Lovebirds may tweet, but thoughtful Romeos don’t

Social media such as Twitter may be de rigueur for communications by college students, but one topic is probably best kept off-limits --- tweeting to your chums about the outcome of a hot date. So concludes a new Valentine’s Day survey of 1,200 students from Campus Entertainment, a marketing firm that specializes in targeting college students. “Students clearly prefer to talk about their dates outside of social media channels,” said Campus Entertainment, which has offices in Charlestown.

Ironwood prices stock offering

Ironwood Pharmaceuticals Inc., looking to prepare for the launch of a drug to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, announced the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 5.25 million shares of its Class A common stock at a price of $15.09 per share. All shares are being offered by Ironwood, and the gross proceeds are expected to be $79.2 million. The company intends to use some of the net proceeds to prepare for the potential market launch of a drug candidate called linaclotide.

Friendly’s CEO stepping down

Friendly’s Ice Cream chief executive Harsha V. Agadi is planning to step down tomorrow and the company’s chief marketing officer is also leaving in several weeks.

iRobot shares plunge on predicted losses from defense cuts

Shares of Bedford robot maker iRobot Corp. plunged more than 30 percent to close at $25.17 today, after the company warned of possible losses as decreases in US defense spending reduce demand for its line of military robots.

Celgene to invest $15m in Acetylon Pharmaceuticals

Acetylon Pharmaceuticals Inc., a Boston firm developing cancer treatments, announced a $15-million strategic equity investment from Celgene Corp., a New Jersey-based biopharmaceutical company. Under the deal, Celgene does not receive rights or options to Acetylon technology. Acetylon noted that its lead drug candidate has the potential to be combined with a Celegene drug to become an effective drug cocktail treatment for patients with myeloma.

Ex-Takeda executive committed insider trading, SEC claims

A former Takeda Pharmaceutical International Inc. executive was accused of using inside information to make more than $63,000 trading in call options, according a lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Brent Bankosky, a former director in Takeda’s business development group, used non-public information to trade in advance of Takeda’s announcement of transactions involving Cell Genesys Inc. and Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc., the SEC said in a civil complaint filed today in Manhattan federal court.

Attorneys general agree to $25 billion deal with major US lenders over foreclosures; Mass. to get more than $300 million in help

A multistate association of attorneys general, including Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, has agreed to a $25 billion settlement with five major US banks for their role in the country’s foreclosure crisis, it was announced today.

Ericsson sued by Airvana for $330m

Ericsson AB, the world’s largest maker of wireless networks, was sued for more than $330 million by Chelmsford-based Airvana Network Solutions Inc., which says Ericsson misappropriated intellectual property. Ericsson secretly developed a product based on Airvana trade secrets to operate wireless network equipment to avoid paying software licensing fees, Airvana said in a complaint filed in New York state Supreme Court.

Conn.: Public interest a must for NU-NStar deal

Connecticut regulators say they won’t approve Northeast Utilities’ proposed multibillion-dollar purchase of Massachusetts electric company NStar unless the companies show the deal would be in the “public interest.” The state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority issued a one-page decision reaffirming the “public interest” standard it has used in previous cases. Connecticut’s attorney general and consumer counsel had asked for the ruling. The authority announced last month that it will review the proposed $4.7 billion purchase, reversing a previous stance against getting involved.

Cubist plans to sue Hospira over its intent to sell generic version of Cubist’s drug

Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. this morning said it will file a patent infringement lawsuit against generic drug maker Hospira Inc. after being alerted that Hospira has asked regulators for permission to market a generic version of Cubist’s most important drug. Lexington-based Cubist said it received notice from Hospira, based in Lake Forest, Ill., that it has filed an abbreviated new drug application to sell its own version of daptomycin, which Cubist markets under the brand name Cubicin.

Ad agency Allen & Gerritsen will help promote exhibit at Los Angeles Zoo

Watertown ad agency Allen & Gerritsen said it has been selected by the Los Angeles Zoo to promote the zoo’s newest exhibit, called LAIR, as in “Living Amphibians, Insects, and Reptiles.” Plans call for the LAIR campaign to use Betty White and Slash (of Guns N’ Roses fame) as celebrity spokespeople. (Both are animal lovers with ties to the zoo, said Allen & Gerritsen.) The campaign will look to build and expand LAIR’s awareness through efforts that include TV, video, print, and out-of-home media.

