Netezza CEO Jim Baum Out at IBM, On to New “Non-Competitive” Venture
Former Netezza chief executive Jim Baum has left IBM, Xconomy has learned. Baum was the chief executive of Marlborough-based Netezza since early 2009 and oversaw the “big data” analytics company’s $1.7 billion acquisition by IBM almost exactly a year ago. Baum was not reachable for comment, but a spokesperson for IBM confirmed that he left the company a few weeks ago. Netezza’s website no longer lists Baum on its executive team page.

BJ’s Wholesale Club buyout completed
Private equity firms Leonard Green & Partners and CVC Capital Partners have completed their $2.8 billion acquisition of BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc., the Westborough-based warehouse club operator said today. BJ’s agreed to the buyout in June. It was considered an attractive target because membership-based warehouse club operators were among the businesses that performed well during the recession as consumers looked to stretch their dollars further. They have continued to perform well during the ongoing economic uncertainty plaguing the US.

BostonGlobe.com will continue to be free until mid-October
The Boston Globe said today it will extend the free trial period until mid-October for its new subscription-only website, BostonGlobe.com.  The plan was for BostonGlobe.com to start charging for its content tomorrow, but in a memo to employees this morning, publisher Christopher M. Mayer said that the Globe is taking extra time to make technical improvements. BostonGlobe.com launched earlier this month and was to be free to all readers until today.

Leaders back casino in N.H. town
A group of Salem officials and business leaders in Salem, N.H., are backing a casino in town. Several people who recently toured a Pennsylvania casino say it’s a safe bet a similar operation could prosper at Rockingham Park. They say it would create thousands of jobs and boost economic development. The group visited the Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Washington, Pa., last month. The Meadows is owned by Millennium Gaming.

TomTom will support traffic-jam scholarship
TomTom, the car-navigation device company with a presence in Concord, is launching an International Traffic Foundation, which will help scholars looking to devise ways to ease traffic jams and study gridlock. According to TomTom, its foundation will nurture talent in the field of traffic management, funding Ph.D. and post-doctorate research, publishing research papers, and hosting a number of traffic-related events.

Rattle lands BTS Asset Management account
Rattle said that it has been selected to be BTS Asset Management’s first agency of record after an ad agency review. Billings were not disclosed. Headquartered in Lexington, BTS Asset Management provides money management and risk management services to investors. Beverly-based Rattle has a client roster that includes Boston Harbor Cruises, Connecticut Science Center, the City of Salem, Mass., Kittery Shopping Outlets, Samuels & Associates, York Hospital, and Boston Main Streets Foundation.

Report: Friendly’s may file for bankruptcy
Friendly’s restaurant chain is considering a potential bankruptcy reorganization and sale, according to a published report. The Wall Street Journal reported today on its web site that Friendly Ice Cream Corp. , of Wilbraham, could seek Chapter 11 protection from creditors as early as next week, and could then try to sell itself through a bankruptcy auction. The Journal cited unnamed sources in its report.

Massachusetts economy showing `clear signs’of weakening
The Massachusetts economy, like the nation’s, is showing “clear signs of slowing,” and unemployment remains “troublingly high,” according to a leading group of local economists.

Acadian’s Franklin to become CEO
Acadian Asset Management LLC, a Boston-based money manager that uses quantitative techniques to invest, said Churchill G. Franklin will become chief executive officer on Jan. 1, 2013. Franklin has been with Acadian for 25 years, most recently as executive vice president overseeing client service, sales, marketing and technology, the company said today in a statement. He will replace Ronald D. Frashure, 68, who will become chairman as Gary L. Bergstrom retires from that role at the end of this year.

AMSC superconductor cable energized in Korea’s power grid
A second-generation superconductor wire made by American Superconductor Corp. has been switched on in Korea’s electricity grid. Devens-based American Superconductor, known as AMSC, said that this is the longest second-generation superconductor cable to be in use in a grid anywhere in the world. According to AMSC, its superconductor power cable systems can conduct up to 10 times the amount of power of conventional cables made with copper wire. 

