Vermont company uses coffee to brew energy
Wynntryst, LLC, an energy solutions company based in South Burlington, Vermont, is working with the Energy & Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota to develop a gasification power system that utilizes the waste from a coffee-processing plant to produce energy. The project specifically focuses on the waste from the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. plant, a Wynntryst client based in Waterbury, Vermont best known for its Keurig brand of individual coffee cups.

Dynasil Corporation of America reports fiscal year 2011 results
Dynasil Corporation of America, a developer of sensing, detection and analysis technology for homeland security, medical, and industrial applications, today reported financial results for fiscal year ended September 30, 2011. Revenue for fiscal 2011 increased to $47.0 million compared with $43.0 million in fiscal 2010.

Mansfield uses online service to sell surplus
The town of Mansfield, Mass. recently sold 75 surplus items for $160,000 using municibid, an online government auctions platform used by over 50 cities and towns in Massachusetts and 600 government agencies nationwide. Items sold included heavy equipment, vehicles, snow plows, a screening plant, bicycles, tools, and electric vehicles.

Workers at Berkshires resort get settlement
About 700 current and former workers at a Berkshires resort have received their share of a $7 million settlement with management. Checks for thousands of dollars arrived in the mail this week for food-service and spa employees of the Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in Lenox which was accused in a class-action lawsuit of withholding tips.

Boston Therapeutics gets first sales of Sugardown in Italy
Boston Therapeutics, Inc., a developer of diabetes therapeutics based in Manchester, NH, announced today that it has secured its first purchase order for distribution of the dietary supplement Sugardown in Italy. Sugardown is a complex carbohydrate-based chewable tablet to moderate post-meal blood glucose for those concerned about their blood glucose levels.

Mohegan discloses ‘going concern’ risk as it works to refinance
Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, the operator of Mohegan Sun casinos in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, said it has yet to reach an agreement to refinance $811 million in debt, raising the risk of being unable to continue operating. Mohegan said it received a default waiver from its bank lenders yesterday.

Blue Cross-Blue Shield seeks RI rate increase
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island is asking state officials to raise premiums for customers who purchase health coverage directly from the insurer. The office of the state health insurance commissioner announced the 4.4 percent rate increase request Thursday. It would cover plans covering individuals and families who are not eligible for health insurance with employers or government programs.

No Mass. store closings on Sears list
No Massachusetts stores are on a store closing list released today by Sears Holdings Co., which controls the Sears and KMart chains. However the list that was posted today represented just “79 of the 100 to 120 store closings” that the company said it was planning to close earlier this week. Forty one of the stores slated to close are Sears; 38 are KMarts. Sears said it would post additional closings “as they become available.”

A faithful Filene’s customer for 30 years, the counselor couldn’t resist finding some good bargains this morning at the store’s Boylston Street location. Loyal, nostalgic and sad shoppers were making final visits to area Filene’s Basement stores, which is closing for good tonight. The legendary retailer, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November, is holding liquidation sales.

Mass. AG Coakley releases report on charities
A Report on Professional Solicitations for Charity in 2010, released today by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office, reveals that in 2010, professional solicitors raised over $367 million in Massachusetts, which was almost $39 million more than in 2009. Of this amount nearly $166 million, or 45 percent of the amount raised, ended up with the charity. This means that on average, of every dollar that a professional solicitor raised for a charity in 2010, only 45 cents went to the charity.

Alexion to pay as much as $1.08 billion to buy Enobia Pharma
Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc., the maker of a drug for a rare blood disease, agreed to acquire closely held Enobia Pharma Corp. for as much as $1.08 billion, adding experimental treatments for genetic metabolic disorders. Last May, Enobia, which is based in Montreal, announced plans to open a US office in Cambridge.

Conn. hires group to study potential of ports
Connecticut is spending nearly $500,000 to develop a strategy to boost the economic potential of Connecticut’s ports. Officials announced it has hired Moffat & Nichol, a Long Beach, Calif.-based consulting group, to complete a study of the state’s ports in Bridgeport, New Haven and New London.