Personal bankruptcy filings in Mass. fell 16 percent last year

Personal bankruptcy filings in Massachusetts fell 16 percent in 2011 when compared with 2010, the Warren Group reported today. Last year, there were 14,716 Chapter 7 bankruptcies filed in the Bay State, down from 17,496 filed in 2010, said the Warren Group, a Boston firm that tracks bankruptcy and real estate activity Chapter 7 of the US bankruptcy code is the most common option for individuals seeking debt relief, and accounted for almost 75 percent of Massachusetts’ bankruptcy filings last year.

FED releases report finding underwater homeowners don’t greatly impact jobless rate

Falling home values have kept some troubled homeowners from moving to another state for work -- but not enough to make a major impact on the national jobless rate. That’s the conclusion of a new report by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, which looked at the impact of the housing market on jobs. The report, produced by the bank’s New England Public Policy Center, examined homeowners whose properties were “underwater,” or when their mortgage was larger than the value of the home.

Yellow bootmaker shares tips on how to ‘green your love life’

Timberland, an apparel-and-footwear brand that courts eco-friendly consumers with a love of the outdoors, has come up with a Valentine’s Day guide for how to “green your love life.” The guide is based on a consumer survey. And according to the survey, women like men who recycle and take steps to keep their carbon footprints small. And for goodness sake, don’t deny global warning. That could be a first-date deal-breaker.

Dunkin’ Brands returns to a profit in the 4Q

Dunkin’ Brands, which owns Dunkin’ Donuts and the Baskin-Robbins ice cream chain, returned to profitability in its fiscal fourth quarter as traffic at its Dunkin’ Donuts stores improved and customers spent more. Dunkin’ Donuts stores in the US got a lift from strong beverage sales, limited-time breakfast sandwich offerings, and sales of K-Cup portion packs, the company said. The Canton company reported that net income of $11.6 million, or 10 cents per share, for the three months ended Dec. 31.

Fidelity: 401(k) balances little changed over 2011

Workers stashed money away in their 401(k) retirement plans at a faster clip last year but didn’t get an immediate reward for their savings strategy. Fidelity Investments, the nation’s biggest 401(k) administrator, says the average account balance was essentially unchanged in 2011, compared with 2010. The year-end average for participants in Boston-based Fidelity Investments plans was $69,100, down $300 from 2010, the company said.

Help wanted: Job openings in manufacturing second only to health care in 2011

The state’s manufacturing sector was hiring last year, with the number of job openings second only to health care, according a study released today by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute. Local manufacturers advertised nearly 73,000 jobs in 2011 -- but relatively few were production jobs. The vast majority of openings came in areas such as sales and customer services, computer and information technology, and managerial positions. The health care sector, meanwhile, posted just over 76,000 openings.

Cape Cod filmmaker is again denied lower bail

Daniel Adams, the Cape Cod filmmaker who is in jail awaiting trial on state tax fraud charges, was again denied a lower bail yesterday. Superior Court Judge Frances McIntyre rejected Adams’s request to lower his bail from $100,000. Adams’s lawyer argued that bail should be lowered to $5,000 because Adams is facing financial difficulties. Adams has been charged with bilking the state of $4.7 million in tax credits on two films he made on Cape Cod, “The Golden Boys” and “The Lightkeepers.”

Needham office building sold for $9.4m

An affiliate of Intrum Corp., a Newton-based boutique commercial real estate firm, has purchased a Needham office building for $9.4 million, said a broker involved in the transaction. The broker is the Boston office of CBRE/New England. With about 80,000 square feet of space and frontage on Route 128/Interstate 95, the building is located at 300 First Ave. CBRE/New England said it represented the seller in the transaction, 300 Realty Trust, and procured the buyer.

Boston Scientific launches artery-clearing device

Natick medical device maker Boston Scientific Corp. announced the US launch of a device designed to unclog hardened plaque from leg arteries. Equipped with a rotating diamond-coated tip, the new drill-like product is called the TruePath CTO Device. The plan is to use it to treat patients with peripheral artery disease, something that affects more than 30 million people worldwide. Using the TruePath device, medical professionals can penetrate through difficult artery blockages and help install catheters or stents, if needed.

