investments, an investment company.

Disaster loan deadline nears in Mass., Conn., RI
Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island victims of the remnants of Hurricane Irene are running out of time to apply for federal disaster loans to replace lost property. The US Small Business Administration says homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofit organizations have a deadline of Nov. 25 to apply for low-interest loans. Authorities say anyone with insured losses should not wait for an insurance settlement before applying for a federal loan.

Comcast is expanding broadband services in Boston’s ‘Innovation District’
Mayor Thomas M. Menino said today that Comcast Corp. has begun to expand the availability of its advanced fiber network in a section of the South Boston waterfront that Menino has dubbed the Innovation District. The City of Boston is seeking to convince technology and biotechnology companies that they should relocate all or some of their operations to the Innovation District, and those types of businesses often require broadband services such as Comcast provides.

Mass. economic recovery continues to outpace nation’s
The state’s economic recovery continued to outpace the nation’s, though economists predicted shrinking global demand for the state’s technology products could hurt future growth, according to a new report by the University of Massachusetts. Massachusetts’ economy grew at an annual rate of 3.9 percent between July and September, up from 3.4 percent in the previous quarter. The US economy saw even better growth during the same period, nearly doubling its rate of growth from 1.3 to 2.5 percent growth during the same period.

Eastern Bank, MassDevelopment help Riverwalk Mill project in Lawrence
Eastern Bank, which recently opened a branch in Lawrence, has provided a $28.37 million financing package for Riverwalk Partners LLC, which is redeveloping the Riverwalk Mill complex in Lawrence. MassDevelopment, the state’s finance and development agency, added that it has provided a $6.5 million New Markets Tax Credit financing and $3 million leveraged loan to the project. NxStage Medical, a medical device company, has signed a lease to relocate its offices to the complex.

Dunkin’ promo could land you a free JetBlue ticket: Have joe, may travel
Dunkin’ Donuts and JetBue Airways are gearing up for their latest joint promo: Anyone spotted drinking Dunkin’ coffee in public tomorrow has a chance to win a free flight on JetBlue. Plans call for giving away 43 round-trip tickets. Why 43? That will will be the number of nonstop markets that JetBlue will serve out of Logan International Airport once it adds service to St. Thomas in mid December.

Russian firm invests in Bind, Selecta
Rusnano, a nanotechnology investment fund owned by the Russian government, is making major investments in two local life sciences companies --- Bind Biosciences of Cambridge and Selecta Biosciences Inc. of Watertown. Both companies now plan to establish subsidiaries in Russia. Robert Langer, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a founder of both Bind and Selecta. Bind and Selecta are each getting $47.25 million in funding from groups that include Rusnano, existing investors, and additional new investors.

Liberty Mutual unveils customizable annuity designed for boomers nearing or at retirement
Liberty Mutual, a Boston-based company known for home, auto, and business insurance, is looking to raise awareness for a new product it recently rolled out --- a highly customizable annuity that the company claims is ideal for baby boomers nearing or at retirement. The product is called the “Freedom Series Builder Annuity,” and options include a menu of features that offer extra safeguards and access to a customer’s money.

Raytheon profit falls 3 percent on lower sales; boosts 2011 outlook
Raytheon Co., the world’s largest missile maker, said third-quarter profit declined 3 percent after sales and profit at its Integrated Defense and Network systems units fell. It raised its full-year earnings forecast. Income excluding some items fell to $489 million from $504 million a year earlier, the Waltham-based company said. Earnings per share increased to $1.39 a share from $1.35 in the previous year. The average estimate of 20 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg was for profit of $1.33 a share. Sales fell 2.2 percent to $6.13 billion.