RI hospital workers union raps deadline for merger
A hospital workers union has criticized Rhode Island regulators for raising the possibility it will pull the plug on a proposal for a Boston-based hospital chain to merge with a financially troubled medical center in Woonsocket. A state judge in June approved plans for Steward Health Care Systems to acquire Landmark Medical Center and the two filed their application to the state in October. State health officials say the application is incomplete and gave Landmark and Steward until Jan. 11 to file a complete application.

Maine Air Force land sold to investor
A Portland-based real estate firm with ties to a Massachusetts construction company has paid $730,000 for nearly 1,500 acres of former Air Force land in Moscow that was once home to a radar system. A spokesman for the U.S. General Services Administration says the tract was purchased by Western Maine Realty. Western Maine Realty is owned by Jay Cashman, chairman of the board for the heavy construction company Jay Cashman Inc. of Quincy, Mass.

A123 battery defect causes electric car recall
Fisker Automotive Inc., which is beginning to sell plug-in electric sports cars, said it is recalling 239 Karma cars in the U.S. because of a battery defect supplier A123 Systems Inc. announced last week. Fisker, based in Anaheim, California, said in a notice posted today to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website that misplaced hose clamps in the batteries could cause coolant to leak and potentially cause fires.

Viacom may owe Harmonix investors $383 million
Media conglomerate Viacom Inc. may have to pay an additional $383 million to former shareholders of Cambridge-based Harmonix Music Systems, makers of the once-popular Rock Band videogame series.

Massachusetts Life Sciences Center awards $2.2 million to 3 companies
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, a quasi-public agency tasked with implementing the state’s ten-year, $1 billion Life Sciences Initiative, today announced the awarding of $2.2 million in loans to three early-stage life sciences companies: Intelligent Bio-Systems, Inc., Allurion Technologies, Inc., and Paragonix Technologies, Inc.

Massachusetts Convention Center Authority: 2012 best year since 2007
In another sign that Boston is shaking off the economic downturn, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority reported today that 2012 will be its best year since 2007, with booked conventions expected to generate more than 600,000 hotel room stays for the first time in five years. The banner convention year shows that not only are meeting planners holding more events as the economy improves, but also that the seven-year-old Boston Convention & Exhibition Center is coming into its own.

Boston 2012 convention bookings rise
Events held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center next year are expected to generate $625 million in economic impact and 601,000 hotel room nights, a 34 percent increase over the 446,596 room nights generated by events in 2011, according to the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority.

Bay State foreclosure deeds jump in November
The number of completed foreclosures in Massachusetts jumped more than 70 percent in November, indicating that lenders have improved their ability to process foreclosure paperwork after a slowdown over the past 12 months, according to The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. A total of 714 foreclosure deeds were recorded in November, a near 71 percent increase from 418 deeds in the same month last year.

Daniel Johnson to lead $69 million American Seafood Exchange Project
Daniel Johnson will serve as project director for the American Seafood Exchange, a $69 million project planned for Boston’s Seaport District, the company announced today. Johnson, who has overseen numerous large-scale industrial projects, will guide the seafood processing and distribution center from its current stage – planning and permitting – through its opening. He will lead the project team through all aspects of the development process, including market analysis, design and construction, and final tenant lease agreements.

Maine fishermen expect record prices for scallops
Maine scallop fishermen expect to get record prices for their catch this season with strong global demand and a diminished supply from Japan and other competing, scallop-producing nations. Sea scallops, which are similar to but bigger than bay scallops, have been harvested along the Maine coast since the late 1800s, and at times, it has been the state’s second most-valuable seafood, behind lobsters.

New York Times agrees to sell regional news group
The New York Times Co. will sell its 16 regional newspapers and related businesses to Halifax Media Holdings LLC for $143 million in cash, the company announced today.

Entergy shuts down Pilgrim nuclear reactor to repair valve leak
Entergy Corp. shut down the Pilgrim nuclear plant in Plymouth, Massachusetts to repair a leak associated with one of the four safety relief valves, a company spokesman said in an e-mail. The reactor was shut safely and the “minor leak” was captured inside the plant as designed, said Rob Williams, the spokesman.