Akamai buys Canadian firm

Akamai Technologies Inc., an Internet data delivery company based in Cambridge, said it has acquired Blaze Software Inc., a Canadian company with complementary technology, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition is expected to augment the speed at which Web pages can be delivered. At a time when more people are accessing the Internet through mobile devices such as smartphones, “new performance bottlenecks are emerging,” Akamai said. By combining Akamai and Blaze technologies, Akamai said it can widen such bottlenecks.

Shaw’s Supermarkets is cutting 60 jobs

Shaw’s Supermarkets confirmed that it is cutting about 60 jobs throughout New England as part of a larger workforce reduction by its corporate parent. Shaw’s said the cuts represent 0.3 percent of the West Bridgewater-based chain’s workforce of about 21,000 employees. The cuts do not affect store-level associates. Shaw’s also operates stores under the Star Market nameplate. The chain is made up of about 170 stores. Shaw’s is owned by Supervalu Inc. of Minnesota.

Fidelity: Participation up at workplace retirement savings plan for Children’s Hospital Boston

Fidelity Investments said employee participation in one of its workplace retirement savings plans jumped sharply at Children’s Hospital Boston. Headquartered in Boston, Fidelity is a financial services company whose investment products include workplace retirement savings plans. Last year, Children’s Hospital Boston consolidated its plan administration solely with Fidelity. At year’s end, 95 percent of Children’s Hospital Boston’s 9,400 eligible employees were participating in the plan, versus 37 percent a year earlier.

Jones Lang LaSalle secures financing for Framingham apartment complex

Jones Lang LaSalle, a professional services firm specializing in real estate, said it has secured $98 million in senior financing for Jefferson Hills, a Framingham apartment complex with 1,020 units. Greystar, a South Carolina-based apartment management company, purchased Jefferson Hills with a loan from Freddie Mac. Jefferson Hills consists of four, six-story apartment buildings. The complex is currently 95-percent leased.

At Staples, Martha Stewart unveils home office products

The Martha Stewart line of office products is ready at last. In September, Stewart disclosed plans to team up with Staples Inc. and Avery Dennison Corp. to lend her touch to a line of office products. That line has just been publicly unveiled. It includes more than 300 products in such categories as notebooks and vertical file folders. The line is sold exclusively at Staples.

MassMutual makes list of Top 50 Companies for Executive Women

MassMutual Financial Group of Springfield made a list of the “Top 50 Companies for Executive Women.” Drawn up by the National Association for Female Executives, the list looks at large companies that have at least 500 US employees. To merit consideration on the list, a company must have at least two women on its board of directors.

Bruins’ Seguin renews Dunkin’ deal

Tyler Seguin of the Boston Bruins has renewed his sponsorship with Dunkin’ Donuts through September, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked goods chain said today. Under the agreement, Seguin will appear in radio commercials that help promote such campaigns as “What Are You Drinkin’?” and “Caught Cold.” He will also be featured in Dunkin’ Donuts’ social media campaigns, conducting Facebook chats with fans, and promoting the local Boston-area Twitter handle.

Fidelity urges SEC not to change money market mutual fund rules

Fidelity Investments sent a report to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, urging regulators not to adopt new rules for money market mutual funds that would drive customers away. Boston-based Fidelity is the nation’s largest manager of money market funds, with $433 billion under management in 10.9 million accounts at the end of 2011. Fidelity said in its report that changes made in 2010 to keep money markets safer, in the wake of the financial crisis, were sufficient.

Caesars head to address Boston College’s CEO club

Gary W. Loveman, who heads casino giant Caesars Entertainment, is set to address the Boston College’s Chief Executives’ Club of Boston next week. Loveman will speak about “The Gambling Business: Fortune, Science, and the Public Debate” at an invitation-only lunch set for Feb. 14. The remarks promise to be timely. A state law legalizing casino gambling was signed by Governor Deval Patrick in November; the law authorizes up to three resort casinos, one each in Western Massachusetts, Greater Boston/Worcester, and the southeast.

AIM: Mass. business confidence rose in Jan.