Freddie Mac’s Haldeman: New federal effort will ease, not solve, foreclosure crisis
The new federal effort to help troubled homeowners refinance their homes will help -- but come nowhere near solving -- the country’s current foreclosure crisis, the head of mortgage giant Freddie Mac said today. Charles E. “Ed” Haldeman Jr. said the Obama Administration’s plan to expand the so-called Home Affordable Refinance Program will improve the two-year-old program that hasn’t helped as many families as originally hoped. Haldeman spoke today to Boston College’s Chief Executives’ Club of Boston.

iRobot cuts 55 jobs, including 44 in Massachusetts
Bedford’s iRobot Corp. has laid off 8 percent of its work force, including 44 jobs in Massachusetts, because of anticipated cutbacks in government defense spending. All told, 55 employees were let go. The company makes home robots, which perform such household tasks as vacuum-cleaning. It also makes robots for military services and law enforcement agencies. Its Packbot robot can scout battlefields and perform bomb-disposal missions. Military and industrial robots currently account for about 40 percent of iRobot’s annual revenue.

Casino opponent blasts `cozy relationship’ between state officials and gaming industry
A prominent casino opponent sharply criticized the “cozy relationship” between state officials and the gaming industry following a report in The Globe today that Governor Deval Patrick’s top economic development aide bought stock in two Las Vegas gaming companies last year. Former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger, president of Citizens for a Stronger Massachusetts, said “the cozy relationship between our elected and appointed officials, casino bosses and their hired guns is deeply troubling.”

Galvin files lawsuit against Bank of New York Mellon
Secretary of State William F. Galvin today filed a civil lawsuit against Bank of New York Mellon Corp., alleging that the banking giant defrauded the Massachusetts state pension fund on foreign-exchange trading fees over a decade. The administrative complaint alleges that BNY Mellon “through its fraudulent scheme, effectively stole the millions from the Massachusetts state pensioners.” A bank spokesman responded, “This administrative action recycles baseless allegations.”

Biogen MS pill with $3b potential hits study goals
Biogen Idec Inc., the world’s largest maker of multiple sclerosis medicines, said its experimental MS pill BG-12 was safe and reduced the risk of patients relapsing in a late-stage clinical trial. The study evaluated BG-12 and Copaxone, an injected treatment from Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. It found Biogen’s pill reduced the annual rate of relapse by 44 percent when taken twice daily, and by 51 percent when taken three times a day compared with placebo, meeting the trial goals, the Weston-based company said today in a statement.

Downtown Crossing building is sold for $128m
The Downtown Crossing building at 350 Washington St. has been sold for $128 million, said a broker involved in the transaction. The building may be best known for such tenants as T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, H&M, and Town Sports International. Real Estate Capital Partners sold the building to Invesco Real Estate Advisors, said the broker involved in the transaction. The broker is the Boston office of CBRE’s National Retail Investment Group.

Patriots Ochocinco, star of Twitter and Facebook, signs endorsement deal
A sports nutrition company says New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco has signed a one-year endorsement deal that will help it strengthen its social media abilities. MusclePharm Corp. says the deal with Ochocinco will give the Denver-based company instant exposure to a massive audience. The firm says the colorful Ochocinco is the most popular NFL player on social media websites -- with nearly three million Twitter followers and almost two million Facebook fans.

Avaxia Biologics marks move to new office and lab space in Lexington
Avaxia Biologics Inc. has scheduled a ribbon cutting ceremony for later today to mark its move to new office and lab space in Lexington. The company is looking to develop oral antibody therapeutics that act locally within the gastrointestinal tract. Previously, its small team of five people worked out of their homes or from a small lab in Watertown subleased from one of its vendors. The new office in Lexington occupies about 8,000 square feet, and Avaxia Biologic’s current head count is 11 employees.

Global investor confidence rises
Global investor confidence posted a 96.7 reading in October, up from September’s revised reading of 90, said State Street Global Markets, the investment research and trading arm of State Street Corp. On a regional basis, North American investor confidence increased from 85.1 in September to 91.7 in October, State Street Global Markets added. Solid corporate balance sheets and the prospects for a resolution of the European debt crisis were cited as possible reasons for the increase in confidence.

Flora is OmniGuide’s new chief executive
OmniGuide Inc., a Cambridge company that has developed a laser scalpel for minimally invasive surgery, has appointed Scott Flora to be its president and chief executive. Flora most recently served as president of the surgical devices unit at Covidien PLC, a maker of surgical products and drugs with operations in Mansfield. Privately held OmniGuide makes medical devices from technology licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its BeamPath laser scalpel has been on the market for about four years.