Home prices fall

Home prices fall
Home prices in 19 of the top 20 cities in the nation, including Boston, fell in October compared to the month before, dragging down the Case-Shiller Home Price Index by 1.2 percent. In October 2011, Boston home prices were down -1.1 percent over September. The year-over-year change was the same: -1.1 percent. The previous month’s drop was not as great: just -0.8 percent.

Obama to nominate Harvard professor to Federal Reserve
The White House announced plans today to nominate two former US Treasury officials to serve on the Federal Reserve board, including Harvard University professor Jeremy Stein.

Belmont Rapid Infuser used in first liver transplantation in Iraq
The Belmont Rapid Infuser, manufactured in Billerica, was just used in the first ever liver transplant in Iraq. The trip was sponsored by The Red Crescent and Zheen International Hospital. Two young brothers were involved in the living-donor transplant surgery, which was successful, according to the company. The Rapid Infuser is manufactured by the Belmont Instrument Corporation.

Mass. gas prices up 3 cents per gallon
Massachusetts gas prices have risen for the first time in six weeks, but still remain lower than they were early this year. AAA Southern New England reports Tuesday the average cost of a gallon of self-serve, regular is up three cents to $3.24. The current price is a penny above the national average. A year ago at this time the Massachusetts average price was $3.03. AAA found self-serve, regular as low as $3.11 and as high as $3.49 per gallon.

MassMutual adds United Cerebral Palsy of New York City to list of retirement services clients
MassMutual’s Retirement Services Division has been selected by United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, Inc. as the new provider for the company’s 403(b), 401(k), and defined benefit retirement plans. The combined assets added $42 million to MassMutual’s platform. MassMutual Financial Group is a marketing name for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and its affiliated companies and sales representatives. MassMutual is headquartered in Springfield.

Nutrisystem builds on Affinnova platform
Affinnova, Inc., a Waltham marketing innovation software and services company, has been tapped by Nutrisystem to help introduce its next-generation program. Nutrisystem used Affinnova’s platform to collaboratively develop a vast range of potential marketing concepts, including names, key features, benefits and imagery. All told, there were over 73 million unique concepts to consider, test and evaluate in Nutrisystem’s “innovation space.”

Forma expands drug discovery team
Forma Therapeutics today announced three new additions to its research and development team, expanding its oncology drug discovery capabilities. Jaime Escobedo has been named Vice President, Biology; Mark J. Tebbe has been named Vice President, Medicinal and Computational Chemistry; and Dennis France has been named Executive Director and Head, Biomolecular Screening.

Pinpoint launches new laser alignment product
Pinpoint Laser Systems, based in Peabody, today announced a new, laser-based four-axis microgage system that the company says provides useful and accurate measuring information for evaluating and correcting machinery alignment problems. The new Laser Microgage 4D includes a receiver that will operate over distances of 100 feet and deliver measuring precision of 0.0005 inch and 0.002 degrees. It is designed to align lathes, turning centers, spindles, moving linear slides, and rams and pistons.

Staples Foundation awards $2.5 million
The Staples Foundation, a private foundation created by Framingham-based Staples, Inc., announced today it has awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to 112 non-profit organizations serving at-risk youth throughout the country. Staples Foundation selected these organizations for their commitment to providing youth with the skills and resources needed to become responsible and caring citizens.

A123 says batteries for Fisker may have potential safety issue
A123 Systems Inc., the maker of batteries for electric vehicles, said it found a “potential safety issue” in batteries it supplies to Fisker Automotive Inc. A123, which also sells batteries to automakers such as General Motors Co. and Daimler AG, said hose clamps that are part of the internal cooling system of its batteries supplied to Fisker were “misaligned” and may cause coolant to leak. Such a leak could lead to an electrical short circuit.

Former Merrill Lynch broker awarded $650k
One of the former Merrill Lynch & Co. brokers blamed for selling nearly $14 million in high-risk securities to the City of Springfield received a measure of exoneration earlier this week when an arbitration committee awarded him $650,000 in damages for his firing from the financial advisory firm after the city’s investments went bad.