A confidence index that tracks the mood of local employers posted a 1.8-point gain in January for a reading of 52.8, a sign that many of the state’s business leaders believe that the economy is undergoing a “slow and halting recovery.” The monthly index is maintained by the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, or AIM. The index uses a 100-point scale. A reading above 50 indicates a positive outlook, a reading below 50 a negative one.

iFood app is powered by Dragon speech technology

A new version of the iFood Assistant app from Kraft Foods is powered by Nuance Communications Inc.’s Dragon speech-recognition product, Burlington-based Nuance said today. A consumer using the iFood app with an iPhone or an iPod Touch can now use voice commands to create shopping lists, search for recipes, and draw up meal plans, Nuance said in a press release.

Report: China looks to biopharma

Greater Boston prides itself on being a biopharmaceutical hotbed, but a new report suggests that the Chinese are also keenly interested in the life sciences industry. The report is from Lux Research of Boston. One line from the report: “A clutch of promising Chinese companies ... underlines the emergence of the Asian giant as a center for biopharma innovation and entrepreneurship, even as Western pharmaceutical companies continue to enjoy technological and business advantages.”

BioMed Realty Trust agrees to buy Cambridge Place for $119m

BioMed Realty Trust Inc., a San Diego-based real estate investment trust that focuses on the life sciences industry, has agreed to buy Cambridge Place for $119 million. The transaction would expand BioMed’s real estate portfolio in the Greater Boston-Cambridge market to about 3.2 million square feet of space. Cambridge Place is made up of three buildings, and the property is 80-percent leased. Tenants include CDM Smith Inc., an engineering and construction firm, and Idenix Pharmaceuticals Inc., a biopharmaceutical company.

Massachusetts, California, and New York considering joining settlement with banks

Massachusetts, California and New York were considering Monday whether to join most other states in backing a long-awaited settlement with banks over foreclosure abuses. The deal would require the five largest mortgage lenders to reduce loans for about 1 million households. State attorneys general have set a deadline of the end of Monday for states to join the settlement. Homeowners in states that opt out of the deal wouldn’t share in the settlement money.

Appeals court ruling in Fidelity case: Whistleblower law doesn’t apply to mutual funds

A federal law that protects employees at public companies when they blow the whistle on alleged fraud does not apply to mutual funds, a US appeals court ruled Friday. The ruling, by the US Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit, overturned a Boston federal judge’s decision involving two former Fidelity Investments employees. The new ruling finds that employees of mutual fund companies are not protected under Sarbanes-Oxley, the law passed in the wake of the Enron scandal.

Congressmen Barney Frank, Michael Capuano, Stephen Lynch urge housing officials to help troubled homeowners

Three Massachusetts Congressmen are urging federal housing officials to help troubled homeowners avoid foreclosure -- adding pressure on mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to reverse a prohibition against reducing the size of struggling borrowers’ mortgage loans. The letter was released today by US Representatives Barney Frank of Newton; Michael Capuano of Somerville; and Stephen Lynch of South Boston, all Democrats. They are endorsing a request by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley who wrote to federal officials last week.

Hasbro 4Q net income down 1 percent

It was a blue Christmas for Hasbro. The No. 2 toy maker said that its fourth-quarter profit slipped 1 percent, pinched by softer-than-expected demand in the US and Canada and slow sales of games and puzzles during the key holiday season. The results contrasted with larger rival, Barbie-maker Mattel Inc., which last week reported better-than-expected results for the season. Toy makers can make up to half of their annual revenue during the holiday quarter.

Rockland Capital to buy Beacon Power’s power-storage plant in New York state

Beacon Power Corp., the Tyngsboro-based power-storage developer that filed for bankruptcy after winning a US loan guarantee, agreed to sell its only plant to Rockland Capital for $30.5 million in cash and a promissary note, plus additional obligations. Rockland will continue operating the 20-megawatt plant in Stephentown, N.Y. Beacon sought protection from creditors Oct. 30 after receiving a $43 million federal loan guarantee to build the world’s first commercial plant using spinning flywheels to retain energy.

Mass. gas prices rise 2 cents a gallon

The average price for gas in Massachusetts is $3.499 a gallon in the latest weekly survey from AAA, up 2 cents from the previous week’s average, AAA Southern New England said today. This was the seventh consecutive week of increases, and this week’s average is 12 cents higher than the average from a month ago. The current national average for gas is $3.48 a gallon, and a year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average was $3.11.