Jordan’s: If the Bruins win the cup again, customers could win free furniture
Jordan’s Furniture unveiled a promotion that could have customers winning free furniture if the Boston Bruins repeat as Stanley Cup champions. The promotion, called “The Big Check,” is similar to those that Jordan’s has pegged to the fortunes of the Boston Red Sox. Under the Big Check promotion, sofas, sectionals, beds, dining room tables, rugs, or mattresses purchased starting tomorrow and until October 30 will be free if the Bruins win the championship this season.

Acadian’s Franklin to become CEO
Acadian Asset Management LLC, a Boston-based money manager that uses quantitative techniques to invest, said Churchill G. Franklin will become chief executive officer on Jan. 1, 2013. Franklin has been with Acadian for 25 years, most recently as executive vice president overseeing client service, sales, marketing and technology, the company said today in a statement. He will replace Ronald D. Frashure, 68, who will become chairman as Gary L. Bergstrom retires from that role at the end of this year.

AMSC superconductor cable energized in Korea’s power grid

Mass. foreclosures hit highest monthly level of 2011
Massachusetts foreclosures reached their highest monthly level so far this year, with 937 foreclosure deeds recorded in August, the Warren Group reported today. But that total was more than 22 percent lower than the total in August 2010. Many lenders delayed the foreclosure process after reports of sloppy practices. That delay may be over. And now the Warren Group sees the possibility that “a glut of foreclosed homes will be pushed through the pipeline in coming months and years.”

Second best city for seniors? Boston
Forget about Florida and the belief that old people crave the sun. A new survey finds that Minneapolis and Boston are the two best US cities for senior living, with Minneapolis tops. Pittsburgh and Cleveland also ranked high --- perhaps because senior citizens are as interested in support services and the cultural environment as they are in a day at the beach. So concludes a new “Best City for Seniors” survey, which was conducted for the Bankers Life and Casualty Company Center For a Secure Retirement.

$70m earmarked for Cambridge lab project in Kendall Square
Skanska USA Inc. said it is investing $70 million to develop a laboratory and office building at 150 Second St. in Kendall Square. Skanska USA, a development and construction company headquartered in New York, acquired the site’s 60,000 square foot parcel in November. It added that Elkus Manfredi Architects is now designing a three-story building that aims to meet the US Green Building Council’s LEED Gold standards. The building will house about 120,000 square feet of lab space.

Ocean Spray readies Craisins and chef Ming Tsai for Epcot exhibit
Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc., the cooperative of cranberry and grapefruit growers, said it will exhibit its Craisins brand of dried cranberries at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in Florida. The exhibit is scheduled to run through Nov. 13, and plans call for celebrity chef Ming Tsai to appear at the cranberry bog exhibit on Oct. 11. The exhibit aims to extol the versatility of the Craisin and how it should be regular ingredient in any serious cook’s repertoire.

iRobot gets $60m Army contract
Bedford’s iRobot Corp. said it has received a five-year, $60 million contract from the US Army’s Robotic Systems Joint Program Office. One company product is the PackBot, a robot that is designed to perform such military tasks as bomb disposal, reconnaissance, and other missions. Under the contract, the Army can procure robots, parts, and support services. IRobot said it has delivered more than 4,000 of this type of robot to military services and law enforcement agencies around the world.

Reebok to pay $25m in refunds to settle FTC charges of deceptive advertising on toning shoes
The Federal Trade Commission said today that Reebok International Ltd. has agreed to resolve charges that the company deceptively advertised “toning shoes.” According to the FTC, toning shoes claimed they would provide extra tone and strength to leg and buttock muscles. As part of the agreement, Reebok will pay $25 million.  The funds will be made available for consumer refunds either directly from the FTC or through a court-approved class action lawsuit. 

Amazon unveils $199 Kindle Fire Tablet, taking on Apple iPad
Amazon.com Inc., the world’s largest online retailer, unveiled its Kindle Fire tablet computer, taking aim at Apple Inc.’s bestselling iPad with a device that’s smaller and less than half the price.