AMSC loses small skirmish in legal battle that seeks $1.2b

AMSC, a Devens company that makes control systems for wind turbines, said a Chinese court has dismissed a small lawsuit that is part of a much larger effort to recover more than $1.2 billion from a wind turbine maker for alleged technology theft. The case dismissed is seeking about $200,000 in damages, and AMSC plans to appeal. All told, AMSC has filed four cases in various Chinese legal venues that involve Sinovel Wind Group Co. Ltd., which was once its largest customer.

Zipcar to provide car sharing technology services for the City of Boston

Zipcar Inc., the Cambridge-based car sharing system, and the City of Boston said today that they are teaming up as they look to gain efficiencies and savings for the city’s vehicle fleet. Under a program called “FleetHub,” a number of city-owned vehicles will be equipped with Zipcar’s car sharing technology for use by city employees. Through the program, the city will be able to combine vehicles that were once dedicated to individual city departments and create an interdepartmental fleet that city employees can share.

A Super Bowl M&M’s ad that featured an M&M character called Ms. Brown scored high in at least two surveys that rated ads that aired during the Big Game. The M&M ad earned top marks in the Super Bowl advertising review conducted by the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. And the ad also did well in Brand Bowl 2012, a review led by a group that includes Boston ad agency Mullen and Boston.com.

MindChild files FDA application for fetal heart monitor

MindChild Medical Inc., a North Andover medical device company, said it has completed the filing of a Pre-Marketing Notification Application with the Food and Drug Administration for a non-invasive fetal heart monitor that it says is safer and more effective than products currently on the market. Last year, there were about 4.1 million births in the United States, and 85 percent of them required fetal monitoring during labor and delivery, the company noted.

Area sporting gear stores plan special hours to score customers in event of Patriots win

Area sporting goods stores are stocking up on New England Patriots T-shirts, hats and other gear, and scheduling special hours in anticipation of a Super Bowl win Sunday night. If the Patriots are victorious, officials from the Sports Authority, Dick’s, and Modell’s chains said, many of the chains’ locations in the region will open immediately after the games ends, and then open early the next morning. Demand for Patriots gear is expected to be high.

Times Co. seeks to divest rest of Fenway assets after stake sale

New York Times Co. is looking to divest the rest its stake in Fenway Sports Group, owner of the Boston Red Sox, after selling a third of the holding for $30 million. Times Co., based in New York, expects to make a pretax gain of $18 million on the sale, to multiple unidentified buyers, in the first quarter, according to a regulatory filing today. Times Co. is divesting sports assets while grappling with declining profit and publishing sales. The company owns The Boston Globe.

Employers paid out nearly $5m for labor law violations in 2011, AG Coakley says

The office of the Massachusetts attorney general said it recovered nearly $5 million in restitution and penalties from employers that violated state labor laws last year. The office’s Fair Labor Division recovered roughly $4.5 million in restitution for nearly 4,400 workers whose employers violated laws that cover such work-related issues as minimum wage, overtime pay, and tip pooling. The office added that it also assessed $500,000 in penalties against employers that violated such laws.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley is urging mortgage giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to do more to prevent “unnecessary foreclosures,” including by reducing loan principal for homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Coakley yesterday released a letter she sent to Edward DeMarco -- acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency that oversees the two semi-public lenders -- asking him to promote principal forgiveness as a way to mend the housing market/

Locals who are both Patriots fans and subscribers of Comcast’s Xfinity TV service can now surfeit themselves on the team’s past Super Bowl glories, thanks to a temporary feature incorporated into Comcast’s on-demand viewing option, the company said. The Super Bowl feature is titled “America’s Game.” By choosing “America’s Game” from Xfinity’s on-demand menu, subscribers can choose to see 45-minute documentaries on every Super Bowl game, with each video including 30 minutes of game footage.

Proposed Downtown Crossing tower could be up to 600 feet high

The development firm taking control of the former Filene’s property in downtown Boston said it will build a tower up to 600 feet high, rivaling the tallest buildings in the city’s Financial District. Speaking at a press conference today, principals of Millennium Partners said the tower will cost about $500 million and include a mix of uses, from offices to residences to new shops and restaurants along the street.

Washington Trust provides $20m to finance Tewksbury office park

Washington Trust said its Commercial Real Estate Group recently provided $20,000,000 for the refinancing of the Highwood Office Park in Tewksbury. With 278,000 square feet of space, the property is a three building office center with multiple tenants. The financing was provided to Highwood Investors, LLC, an affiliate of BPG Properties Ltd. BPG Properties is a private equity real estate fund manager.

Survey: Boston is the 8th most expensive city for watching the Super Bowl on TV

A survey of average monthly TV bills finds that Boston is the eighth most expensive city for watching the Super Bowl. The survey is from a Texas firm called WhiteFence.com, which cites its mission as helping households compare prices and save money on phone, Internet, television, electricity, natural gas, and other home services. Dallas is the most expensive cities for watching the Big Game, and Denver is one of the cheapest, the survey found.

SEC: Court enters judgment in stock options case against former Brooks Automation CEO

The US District Court in Boston entered a final judgment by consent against former Brooks Automation chief executive Robert J. Therrien, in a case alleging that he falsified records in order to enrich himself with stock options, the Securities and Exchange Commission said. Without admitting or denying the allegations in a 2007 complaint, Therrien agreed to pay $728,269 – the profits from his options deal – and a civil penalty of $100,000. Therrien also is barred from serving as an officer or director of a public company.

Morton’s The Steakhouse closes Back Bay location

Morton’s The Steakhouse shuttered its upscale Back Bay location yesterday on the same day a new owner took over the company. Tilman J. Fertitta, owner of Landry’s Inc., yesterday completed the acquisition of Morton’s Restaurant Group Inc., for about $116.6 million, and closed restaurants in other cities, including ones in Phoenix, Miami Beach, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Brooklyn, and Tysons Corner, Va., according to an employee at the Back Bay location who declined to provide her name.

Jordan’s Furniture is bringing back its Double Play Youth Baseball Program

Jordan’s Furniture, the local furniture store chain, said it is again gearing up its Double Play Youth Baseball Program, which aims to supply “gently-used” baseball and softball equipment to inner-city youth. In partnership with the Red Sox Foundation’s “Reviving Baseball to Inner Cities,” the program seeks to distribute gear to more than 2,000 young ball players, Jordan’s said. The program starts this week and runs through April 1.

New Balance proposes new HQ in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood

New Balance is proposing to build a new world headquarters in Brighton that will include new offices, a track and field facility, a hockey rink, and a boutique hotel. The developer of the complex, New Brighton Landing LLC, outlined its plans for a “health and wellness district” in a filing released by the City of Boston today. If approved, the complex will be constructed on a 14-acre tract near New Balance’s existing offices on Guest Street. New Balance markets athletic footwear and apparel.

After a nearly two-year campaign soliciting loyal skiers to buy shares at $3,000 a pop, Magic Mountain is finally a cooperatively owned ski area. The southern Vermont ski area has hit its goal of 300 shareholders, giving management access to the $900,000 raised during the campaign, which will go toward snowmaking and other infrastructure projects. Magic’s inability to cover trails with man-made snow has kept the small ski area from thriving, especially during dry winters like this one when skiers flock to nearby resorts with more snowmaking equipment.

TJX reports 7 percent increase in Jan. same-store sales

TJX Cos., the Framingham retailer that operates such chains as T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, said that sales at stores open at least year rose 7 percent in January from a year ago. Such sales, known as same-store sales, are considered a key measure of a retailer’s performance by Wall Street analysts. TJX now expects fourth quarter earnings per share to be at or slightly above the high end of its previously estimated range of $1.19 - $1.23.

Boston Scientific falls after 4Q profit plunges 55 percent

Boston Scientific Corp., the second-biggest cardiac-device maker, fell in early trading after fourth-quarter earnings plummeted 55 percent. Boston Scientific declined 3.6 percent to $5.87 at 8:30 a.m. Net income dropped to $107 million, or 7 cents a share, from $236 million, or 15 cents a share, a year earlier, the Natick-based company said. Demand for defibrillators to restart a stopped heart and pacemakers to ensure a steady rhythm, two of Boston Scientific’s biggest products, continued to fall in the fourth quarter.