MBTA testing plug-in hybrid Ram pickups
The MBTA this morning is taking delivery of 10 plug-in hybrid pickup trucks as part of a national test with Chrysler. Chrysler is loaning the prototype Ram 1500 PHEV, an electrified version of its full-size pickup, to the MBTA and eight other municipalities across the country, including San Francisco and Albany. A $48 million grant from the Department of Energy, sourced from the $787 billion stimulus package in 2009, is paying nearly half the tab for the 140 PHEV trucks in the test fleet. Chrysler is footing the other $49.4 million.

iRobot gets $60m Army contract
Bedford’s iRobot Corp. said it has received a five-year, $60 million contract from the US Army’s Robotic Systems Joint Program Office. One company product is the PackBot, a robot that is designed to perform such military tasks as bomb disposal, reconnaissance, and other missions. Under the contract, the Army can procure robots, parts, and support services. IRobot said it has delivered more than 4,000 of this type of robot to military services and law enforcement agencies around the world.

Reebok to pay $25m in refunds to settle FTC charges of deceptive advertising on toning shoes

Staples survey: Coffee is key to a contented workforce
Office supply giant Staples Inc. is mounting a Twitter campaign to raise awareness about a coffee survey it undertook earlier this year. According to the survey, an office kitchen well stocked with joe can result in a happier and a more productive workforce. The survey is from Staples Advantage, the company division that sells office supplies --- and industrial-strength batches of coffee --- to corporate customers. Staples is headquartered in Framingham.

Theracrine appoints new CEO
Theracrine Inc., a Cambridge biopharmaceutical company, announced the appointment of Steven Kelly as president and chief executive. Theracrine is focused on developing drugs that stop cancer from spreading. According to Theracrine, cancer spread is responsible for 90 percent of cancer-related deaths. The company was founded in 2010 by Flagship VentureLabs and cancer researchers.

MIT endowment reports 17.9 percent gain
The endowment for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology generated a market return of 17.9 percent during the fiscal year that ended June 30, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Investment Management Co. said today. The market value of the endowment at the end of the fiscal year was $9.9 billion. Last week, Harvard University reported that its endowment earned 21.4 percent on its investments for the year ended June 30, roughly in line with the financial performance of other large funds.

Restoration Hardware signs lease for old LouisBoston space near Newbury Street
Restoration Hardware, a California chain that sells luxury furniture and home decor, said it has signed a lease for the landmark building at 234 Berkeley St. in Boston, once home to the swank LouisBoston clothing store. The site is located between Boylston and Newbury streets. The building has a neoclassical façade and was designed in the French Academic style by architect William G. Preston. It was built in 1863, and it was the long-time home of the New England Museum of Natural History. Last year, LouisBoston relocated to the South Boston Waterfront.

Comcast survey: ‘Smart’ office buildings better at luring tenants
Forget gyms and cafeterias --- a Comcast survey of office building owners found that offering advanced communications services is a top selling point when it comes to attracting and retaining tenants. Tenants want “smart” office space that is technologically advanced and offers access to such services as Metro Ethernet and broadband Internet, the survey found. Only price, parking, and location ranked ahead of advanced communications services on a list of desirable office building features, the Comcast survey concluded.

Mass. home sales rise 15 percent
The number of Massachusetts single-family homes sold in August rose 15 percent from the same month a year ago, and condo sales also increased, the first time this year both property types posted an increase during the same month, the Warren Group reported this morning. But the Warren Group cautioned against over-reacting. For much of 2010, a federal tax credit was in effect that looked to give home buyers an incentive to jump into the market. That credit has since expired.

ikaSystems has a new chief executive
Southborough’s ikaSystems, which provides cloud-computing software that is designed to make health plans more efficient, is promoting company president Joseph Marabito to chief executive. He succeeds company founder Ravi Ika, who is becoming the executive chairman of the ikaSystems board. A 25-year veteran of the health care industry, Marabito joined ikaSystems earlier this year. According to Ika, the company is experiencing rapid growth, adding more than 100 new staffers this year.