Fidelity executive: Leaders need to ensure that younger Americans don’t get ‘raw deal’

Fidelity Investments’ asset management chief, Ronald O’Hanley, said that business and political leaders need to make sure they’re not creating “a truly raw deal” for younger generations of Americans. While the Occupy Wall Street movement could be criticized for a lack of focus, he is concerned about the notion of “intergenerational inequity” that the group raised. How younger Americans will pay their debts and save for retirement is an issue, he told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

Jumptap: It was a strong holiday for Kindle Fire

Jumptap, a Cambridge firm focused on mobile advertising, reported a big spike in its network traffic from tablet computers such as the Kindle Fire in the days after Christmas. According to Jumptap, that’s an indication that many consumers either received a tablet as a holiday gift or bought one for themselves. The market share of the Kindle Fire spiked sharply in December on the Jumptap network, Jumptap said, and that suggests a 2012 trend for lower-priced tablets.

NY Times Co. reports profit drop, agrees to sell more of its stake in the Red Sox

The New York Times Co. reported net income of $58.9 million for the fourth quarter, down 12.2 percent from a year ago, and said it has agreed to sell one-third of its remaining stake in the group that owns the Red Sox for $30 million. The Times Co., which owns The Boston Globe, said earnings per share in the quarter were 39 cents, compared with 44 cents a year ago. Total revenues declined 2.8 percent.

Casual Male revises guidance

Casual Male Retail Group Inc., a Canton-based chain of apparel stores for big and tall men, said it is revising its guidance after a sluggish economy and warm-winter weather slowed traffic to its stores. In a press release, the company said it expects earnings per share for fiscal 2011 to be $0.28 to $0.29 per diluted share compared with previous guidance of $0.35 to $0.38 per diluted share. The company plans to report its financial results on March 15.

Chara, Spikes surge in jock popularity

A California firm called Brand Affinity Technologies says it has developed a method for measuring how the popularity of athletes and celebrities rises and falls. The firm just issued a list of athletes who had the biggest jump in popularity during the last 30 days. Topping the list: Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins and Brandon Spikes of the New England Patriots. Others who saw a recent surge in popularity include Brandon Marshall, Hope Solo, Devin Thomas, and Danny Granger.

MIT Sloan course to tackle ‘Big Data’

Companies are now so overwhelmed by information overload that the MIT Sloan School of Management said it is gearing up to teach a two-day course that aims to help executives cope with massive data dumps and extract meaningful insights from real-time digital data. Set for March 27 and March 28, the course is titled, “Big Data: Making Complex Things Simpler.” According to MIT Sloan, companies adept at using “Big Data” are “around 5 percent more productive and profitable than their competitors.”

Super Bowl advertisers go after ‘second screens’

Call it the “second-screen” Super Bowl. About two-thirds of smartphone and tablet owners use their gadgets to do things like text or post on Twitter while watching TV, according to research firm Nielsen. So, for Sunday’s game, companies from Coke to Chevy are trying to reach fans on all the “second screens” they have. Chevrolet rolled out the first Super Bowl smartphone app that allows Big Game watchers to enter a contest to win everything from pizza to a new Camero.

Thermo Fisher Scientific posts strong 4Q, full-year results

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a maker of laboratory instruments with about 39,000 employees, said its adjusted earnings per share in the fourth quarter grew 23 percent to a record $1.18 as the Waltham-based company’s overall performance for the fourth quarter and for all of 2011 was helped by strong showings in China, India, and Brazil. Fourth-quarters revenues increased 15 percent to a record $3.13 billion. The company also reported strong numbers for all of 2011.

State officials say they want to find ways to better market local fish

Massachusetts officials are examining ways to better promote local seafood and combat perceptions that stocks are depleted. Those initiatives were discussed during the first full meeting today of the Seafood Marketing Commission, a group comprised of lawmakers, state officials, restaurant leaders, and commercial fishermen. “Part of what we’re doing here is playing defense against perceptions that we are abusing the ocean and will catch anything,” said state Senator Bruce Tarr, a Gloucester Republican.

Romney paid just 10.7 percent in 2010 taxes, Boston tax lawyer estimates

Depending on how you measure it, Mitt Romney’s tax rate may be even lower than it looked at first blush. Mitt Romney paid just 10.7 percent of his total gross income in federal income taxes in 2010 -- less than the 13.9 percent tax rate reported last week, according to a Boston tax lawyer who analyzed Romney’s returns.

Boston developer Arthur Winn fined $100,000 for making illegal campaign contributions

Developer Arthur Winn was fined $100,000, but avoided prison time at his sentencing today in US District Court for illegally funneling thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to politicians to help get support for his ultimately failed Columbus Center development. The sentence was far less severe than what prosecutors wanted: A $200,000 fine and six months in prison. US Magistrate Judith G. Dein said Winn’s illegal contributions were serious crimes, but didn’t warrant jail time because Winn only pleaded guilty to misdemeanors.

Home values in Boston area fell in November, according to Case-Shiller price index

Home values in the Boston area dropped 1.6 percent in November compared with October, according to new data released by the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices, an index that tracks national real estate data. It marks the third consecutive month of declining home values and brings the region’s home prices to about the level they were at in April 2003, according to the index, which is considered an especially accurate measure of the housing market.

Vermont Yankee nuke plant seeks OK to operate longer

The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant is asking the state Public Service Board for permission to continue operating beyond its original March 21 closure date. The move follows a Jan. 19 ruling by a federal court judge who found that the state didn’t have the authority to close the plant as it had wished. But the decision said the plant needed to seek a certificate of public good from the utility-regulating Public Service Board.

TJX promotes Goldenberg to CFO position

TJX Cos., which runs off-price stores like Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, and HomeGoods, is promoting Scott Goldenberg to chief financial officer. In his new role, Goldenberg will oversee TJX’s corporate finance operations.

Vertex’s Kalydeco drug approved for rare form of cystic fibrosis

In a big win for Cambridge-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the US Food and Drug Administration today approved the company’s drug Kalydeco (ivacaftor) to treat a rare form of cystic fibrosis. The drug is approved for patients ages 6 and over who carry the G551D gene mutation, and the news follows the approval last year of Vertex’s hepatitis C drug Incivek.

Home values in Boston area fell in November, according to Case-Shiller price index

Home values in the Boston area dropped 1.6 percent in November compared with the month before, according to new data released by the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices, an index that tracks national real estate data. It marks the third consecutive month of declining home values and brings the region’s home prices to about the level they were at in April 2003, according to the index, which is considered an especially accurate measure of the housing market.

Curis rises after approval on cancer drug shared with Roche

Curis Inc., a maker of medicines to restore human tissue, jumped as much as 6.1 percent in New York trading after U.S. regulators approved the skin-cancer drug it’s developing with Roche Holding AG. The company earned a $10 million milestone payment after yesterday’s approval of Erivedge, a treatment for basal cell carcinoma, and it’s also entitled to royalties from sales.

Biogen profit rises as sales increase

Drugmaker Biogen Idec Inc.’s fourth-quarter profit grew 25 percent on cost savings from job cuts and increasing sales of its multiple sclerosis treatments. Biogen said its profit rose to $300.2 million, or $1.22 per share, from $240.3 million, or 99 cents per share. The company said it earned $1.51 per share if one-time costs and gains are excluded. Revenue increased 9 percent, to $1.33 billion from $1.22 billion.

Andrew Zimmern, of “Bizarre Foods,” joins Babson College as an entrepreneur-in-residence

Babson College today said that Andrew Zimmern, host of the “Bizarre Foods” cable television show, has joined Babson as entrepreneur-in-residence. Zimmern, whose show on the Travel Channel has explored food cultures in more than 32 countries, will work with the Lewis Institute’s Social Innovation Lab at Babson as well as the Lab’s Food Sol, an ‘action tank’ focused on innovation in the food system.

Constant Contact releases “social campaign” service

After a private launch period, Constant Contact, Inc. has publicly released a new service: Social Campaigns. The new service enables users to customize their Facebook page, and to publish and manage marketing campaigns on Facebook that are designed to grow page “likes,” drive engagement, and inspire “social word of mouth.”

More than 140,000 people join campaign calling on Apple to protect workers

More than 140,000 people across the world have joined a campaign on Change.org calling on Apple to protect workers who assemble Apple products from abuse, injury, and death, the organization said in a release. Mark Shields, a self-identified Apple “super-user” launched the campaign on Change.org after listening to a radio program detailing allegations of labor abuses at an Apple supplier factory in China, including child labor, serious physical injuries of workers from repetitive motions during long shifts, and stress-related worker suicides.

Peoplefluent acquires Strategia Communications

Peoplefluent, a talent management firm with an office in Waltham, today said that it has acquired Strategia Communications, a Canadian-based learning management company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Peoplefluent’s software helps companies manage salaried, hourly and contingent labor.
